Is there anyway to get an Aspx page to return a html fragment rather than a full page?
I am using the Prototype Ajax framework to insert part of the contents of one page into a div tag on another. I have to do a few things like rebase the link and image tags in the source page so that they work from the new page.
I can't import the whole site into a VS 2005 web project and do it that way because that would break our Content management system. However, I can use .net to fix the links and images before Ajax gets the page. The bit I can't get my head around is how to just return the fragment I want rather than a whole page with <html> and <head> tags.
Any pointers or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Prototype is a different AJAX framework ?
I didn't use any framework at all when I used AJAX, but I would use response.write inside my ASPX to build my AJAX response, and I'd use response.End to stop anything else being written by the framework. I also made my pages aspx file completely empty.

Prototype is an open source framework. Seems to be quite popular.

When I remove the <html> and <head> tags from my aspx page VS 2005 complains, so I assumed that you couldn't do it. I will try and see what happens.

The main thing is, if you do the response.end, it won't get written, AFAIK

Am I right in thinking that the aspx file should contain just the following line?
<%@ Page Language="VB" AutoEventWireup="false" CodeFile="Test.aspx.vb" Inherits="Test" %>>
And the page.onLoad event has the response.write and response.end stuff?
When I try to build and publish an empty aspx file, VS complains that "Element html occurs too few times".
Ignore this. First couple of times VS did not want to build, but then it did. Maybe it just needed to have a think before it agreed that I am the programmer and it is the program!

Perhaps I am wrong and I had that element in there as well, but doing the response.write stuff in page load meant it didn't go to the client, I was sending JSON stuff, XML, all fine.

I am stuck with DataList. Let me explain you my problem. I have one dataset which suppose to bind with DataList (or any control which can cater my need). For example I have five column in my database
EmpID (int), EmpName (string), IsAdmin(Bool), IsFullTimeEMP(Bool), IsInIT(Bool)
Now I don’t know at design time how many column I want to display. I may display first three column or four or all five. First two columns suppose to be displayed in simple text format but any of last three should be displayed as a “check box”. If I add all item templates at design time, it works fine but the main problem is I don’t know how many columns I have to display, I can decide it at run time.
This is somehow urgent to me. Can anyone help? Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

The GridView control can be made to automatically generate it's columns from the contents of the data source. AutoGenerateColumns="true" or somethign like that

Create an GridVew say it's ID (grdEmployee) with 5 columns at design time and make the last three ItemTemplates visible false. and set AutoGenerateColumns property to false only.
And In Page_Load event based on ur req. display ur columns by using following syntax:
if u need to display 3rd ItemTemplate use the following code snippet:
grdEmployee.columns(2).Visible = true
if u need to display 4th ItemTemplate use the following code snippet:
grdEmployee.columns(3).Visible = true
if u need to display 5th ItemTemplate use the following code snippet:
grdEmployee.columns(4).Visible = true

if we have three tables in our database in the applicaion n through our web page we want to update the information in the databse how we can do it. secondly design a login page that takes username and password from a login table in the database that has both username and password stored in it(without encrypted for easy purpose) without using inbuilt login controls(only text boxes with password mode)..

Have you tried searching? Point #1 is such basic concept you can find it just about any ASP.NET book and a few thousand articles. Point# 2 is also very easy, there are plenty of examples. Start with Forms Authentication.

how to make a window apll in which user enters the data in textbox only in teh format <name>=<value> pair all other formats are ignored. then he clicks the add button to add the text in the listbox. then he can sort the list box ascending or descending and can delete the selected <name>=<value> pair from the listbox using delete button.

Most frustrating. The format of the website cannot be changed:
I have 5 web pages each with a form. These page forms have content the user can edit & redit.On the top of each page is a menu bar affording the user to toggle back and forth to any of the 5 pages viewing the respective content. Now say the user toggles to page 2, makes changes to the content, via a RadEditor, toggles to page 5, then retoggles to page 2 to see the changes he just made.
Here's the delema: During these edits/redits, the revised content CANNOT be posted as an update to the database. Only AFTER the user is satisfied with all the edits made, does he click button 6 for "Update All My Changes".
So in short, how can I have several editable web pages of form elements that allow the user to see the changes they made, even after clicking off and then back to that form without using a database update or items mentioned above. Remember, They will not let me hit the database until aff the edits on the 5 web page forms are complete. Thanks.
Update:
I have reevaluated the entire process.
I've decided to utilize the file stream object and have them edit their entire page.
Now, I have to figure out how to reiterate thru these modified forms to place the data into the db.

When you change page in the menu, do you actually have to load a new page, or can't you just hide one div and show another? That way you could have all the editable data on a single page, and there is no problem in keeping the data until it should be saved.
Despite everything, the person most likely to be fooling you next is yourself.

As I explained, I must change the page. I cannot have the elements all on one page.
