If you want to avoid popup then you can use overlay functionality, in which one div will on the top of the page which will have all that stuff which your poup will contain.
About caching, its depend what the data that page has, if its static then we can cache the output.

i am tring to search for log files on c:\ using a date range (format 20080725) the file format is lookup20080725.log the other log is detail20080725.log. the logs are created daily and i want to pull
up all files using a start date and a end date. then to display then on a web page with hyper links.
these files are on the server not a pc if that helps.
i am not sure if using a do loop or the for next is better
Dim str As String
Dim en As String
Dim i As Integer
Dim filext As String
str = date1.Text
en = date2.Text
Do Until i = en
filext = File.Exists("C:\lookup" & i & ".log")
i = str + 1
If filext = True Then
End If
Loop
thanks for any help or advice or even a point in the right direction lol

Create an object of stringbuffer class, and use any loop to move accross.
if its exist then add hyper link tag that is <a> and provide the path, else just name of file, no hyper link
somethign ike...
if file exists then
Sb.appendline("<a href="[filepath]" target="_blank">[FileName]</a>")
else
Sb.appendline("[FileName]")

A year ago I created Windows custom control in VB.NET 2.0, which serves as document manager for any Case Management Application, including Customer Billing, Check Writer, etc... It works fine and quite easy to use.
But recently I had to implement same functionality for Web application and control fails to show.
No errors and no results. The control itself use external dll's and classes, including WebBrowser control and mshtml.dll.
If anyone knows how to handle it, any help would be greatly appreciated.
I can send objects and a sample of using it.

Hi friends
First of all I would like to thank people here on codeproject for helping me whenever I need help. I am hopefull that now also all of you will help me. Today I got a special scenario which I am applying in my application.
I have 2 text boxes to enter zipcode, In first text box when ever user enters some data and presses tab and on getting focus on the second textbox, the second textbox must show data based on the values entered in the first textbox like what we see in google suggest.
For example when user enters 5 digit zipcode in 1st textbox & presses tab key the focus will be on 2nd textbox and immediately 2nd textbox must show names of peoples based on the zipcode entered in 1st textbox, like how we see in google suggest.
For further clarification please mail me back. Hope some one will help me. Thanks in advance
Thanks

wish i coulda gotten that in college..i may have become a computer engineer, though without actually doing any of the work i dont think i would have been one for long. i guess people just think we sit in small fabric covered box all day and get a paycheck and dont actually have to do or know anything. i know thats the opinion around here most of the time (until we put a build out then we do things but what we do is never right)

I have a simple ASP webservice that performs a SELECT query against a database, and then an INSERT statement on the same database/table. The problem arises at the time when we create the second OleDB connection object and attempt to Open() it. The connection string is exactly the same for both connection objects. Another intersting thing is that this code works fine when it is used in a Windows Form project. I'm using VS2003.
Here's the code used for both attempts:
try
{
cnOleDBSDE = new OleDbConnection();
cnOleDBSDE.ConnectionString = "Data Provider=" +DBProvider+ ";"+
"Provider=" + DBShapeProvider + ";" +
"Data Source=" + DBName + ";" +
"Pooling=" + Pooling.ToString() + ";" +
"User Id=" + UserId + ";" +
"Password=" + Password;
cnOleDBSDE.Open();
}
Here's the connection object data from the immediate window when .Open() is called succesfully:
cnOleDBSDE
{System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection}
base {System.Data.Common.DbConnection}: {System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection}
ConnectionString: "Data Provider=MSDAORA.1;Provider=MSDataShape;Data Source=sdeprod;Pooling=False;User Id=ACOUSINS;Password=djhf6li"
ConnectionTimeout: 15
Database: ""
DataSource: "sdeprod"
Provider: "MSDataShape"
ServerVersion: 'cnOleDBSDE.ServerVersion' threw an exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException'
State: Closed
And the connection object data from the immediate window when .Open() throws an OleDB exception:
cnOleDBSDE
{System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection}
base {System.Data.Common.DbConnection}: {System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection}
ConnectionString: "Data Provider=MSDAORA.1;Provider=MSDataShape;Data Source=sdeprod;Pooling=False;User Id=ACOUSINS;Password=djhf6li"
ConnectionTimeout: 15
Database: ""
DataSource: "sdeprod"
Provider: "MSDataShape"
ServerVersion: 'cnOleDBSDE.ServerVersion' threw an exception of type 'System.InvalidOperationException'
State: Closed
I don't see any differences. Finally here's the error:
{"Data provider could not be initialized."}
[System.Data.OleDb.OleDbException]: {"Data provider could not be initialized."}
Data: {System.Collections.ListDictionaryInternal}
HelpLink: null
InnerException: null

I'm guessing that you have the Oracle client installed correctly on your desktop (which would explain why your code is working in a Windows Forms application) but not installed correctly on your web server. Check and make sure you can connect to your database directly from the web server (for example, use SQLPlus or something like that directly from the web server console). If you can't, then you'll have to review your Oracle client installation there.
|
|
|
|
|
The thing is, I can connect just fine the first pass. I'm using the Visual Studio development server that starts automatically on my machine when I go into debug so I assume it uses the same credentials as my local user logon info.

I'm not sure if this is possible, but what i want to create is web application that sends notifications to the user via whatever communication medium upon a certain condition.
For example, lets say we have an online form. You don't complete the form, but you can save your current input and come back to finish it later. Now lets say you forget to complete the form. The application will send you an alert or notification after a week or so to remind you to complete the form.
Assuming that I'm using asp.net 3.5 and sql server 2005, how can i have the application on the server send alerts to the user after a time period has passed ?
|
|
|
|
|
store th edata in a db and have a seperate process that watches the db and send the notifications, or check the storage medium for old incomplete information every time its run and notifies the people..however this could be slow for the new person trying to use it and having to wait while the server notifies all of the people with incomplete signups.
if i gave up on completeing a form it was probably for a good reason and i wont care about finishing it.

I'm thinking something like a Windows service application that polls your sql server 2005 database for records requiring notifications, and uses System.Net.Mail objects to send emails would work for you.
|
|
|
|
|
the service polling sounds like a good move. it did cross my mind before
I was just wondering if there was a way to do it using just sql server and asp.net
Maybe i can look into notification services

I have a vb.net application that is installed on a machine acting as a webserver. I need to open this application from an asp.net website. I have been told that I should use an ActiveX control. I have read some articles but i'm still not sure how to use active x controls. I am new to programming so I don't understand most of the terms used. Can someone please explain it to me. Thank you in advance

ActiveX controls are an old school way running code a client.
What does this application do and where do you want it to run?
I didn't get any requirements for the signature
|
|
|
|
|
I want a user to click on a button and the application should run. The application is a tool that the user will use while adding input to the webpage.
|
|
|
|
|
Well, usually it is difficult to call a windows application from a browser. The reason for this is because of security. Generally you don't want web applications to run code on the client machine.
Is this application for the internet or on a local network?
If you are running the application in an intranet environment you can deploy the windows application using Click Once Deployment[^] and then simply put a link to the web page of the application on your web page.
Passing arguments to the application is another issue all together...
I didn't get any requirements for the signature

Its running on a local network. Thanks for your response. I will take a look at the article.
