Thanks for all the assistance. As far as compiling goes, changing the function declaration to "int Card::charsToIndex(char rank, char suit)" makes it compile and run fine.
Thanks for the advice on how to make the code better C++ as well. Having come from a Java backgroud, I'm sure it's going to take me a while to get used to all the nuances of the language

the main idea here is: after saving the file with any data it contains....
when i double click it ...it should open ..first by checking the path of the file then open that file.
ok..my question is ...in "OnCreate()" . exactly in f.open()...if i specified the path like "abc.ccc" it works
but when i put open(path)it wont.
although i checked the path value by amessage box and it showed me that i had the correct path ...this is driving me crazy....
so pleease i would be thankful for any kind of help

what you are doing in vbGetCommandLine() you are trying to form a single string while the command line is already managed to separate the parameters to separate buffers (argument vectors __argv) and you are trying to bound with quotes if a single parameter has space, do you know if the parameter has space it is split into individual __argv element. These should be taken care when executing the application.

if you want to get the file path, just take the first argument, better is to parse the parameters for flags,
Since you are using MFC, you can use CWinApp::ParseCommandLine, in the application InitInstance do the following,

it works ..but when i put

but there is something.... the file i saved earlier opens fine...but
i cant run the program now it shows me a debug assertion failed..

debug assertion will direct you to find what is the failure and where it happens.
what prevents you to code in onInitDialog, it is the override for doing dialog initialization, OnCreate is called before creating the child controls if i remember correctly.

well,i tried to code in onInitDialog() but then the saved files open but empty . where in onCreate() it opens and retrieve the saved data.
ps:both ways lead to debug assertion when running the program.
it confusing me..

but you can trace the call stack to find the origin of failure in your code, and when debugging at assertion the exact position of code not yours may be filecore.cpp you get the hint.

i debg the application and find the debug assertion failed in this line:

It seems file is not opened properly, you need to check the return value of CFile::Open and the get the error status by passing CFileException parameter and you can get the error string using CFileException::GetErrorMessage. the usage is given in [CFile::Open^].
if a function returns other than void you should properly check the return value other wise what is the need of return value, by the way check whether path is correct.

Using Visual C++ 6.0 MFC in SDI.
I'm basically a C programmer doing C++ with MFC. I'm trying to understand what "Serialization" does for me in terms of file I/O. I would like to use the MFC SDI file menu items, but simply code my file input/output in basically the oldstyle - just opening and closing files and storing and retrieving the variable info that is necessary for my program. Is it simple to mix the oldstyle file I/O with the SDI file menu handling items or do I need to learn about serialization?

If you need to store and retrieve objects, serialization is better.
IMHO exploiting MFC's serialization is also amusing.

also, one has to be very careful with serialzed filed if moved from one system to another, because some types can be written/read differently depending on the system...

You might want to give object serialization a try just to see how it works. It might surprise you.

Certainly. Instead of using your document's Serialize() method, you would instead write to and read from your file(s) in methods like OnSaveDocument(), OnOpenDocument().

Hello,
For one of my company's projects I'm using CHttpConnection and CHttpFile to download HTML files from different web sites. I then extract some data as well as certain links from these files.
The problem is that sometimes the HTML files contain character codes for certain characters instead of the actual character (%3F instead of ? for example), which is problematic when extracting the data. What's strange is that sometimes the *same* HTML file will contain character codes, and sometimes it will contain the actual character, which is even more problematic.
I would like the downloaded HTML files to be in a normal "readable" format. Do I have to parse the files and convert the characters myself?
Maybe I'm just missing something unfortunately I'm don't know much about the details of HTTP.
Here are my relevant HTTP headers in case this is the source of the problem:
Accept: image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, */*
Accept-Language: fr

Please let me know how big or max int can a thread's ID be. i.e. how many digits a thread ID can be.
Also kindly tell me how many, at the max, threads can run at the same time. Max number of threads running at the same time, what is it.

Since thread API require a DWORD, you may expect up to 10 digits (in base 10 notation).
The above is a conservative approach since allowed ID range maybe smaller but I can't find any documented constraint on it.

Microsoft do not document the range of the thread ID. On desktop Windows it is currently a handle into the kernel handle table and is therefore typically a number between 4 and a few thousand, but this is not true on Windows CE. You should allow for any value between 0 and 4,294,967,295.

The number of threads that can be created is limited only by the amount of memory in the system. For any given process this is approximately the amount of virtual address space divided by the stack reservation size (normally 1MB, so 1500 is typically the maximum on a 32-bit system). The number of threads that can actually be running on CPU cores concurrently is the number of CPU cores. The number of threads in the runnable state (not blocked, waiting for a CPU) is also effectively unlimited, limited only by the amount of memory in the system.
It takes a finite amount of time to switch between one thread and another, and because of round-robin scheduling, if there are a lot of threads to run, it can take a long time between two time slices for a given thread. (When a thread's time slice expires, it goes on the end of the queue of threads to run.) In many cases the context-switch overhead tends to dominate the overall runtime, causing throughput to be lower than if you queued requests to run on a smaller pool of threads.
Windows has a handy concept called an I/O Completion Port which, once a thread is associated with it, will track when that thread blocks due to some other wait (for I/O, comms, sleep, whatever, as long as it's ultimately waiting on an OS object) and if there's a thread waiting for work, work is queued, and there are fewer than a threshold of threads already running, the thread that most recently started waiting for work is released. This generally keeps the number of runnable threads down. Scalable servers on Windows generally use I/O Completion Ports (SQL Server uses its own scheduler with asynchronous I/O so only has one thread per CPU core.)

I have a list control which is declared like this

I set the background color to black, and the text color to white. Whenever I select a row, I just want to draw a rectangular wrap to the row. So I implement the item change method, like this:

When I select a row, it works. Then I select another row, it works but do not erase the previous rectangular. So my list control is full of rectangular.

When you select an item in a list control, OnLvnItemchangedList1() gets called multiple times. Once for the previous item, and again for the current item. Change the pen color accordingly.
