Well, what is the reason for encrypting? First you can only encrypt query string.
What I have done is, instead of encrypting, I would hold all I need in session variable and persist that into a database, and then pass in my query string something like
www.codeproject.com?sid=GUID
The beauty of this is, one there is no encryption needed, second the user can not guess or generate random GUID and third the implementation can easily be changed with no change with the interface.
think about it.

Hi,
Actually i was thinking about that. but this is my second level of searching details.
firstly i have more than 50,000 records and all are unique.
In first query i get some details from user and display then into datagrid, they may be 1,2 or more than 5.
after adding hypeylink button in last column i have display complete details of that row item in another page.
that was bit complecated for me. so i have chosen this.
but thanks buddy.
I am now using with encrypting querystring.

If I have a VB.NET class (utilitised by an ASP.NET based website) which has shared variables, properties etc, what is the scope of the variables?
What I mean, is the value of the variable retained and visible only within the user session or over the application has a whole?
Is my question clear?
Thanks

I think a session is shared throughout the app in the same browser

I'm not deep in Visual Basic but as much I can imagine, maximum scope will be only within that class..

FYI: If I was writing a VB.NET Windows Forms project and had a class containing Shared variables for example
Public Class Common
Public Shared myNumber As Int32
End Class
I could set the value in one class as follows
Public Class PartOne
Public Sub New()
Common.myNumber = 100
End Sub
End Class
and later retrieve the value in another class as follows
Public Class PartTwo
Public Sub New()
Messagebox.Show(Common.myNumber)
End Sub
End Class
A messagebox will be displayed showing the value of 100
The scope of the shared value is the session on the PC

NO. It will be shared to all threads in the current application domain. When application domain unloads, it's value will be lost.

shared in VB is static in C#, right ? It will have a lifetime till the application domain recycles. Which means multiple users will have the same value.

Yes that is correct; I could think of the C# equivlent.

Hi
I am using Microsoft Index Searching to search my website.
The problem is that when someone searches for a phrase which is say 3 words long it looks for the 3 individual words rather then the phrase.
How do I search for a phrase?
thanks

|
|

Try enclosing the search phrase into quotation marks e.g.
If the user enters This is my search then you will need to reformat the string to "This is my search"

We are exporting some data to excel and we have installed Excel 2007 in our Development/Staging/Production(Web Farm) environments. All the environments are running in Win 2003 Server,IIS 6. We are receiving the following error while initializing excel object in production.
Application:
System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046} failed due to the following error: 80070005.at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(RuntimeType objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingServices.AllocateUninitializedObject(Type objectType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.CreateInstance(Type serverType) at System.Runtime.Remoting.Activation.ActivationServices.IsCurrentContextOK(Type serverType, Object[] props, Boolean bNewObj)
Event Log:
The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{00024500-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.
We have given the permissions for Network Service in DCOMCNFG for Excel Application. The error is coming only in production and not in any other environments.
I searched for solutions and all are pointing to giving Activation Permissions to Network Service(The application pool is running under this identity only) which has been done.
I could not figure out any other reasons that may be causing this problem.
Please help

Hello,
Does anybody have a preference of using htmlcontrols over webcontrols? If I don't need all the props of asp:textbox , should I use the html control equivalent? Are there differences in performance?
(Idem the difference between for example select runat="server" and asp:dropdownlist )
Would like to hear your thoughts.

I tend to use asp.net controls because in the future if I need to make adjustments to them and add features its easier to leave as asp.net controls.
To be honest I think the asp.net controls were created to go with the back end code.
If you arent using back end code with them, then it might as well use html controls

Performancw wise Input with Ruat=server is better. Because asp:textbox webcontrol is converted into input control from server(when it is rendered by browser). This is an extra step done by server if you use asp:textbox.
But associating data(we say its databinding) with asp:textbox is much more easier than input type with runat=server for a developer. Apart from that Asp:textbox is having more properties and methods exposed to developer which makes it more useful( makes job is easier for developer ) to developer.
Thanks,

I don't think you will see a huge difference as both needs to processed to render HTML input. ASP.NET engine is quick enough to do this.
Arindam Tewary wrote: asp:textbox webcontrol is converted into input control from server(when it is rendered by browser)
ASP.NET just converts the asp:textbox to equivalent HTML input control and emits the HTML to response and it is rendered by browser. Browser is not the one who is converting from asp:textbox HTML input.
Arindam Tewary wrote: This is an extra step done by server if you use asp:textbox.
This step is happening for input element with runat=server attribute.

In HTML server control, actually the code written is copied back to browser.
But if you have asp web server server control, AS.NET engine emits equivalent HTML output therfore a CONVERSION happens. Yah I agree system quick enough, still you cant ignore the basic difference of HTML and asp web server controls.
It was never told that browser does that conversion. It was wriiten that server does that job.
Anywaz good post by you. I must appreciate.

Not exactly. It also will go through all the phases like loading/saving viewstate etc.

I know, but something written in the brackets was giving confusion.
