Debugging a shell extension is different then debugging other applications. For shell extensions you have to debug explorer.exe since it loads the shell extension. You cannot debug explorer.exe at the source level since it is part of OS and its source code is not available.
To get debugging symbols use symbol server to get the symbols for system binaries. You can read more about symbol server at here[^].
To configure symbol server in VS 2008 follow these steps:
1. Tools->Options->Debugging->Symbols
2. Under symbol files(.pdb) locations add an entry containing http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols.
3. In cache symbols from ... give a path to save the symbols locally.
Also you will find lots of information if you google "debugging shell extensions".

Using the debugger, you should be able to see what DLL is mapped into the address space shown in the exception and/or call stack.
Use a tool like DUMPBIN dump the exports from that DLL and you will be able to find out what exported function is causing the problem.
Note sure that will help you much, though...
Peace!

CComboBox::GetLBText
int GetLBText( int nIndex, LPTSTR lpszText ) const;
void GetLBText( int nIndex, CString& rString ) const;
Gets a string from the list box of a combo box. The second form of this member function fills a CString object with the item’s text.

Hi,
I want to learn DX10 and C++, I know C#, Java etc.
So I also know VS2008 EXPRESS as IDE for C#. But is it as good for C++ as well?
I'd like to know what you think, which IDE is best for developing with C++ and why?
Thx

as I already said some days ago, real programmers use vi . but it's up to you to use Visual Studio if you feel better with it
personnaly, I only code C++/MFC, and yes, i code within VS.

Your kidding right? The editor is VC (Visual C++); an earlier version was Visual C/C++, also call VC. Before that there was the C only environment. The other languages, like C#, where added over time.
So the answer is yes.
error1408 wrote: which IDE is best for developing with C++ and why?
I always end up, eventually, using VC for C/C++. It's what I know best. If you are just learning C++ then you should stick to the IDE you are already use to, because in will reduce the learning curve.
Here are some C++ sites:

Good Luck!

If you want to use of Directx I suggest use of VC++(on the vista is better ).

Well I haven't used direct x 10 but if its anything like SWING was, then I'd seriously suggest vi (ok, how about gvim) for at least the first rudimentary project. It's not an IDE, you have to use g++ in conjunction w/ it.
I've also heard good things about BBEdit
by the way, how's c# different / what's it good at?
|
|
|
|
|
Ok and why do you think I should use vi, gvim, or BBEdit? What are the special features? Do they provide code completion or sth. like the Intelli-Sense in VS?

Creating device drivers is not a trivial task. I suggest consulting one of the experts.

David is correct in saying that developing a device driver is not a trivial task. If you have to ask such a question then you are -- at this stage -- almost certainly not the man for the job.

Hi
I have downloaded Ultimate Toolbox( http://www.codeproject.com/KB/MFC/UltimateToolbox.aspx[^] source code. And i see that for drawing controls, some of controls source code overrode OnDrawItem and put drawing code in there, some of them in OnPaint message handler, some of them both.
How does a control developer make decision when only Onpaint or only Drawitem or both of them must be used? Is this relative to control(for example drawing a custom buton is different combobox or etc.) or relative to drawing style?
Could you please give me some trick?
Thanks...
