I am writing a Windows application using VS2005 C# .NET 2.0 and I need to get a list of file names from a web site sub folder (in order to check if there is an updated database file to download). Can anyone give me a SIMPLE method as I have no experience of any web related programming. It would be useful if I could provide a search pattern such as "Databasexxxx.mdb". Many thanks to anyone who can help.

where is your application going to run? are you trying to access web sites virtual folder from a remote location? do you have an access privilege to the machine/directory?
I am not sure what you trying to do, but you can not access virtual directory from remote machine with out proper credentials to the machine.
another way is to list/export all the files from the web application it self
see here and here and here

My application will run on desktop and laptop machines world wide. My client wants the app. to check their web site to see if there is an later version of a database and if so download it. I don't really understand "credentials". Will my client have to have some extra software on their web site?. I found the WebClient.DownloadFile method, and that looks really simple. Am I missing something?

Yes. You can only get a file listing locally, so you need something that the application can call, e.g. a web service, that will look up the name of the file and return it to the application.
Despite everything, the person most likely to be fooling you next is yourself.

In this case it is easy then. You don't need any credentials nor do you want to list the files on the website. You will need someway of figuring out what is the current version of the database in the web site. Say you could use a webservice to accomplish this. Then you need a known set of interval to check for the version. This could be done at the start of the application or after a known time period, may be every 24 hours if the application runs continuously. Finally you download the database to the local machine and do your magic installing/updating into the local db.
WebClient.DownloadFile should do the trick to download the database, here this should help.

Not going to be really easy for you to do without having proper credentials.

Are you still on with this? Look - why don't you save yourself time and buy this[^] product. You obviously aren't going to get the answer that you want because we aren't going to write your code for you - so you might as well buy a copy from somebody who's already done the work.

Geeze, and I've given this person solutions in the past. How dense can they be?

You have been advised to give Office Interop Library a look over the past two months. Have you even done that?

Your master? Are you a Genie? Are you perhaps chained up in a cellar with only the connection to Code Project available to you?
Seriously - you've wasted so much time on this, that it would have been cheaper for you to buy in a solution. You aren't going to be given code for free, so you are either going to have to bite the bullet and buy the code in, or you will have to code it for yourself.

I'd bet dollars to donuts that this is actually true.

No offense, but your master ( boss, I assume ) is an idiot. But you have been at this for some time and PIA (aka Office Interop Library) is best way to get the job done.

I am wondering if we can paste an image while a webbrowser control is set on a designMode='On'. like copy image from word and paste directly on webbrower. I know we can insert an image through execommand(Paste,false,false). The problem is that when i paste an image directly, i don't see an image it just shows an empty box on the browser. I Couldn't find much on this topic.
Any input is highly appreciated.

I read excel file using following code. This code properly work when columnName variable is not numeric value. If columnName varibale is numeric for example columnName = "1"; so I get IndexOutOfRangeException. Under the while loop, in this line myList.Add(dr[columnName].ToString());
//columnName is string parameter
string connectionString = "....."
List<string> myList = new List<string>();
DbProviderFactory factory = DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("System.Data.OleDb");
using (DbConnection connection = factory.CreateConnection())
{
connection.ConnectionString = connectionString;
using (DbCommand command = connection.CreateCommand())
{
string sql = "SELECT " + columnName + " FROM [Test$]";
command.CommandText = sql;
connection.Open();
using (DbDataReader dr = command.ExecuteReader())
{
while (dr.Read())
{
myList.Add(dr[columnName].ToString());
}
dr.Close();
}
}
}
What can I do.
Best Regards...
