Hi, I'm trying to truncate and add ellipsis to text that's too long to fit in a specific width (in pixels), actually I'm already done with this part but the question is, are you aware of any differences in the way web browsers render text? Are there differences when rendering text in browsers on different platforms, e.g. Windows, Mac, Linux .. etc? I made some tests using IE6 and FF2 running on Windows XP and there was no difference at all, the text width was exactly the same in both browsers (using Verdana 12px).
I know about the CSS solution but I'm not willing to use it as it only works with IE, I also came across a javascript solution but I don't want to use it too (it makes some sense to save some bandwidth, why send something to the user that won't be displayed? this applies to the CSS solution too). Also, I'm not worried about users resizing the text, I'm only interested in getting this working with the *initial* font size.
I'm not completely sure but I don't think there are differences between browsers working on Windows, so I'm a little worried about the other platforms more esp. Mac, if you're using Mac then I would really appreciate if you measure this text for me (in Verdana 12px):
"this text is only meant for testing text rendering in different browsers" (without the quotes)
Thanks for your help ...

There's no guarantee that a given browser will render text to a specific pixel width. If i load up your site on my phone, or using a text-only browser, or with CSS turned off, or on a system without the font you specified... then things will look different to some extent. YMMV - add all the fluff you want, but make sure there's a fallback for critical information.

Hi, thanks for your answer, actually I'm not really worried about getting this working with every single browser, I'm only concerned about getting it working in the majority of browsers, besides if things go wrong and the browser doesn't render the text the way I intend it to be, it won't be a problem, all what will happen is that the text could possibly get *wrapped*, not a big deal! it's only a cosmetic thing ...
By the way, many major websites do this on the server side (truncate long text and add ellipsis), you may check yahoo answers for an example (they truncate the nicknames if they are too long) ...

No worries, then.

In my Index page, i have created 3 frames.
1. Top for banner
2. left for navigation
3. right for opening the page in this frame.
i want to fix my web page which is going to open in frame 3.
I want vscroll but not hscroll.

|
|

|
Firstly, I suggest that you don't use frames for the simple reason: they're very outdated, and were a bad concept from the start. If you want to load content in a frame-like manner, I'd advise loading the data into the page dynamically using some form of server-client interaction (JavaScript and PHP for example).
However, if you do want to go the frames route, then you can set the frame scrolling property to auto ; then scrollbars will be used when there is vertical overflow. If you don't want horizontal scrollbars then just make sure your framed page doesn't have horizontal overflow (put it in a <table> with a width of 95%, for example).

i thing you should use table or div tags for your problem and you can show your values in iframe using vscroll.
I will do my best?

Just created some Web Slices for a Site getting ready for IE8. Using IE8 Beta 2 and a Vista Bus 32 SP1 client. All is well except cannot get the Page favicon to appear in the Favorites Bar link created by subscription. If I use the properties sheet later I can change it. So I assume it is supported. Other slices I have tried seem to work OK. Is there a property that I am missing?
Another quirk is that the Address Bar and Tab ICONs are reset to default when the slice link is added. A refresh sets them back.
Any ideas would be appreciated. No Winders Flames please.

To perspx: Thanks for your thought. IE8 is the Browser they will be deploying and Web Slices is one feature they want to leverage. All else seems OK except the ICON. I realize the idea of page subscriptions can be done in a lot of other ways and maybe better with other browsers.
Thanks.

Yeah I realised that there kinda weren't any other "stable" versions of IE8 until they bring it out of beta

When you enable script debugging in IE you're prone to the modal script error dialog from hell which can get stuck on some bug and infinite loop. You can't browse to another page, you can't tell it to go away, you've essentially become it's slave.
Is there a way to close this annoying dialog without having to go to task manager and kill the entire process?

Use a better script debugger? I'm sure Shog would swear by FireBug, and I've also found Opera's developer tools to be very handy, which should solve your problem, unless it's an IE-only script error.

Sometimes you can click really really fast on some other part of the UI (such as the Home or Refresh buttons) and force the script to unload. Good luck... i usually end up just killing the process.

Hi, I wonder if you can help me, I am working with an SQL Server 2005 database with web front end. Which consist of ASP pages, JavaScript. I have a Conn. asp file already set up so that all the relevant pages can connect to the database. My problem isn’t the SQL Server queries but it’s actually the scripting languages.
I would like to construct various list boxes. For example,
Search the criteria below based on the unique reference number: *Requestors Email
*Assigned to
*Category
*Status
I would like the drop down lists to populate based on what is selected in the previous list box. For example if Requesters email is selected then on those assigned to that email will show up. This will then populate the category accordingly.
HOWEVER this is the tricky part, I might just want to search Status based on the unique reference number. So how I would I construct this? Would I need different submit buttons? Ideally I want to search the database with just one click.
ps: i have to use frontpage 2003
hope you can help..
