N0, both(Application and Static variables ) are not reliable as both
are not thread-safe. You need to handle locking yourself in order to ensure the integrity of the data.

ok thanks sandeep but my requirement is to use these variables shared by multiple users and multiple pages of website...

can static variables fullfill this requirement????

ok if i take application variables round about 100 then will they effect performance of website or not???

I think it is going to hit the performance in some manner if you see user point of view he won't see much difference (won't take much time)

Can you tell me why you want ? any business rule you want to apply ?
Why don't you use database for that then ?

Sandeep,

There is no performance difference in accessing a static variable and application variable. ASP.NET implements application variables in static fields. If you look carefully, you will see that ASP.NET is using HttpStaticObjectsCollection for keeping the application variable value. So you can't compare the performance.

brother you were talking about data caching through configuration file...??
can i use more than 50 variables in with hard coded data in it???
and will it be better than application variable if yes then please provide me the code i dont want to use database.

Why do you need this? I'd put all these in a configuration file and read from there. Cache the results to avoid reading all time.

Just read the configuration value and assign to cache. Read books online about cache and it's usage.

There are few Points that you need to always care as given

1: Keep as low size of session data as you can.
2: Keep minimal data in session.
3: Try to transfer minimal data to server from Client.
4: Keep the size of the client pages(HTML etc) very less.
5: Use javascript as much as you can

Use best pratctices for server side coding.

This is not possible to say all issues in the points and what to do and what to not. There are many books in the market which are totally devoted to performance tuning of Web application from Back end to front end.
Some times it depends on the requirement you have to look for business requirement rather than performance.
So my kind advice to you is buy one of these books or read MSDN online to get details information
Also you should know why these are issues ? the reason behind that issue is most important than the issue itself

I am developing a Website portal using ASP.Net ( C# ).
I want to restrict the number of users to 10 who are accessing my website simultaneously.
If 11th user want to access the website then it should prompt to user that "Website is too busy while processing request". When one of the 10 users leave the website then another user can visit that website.
Please help me in this regards how to implement this technique using ASP.Net ( C# ).

I doubt if anything will be reliable as you need to take into account the browser back button, user simply leaving the browser on your page, session timeout etc etc.

It does beg the question as to why you only want 10 users at a time, but I guess thats up to you Smile | :)
