I have installed a bad driver for the modem in win2k.
In the next start my CPU works at 100% full time and
the OS doesn't work...It works only in "temporary modality".
Unfortunately, in that modality, is not possible (or I'm not
able to...) to manage the Modem through the Control Panel in
order to remove the bad driver.
I also don't remember the name of the bad driver !!!!!
But I need to remove it in order to let my OS work!!!!
How can I solve this problem ???
I need to know where are stored some information about the
current modem driver!!! Maybe the system registry ???
But where ???
I need help !!!!!!!!

There's a couple of options available. One is to reboot the machine and press F8 when WIndows starts loading. This will display a menu of startup options, including Last Known Good configuration. Selecting this will boot the OS in the configuration it had when it last started normally. If it then discovers a "new" modem and offers to install it, refuse it and let it boot normally. Then use Device Manager to remove the modem completely, power down and physically extract the modem. The next startup should be mormal, unless you've booted several times since the problem began and all the backup configurations are bad.
Another choice is to boot from the original CD and allow the Install process to begin. You can then select the Repair option to attempt to restore the original configuration as it was first installed. Before you attempt this, though, remove the modem physically from the machine and make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the CD first. The CD itself is bootable, but the BIOS has to look there first, before trying the HDD. This option will also require you to reinstall any hotfixes, patches, or service packs you've installed.

I have developed a software using visual C++ 5.0. It works fine in Windows 95 and Windows 98. It does not work when executed under Windows 2000. The error message is as below:
"The instruction at "0x10217a1f" referenced at "0x0043c1a0. The memory could not be "written".
Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program"
Please help me out from this problem.:

Well Win9x and Win2k are not directly related. Win9x is based on DOS, while Win2k is based on NT.
You will first want to start by installing VC++ on a Win2k box and debug the code there. If this is not posible then you are going to have to put some more information in your code around the area where you suppect the error to be so it outputs to the console and have the person using this on Win2k keep running it for you. Eitherway you have to find the line(s) of code where you are doing something bad to Win2k.
Then you need you look at the platform SDK documentation for Win2k and go over this part of your code, and either find a compatible fix that will work on Win9x and Win2k or not support Win2k/XP or to privide differnt version of your application, one for Win9x and one for Win2k.
I hope this helps. FYI, that error message not helpful because it dealing with memory locations in RAM that are system dependent.

Is there some way to change default (and unpredictable) behaviour of Win2000 Printer Spooler when there is no paper on
local printer? The message "Out of Paper" appears a long time after paper is over, and sometimes it looks like spooler forgets to show this message. My users are confused with this situation and I want to get such message immidiately.

The Spooler service in Win2K is flaky, but I doubt that this is Microsoft's fault entirely. I've seen a variety of behaviors on different machines, and the difference seems to be in the printer model. My Lexmark, for instance, has to complete a job; cancelling a print job leaves a stub file in the spooler folder that will block any later attempts to print until the machine is restarted. An HP I've used allows jobs to be cancelled okay, but about 40% of the time it fails to print at all on the first try. I'd bet the problem you're having is due to the driver, not Windows - check for a newer version on the web.
Alternatively, if you have more than one printer assigned to the print device, you can set different priorities to make Windows pay closer attention to one over the other. This won't help overall performance, though.

Gives a good start in driver development. Shows how to set up the development systems and use tools like WinDbg. Includes nice code samples.
Inside Windows 2000 Third edition - David A. Solomon, Mark E. Russinovich
A nice introduction to Windows 2000 system mechanics. Seems to be primarly written for advanced system administrators, but contains some nice information for developers too. No code, but lots of system experiments with the kernel debugger (a tool for live debugging included, although it probably must be updated at SysInternals webpage to work).
Windows NT/2000 Native API Reference - Gary Nebbett
A reference. Wait until you understand the basics, then get this one. Some say the information is to accurate to find out whitout the Windows source code. The author claims he had no such access.

Microsoft is releasing the new version of the DDK (next month, I think). If you have an MSDN subscribtion, you will be able to download for free. Otherwise, try using the old suite until you feel the need to upgrade...

LAst week I built my first WinXP Peer-to-Peer network, and after much hassle with undocumented bs, it was working perfectly. Today I spent most of the day on the phone trying to install a program that requires a shared database. I installed the first station, along with the master database, and all went well. The db was installed in the root of the C: drive, as should work with any previous version of Windoze. But when I installed the client of another PC and tried to access the db, it told me that access was denied! I shared the bejeezus out of the db - Everyone has full control, and all four users have admin accounts on all three machines. But still it insists that access is denied. Online Help is useless, as always with Micro$oft products, and the problem is worsened because Dell has replaced the standard help with their own even more clueless help system!
The default simple network sharing option is off, and security is shamefully lax with all users having full control of everything on all machines, but the so^ of a b*&^h will not allow access!!! I uninstalled the original db and reinstalled it to the host's Shared Folders directory, and I can now suddenly access it from other PCs on the network, but I don't want it there. Is there any way to make a WinXP P2P network actually useful?

Strange problem Roger.
Reading your post I get the feeling that there is something incorrect with the database configuration, rather than sharing, but I'm not really sure.
What kind of database are you using ?

It's a straight flatfile - .mdb database. The mfr tech had me install it to the C: root, which works fine on all previous versions of Windows. Everything installed perfectly on the primary host, and after sharing the db, I could browse it from other hosts on the net. But I can't open it without an 'Access Denied' message.
In XP, you can add share users via a dialog; the dialog lists all users by machine and username (ie, \\UWCRR1\Roger). You can look in other locations, but clicking that button displays only the one host, not the other two. In Help, this is supposed to mean that the machine isn't on a network, yet print sharing, Internet routing, and file sharing from the Shared Folders directory works fine - obviously it's networked correctly.
I removed the program after the tech hung up in frustration and reinstalled it to the Shared Folders directory, and suddenly it worked correctly on the other hosts. But I don't want to use that directory - it clutters up the view for all users, and might get damaged by one of the users accidentally trying to open it. Access dbs are fragile that way, and the users shouldn't have to deal with the visual clutter!

Problem solved! I think...
XP will not share with users unless all users are using passwords - the default user setttings won't work. Yesterday I reconfigured all users to have passwords, then created a group for the db program users and added users to it. I re-installed the program and shared the db folder with the new group and, voila!, it worked
Many thanks to the authors of this[^] article! Maybe I'll summarize it and publish a tutorial for other CP users...

You can download it from the MSDN subscribers web-site. If you have a subscription to Enteprise or above. It's a bit of a big download though.

I suppose I could copy the CD into a folder on my HD and email it to you, but I wonder how long that would take? And whether it would be legal? This is a US-only distribution, but last time I checked, Sweden was friendly Probably best not to go there...
