How is the File Opened? If you are looking for bytes it should be "rb", "r+b" etc, the 'b' must be there. What was ascii 26 again? I think it was 'Substitute' Anyway, fgets and fputs may try to put an interpretation to ascii 26 when encountered in text mode. In binary mode is should pass straight trough.

Does anyone know how to get the vendor id, product id and serial number of a USB device from Windows?
I know that you can get the vendor name and product name using IOCTL_STORAGE_QUERY_PROPERY, but this returns a text description of the vendor and product rather than the hex ID codes.
I have also found that the registry enumerates the USB devices in HKLM\CurrentControlSet\services\USBSTOR\enum, but I don't know how to tie this into the device handle I have on an opened device handle.

This code that you suggested is very specific to IDE, issuing ATA commands via a custom driver. What I require are the USB identifiers as transmitted over the USB during enumeration of the device. These IDs identify the specific device. They are held as entries in the registry. What I was hoping for was a system call or technique that would associate a handle of an opened device to the registry entry that specified the Vendor, Product and serial numbers.

I Understand what you mean. I am not aware of any system calls in that respect. System calls tend to be generic as far as the filing system is concerned. I guess that this sort of communication takes place at device driver level. This suggests that to get this info, you'll need to write a driver, and insert it into the driverchain. All very technical and Error Prone. Seeing that you know that this info is stored in the registry, any chance of using that information.

Your executable is still running while you are compiling, so the file can't be updated. Close it and build again to fix the problem.

I think that happens all of us from time to time. Can be strange for a novice though, particularly if through one foulup on another, the running exe is invisible on the task bar or the Task Manager.

I am using:
RegisterHotKey(This->hwndOuter, ID_HOTKEY_COPY, MOD_CONTROL, value_of_INSERT); // hotkeys
to registry the CTRL-INSERT hotkey for copy text.
I want to know the value_of_INSERT from the code above.
I also want to use CTRL-PgUp, CTRL-PgDown, CTRL-End, CTRL-Home as hotkeys.
How can I now these values?

But why do you want to register system-wide hotkeys?

Thank you. That helped me much
I am working at a IE plug-in and I had to use CTR-R, CTRL-H as hotkeys for the plug-in. These were also hotkeys for the browser.
So I used RegisterHotKey and UnregisterHotKey.
Is there another way that I can override or disable the browser's hotkeys while the plugin is used?

Hi,
I am establishing a connection with the postgres database when my application comes up. And closing the connection during the exit of my application.
But some times during the exit, application hangs in the "database.close()" statement. i.e. Execution is not moving to the next line. even for 2 days it stays there in the same close statement.
Any help would be appreciated.

First of all, let me salute your patience. 2 days? Not bad.
You don't need an explicit close() since it's taken care of in the destructor if it's still open. (Of course, you need to delete the CDatabase object if it's allocated in the heap.)
Try without, and see what happens. You should be able to call close() multiple times, so there is probably something fishy in you code (or ODBC driver).

I am using c language.
I have a thread 'A', it does some downloading thing, and may take several minutes to complete.
So, I need another thread 'B' which will monitor thread 'A', and will kill it, if 'A' takes more than a fixed period of time, say 1 min or so.
Kindly help me in this by giving some clue or code sample.
