Hi all...
I want to create an application that will run on several systems.
I want to transer data between systems using my application over WAN.
I want to know that what should I do for providing an interface between my application for communication,i.e. what should I prefer, either creating a web interface or creating sockets.
If you have any example then please send it to me.
Thanks...
Gagan.

It all depends on what the application is.
If you want it to be available on ANY PC without needing to install a client on the remote PC's then a web application is best. However a basic client/server type application is probably easier and faster to create.
Simply create a project and add the Winsock.dll to it.
You can find lots of articles on using Winsock in client/server applications just by Google'ing it.
I have created a vast application suite that has a server and several different clients connect to it to send alarm messages and the server dispatches alarm notifications to any client that should get it. Another easy one to make is a simple client/server based chat program.
Hope this helps!

AFAIK, the width depends on the printer setup parameters you have specified in the report designer.

I want an expandable gridview which displays child rows.
I have already implemented it using a parent and child gridviews concept.by having child grid inside itemtemplate column within div tag and display or hide it using javascript function. this affects performance.If i have 20 records displayed it will 20 child gridviews.
can any one tell me a approach which will not affect performance as well as do not postback.
Thanks in advance.

You're looking for the ASP.NET forum[^].
Youre question has nothing to do with VB.NET at all. But, you may also want to look into third party grid controls if you don't want to put the time into creating your own grid.

Good, you have my permission to proceed. Was there anything further?

Google for something like a "Contact Manager" application. That's about as close as you're going to get to what you described. You'll, of course, have to modify it to your own needs.

ambiuous namespace means your application namespace name or any two namespace in your application have the similler name. So try to use the full path of the name space. It will work.

Let me clear up the other guys explanation.
It means you have the same class name defined in two different namespaces you're importing. You could have given a class in your code the same name as a class that Microsoft wrote in the .NET Framework.

The file will have two fields(1. UserName,2. Password)

Thanks In Advance

I have an application with a main window that shows a gridview of records that can be selected and buttons along the bottom that offer options either updating one of the records or creating a new one. I use the same for for both of these functions I just make cosmetic changes to the title and buttons depending on which function the user chooses. When the user chooses to add a new record to the database a new record is created and loaded into the form. The user may then put whatever data they require into the record then they must then choose to either save the record or cancel out of the form which then deletes the blank record from the database. The only way to close this form is to select one of those options. The problem I am running into is that apparently the users are opening a form to input a new record then becoming distracted by phone calls or other processes and forgetting that they have this form open. When they return to the app they are just closing the main form which of course closes all of it's open forms which then leaves me with blank records in my database.
What I would like to do is to perform a check before I close the main window to see if any other windows have been left open and run through my code to delete the database record before the application completely closes. I can use the FindWindow function to check for the open window on the window closing event of my main window but am at a loss as to how to stop the window from closing until I manage the situation.
Can anyone offer me any suggestions?
Thanks for all your help,
Judy

In the Form.FormClosing event, you can cancel the closing, i.e.:
Private Sub Form1_FormClosing(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.FormClosingEventArgs) Handles Me.FormClosing
'If there are are windows open, maybe tell the user and switch to them.
e.Cancel = True
End Sub
Would the "Shutdown mode" option in the project's settings be of any help? Maybe try setting it to "When last form closes."
|
|
|
|
|
Thank you so much JZ! That took care of the problem. I can give the user a message then send the open form to the front so they can close it cleanly.
I'll look into the shutdown mode option on the project also.
Thanks for all the help,
Judy

Which language? VB, C#? Which version of VS? 7, 8, 9?
If v8 or later You could use a TableAdapter with ClearBeforeFill set to False provided that the primary keys of all tables have as you say "common and unique values"
|
|
|
|
|
I am using VB.Net 2008 with an access database and i am using a TableAdapter to fill the datagrid.
I am new to vb and do not now how to code for this. What i do have so far is that my program is working fine loading the datagridview from a single table. To link to the sub tables and add a column for every row of the sub table is my problem - i do not know how to code it. Here is my code so far:
' Iniatilize Connection
cn = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection( _
"provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; " & _
"data source= " & Directory.GetCurrentDirectory & "\XXXDatabase.mdb")
'Populate Members DataGrid
da = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM XXXDetails", cn)
ds = New System.Data.DataSet
da.Fill(ds)
DataGridView1.DataSource = ds.Tables(0)
cn.Close()

Mmm, Don't know why you're doing it in code when you can use the 'visual' designers to accomplish the same thing more easily.
I would do the following:
1 add a new dataset to your project using 'Add New Item'. Choose a name for it, like 'dsProducts'
2 when you can see the new dataset in Solution Explorer, double click it to open the dataset designer.
3. Open Server Explorer and use the wizard to create a new data connection to your access database.
4 Once created you'll be able to navigate in VS to see the tables in the access db.
5 click and drag each of the tables from the server explorer to the dataset designer. This will automatically create the table adapters you need for all the tables.
See if you can get this far, then come back here
|
|
|
|
|
Thankyou, I have now done all 5 steps.
What next?
|
|
|
|
|
OK.
6 In the dataset designer click and select the main table (the one you've already used to fill the datagrid.
7 right-click on the TableAdapter row where it says Fill, GetData and choose 'Configure'
8 When a window appears you'll see the 'SELECT' statement for the query that VS uses to fill the table.
9 Click 'Query Builder' You'll now see a representation of your table showing all the fields in the top pane
10 Right click the top pane and choose 'Add table'. Do this for all the other tables you want to get data from
11 Now you need to link the 'Common ID fields' of all the tables. If you've set the primary keys correctly then these fields will be in bold type. To link the fields, click the key field in the main table and drag and drop it on to the corresponding field in one of the other tables. Repeat the process for the other tables.
12 Now click the check boxes next to the fields that contain the additional data you want to see in the data grid. When you do this you'll see the sql statement change. When you're done, click the OK button to close the Query Designer, then click Finish to close the TableAdapter Configuration window.
13 In the dataset designer, your main table should now contain the additional fields
14 Save the changes and close the dataset designer.
Let me know when you've done the above.
