I can retrieve a workstation IP address using client side JavaScript with Netscape. Does anyone know how to do this with Internet Explorer?

Hello,
In my spare time, I'm playing around with the IE5 HTA feature (HTML applications). I'm just wondering if anybody has experience with it and if it's a good choice for small scripted applications with a GUI? I'm using Windows Scripting Host to have scripting, but then I have no GUI. So I figured using this HTA thing was an easy way to get a simple GUI for my scripts...

P.S. Does anybody know how to get links to other HTA applications working properly (if I click a link to a second HTA application, it opens in a new window, and it asks if I want to save the file, or just open it up...). I'm using IE5.0.

Hello, i want to create a message board on my website and i don't know where to start. I want to know which programming language does it has to be created in. I want a message board such as the one on Code Project where on the site it updates about the latest messages.
I currently am a expert in HTML, JAVA, JAVASCRIPT, VB. If it requires me to learn another programming language, i will do it. Can anyone tell me which programming language it would be. I also what know what type of server it would run on.

You can program a message board in just about any language you prefer. Perl (Ultimate BB && Dr. B's), Cold Fusion, ASP (this one!), Java, ... you can even do it in C (if you were really sadistic) I am going to take a stab in the dark and guess that you have not done any CGI work before? Might i suggest you pick a language that would be easy to learn given your current skill knowledge. Since you claim to be an expert at VB i would suggest ASP... which is essentially VB script. If you prefer Java, you can write yours as an applet, or even as a Serverlet. Another thing to take into account is what your hosting company will support. If you are running on a Micro$oft OS, i would suggest ASP or cold fusion. If you are under a unix flavor, i might suggest Perl or C.
With all this said, you are now going to have to learn how to use a relational database. Trying to tackle something like a large bulletin board where you have tens of thousands of posts, you will have to have a good understanding of relational databases.
At this point in your web programming carrier, you might want to start off with something a little easer like a guest book (utilizing all these tools) so you can get familiar with web programming... then you can move on to the more difficult tasks.

If you have the time to learn PHP, you can make a forum with that as well. Code Project's forums are very sexy. Someday, I'll have to learn ASP.

The best message boards, in my opinion, are made with Active Server Pages, which you can use Visual Basic in. You might have to do a little research on ASP, but it is mostly in itself pretty simple to do if you already know VB. You would also need a ASP capable server, like Windows NT, I think 2000 might be also.

What I need to do is access a text file that will be on each computer on our network via ASP (or another scripting language). The file will include information about the computer itself like the IP address, computername, etc. All the stuff from winipcfg.exe or ipconfig.exe.
I want to get at this info so I can display a page on each PC using Active Directory.

Can you please tell me what is wrong with this script. Every time I load the HTML document into IE5.5 it gives me an error message that says:
"Line: 7
Error: object required"
Line 7 contains this:
window.status = "X=" + window.event.x + " Y=" + window.event.y;
What drives me crazy is that the script is too short to have hidden bugs. Another thing, it seems like setInterval() is what causes the error because when I omit it and make a little modification to the script it works without problems (look code listing #2). So, could you please tell me what I did wrong?

When using IE, next to the URL you are looking at in the Address box, you usually see the MicroSoft "e" and page icon. I notice on some sites this gets replaced with a customized logo. This logo also appears next to the URL if you add the page to your list of favorites.
Does anybody know how this is accomplished? Its a cool touch.

Just add a 16x16 icon named "favicon.ico" to the root directory of your Web site.

I'm having difficulty getting my IIS to start.
After requesting a Start, I receive an error message that the server isn't responding in a timely fashion.
I uninstalled IIS and reinstalled it to see if this would alleviate the problem; but, it still won't start.
I'm running Win2000 Pro for ASP development, using VisualInterDev.
Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I am successfully executing a jscript function when the user clicks on the broswer's Back button. Depending on the results of a confirm dialog I want to be able to cancel the History.Back action.
How would I go about doing this, or can it be done (WITHOUT losing the page's form data)?

Hi!
At work we'll be creating a new website soon, and I'm looking for some sort of ASP/SQL website "framework", something like a freely available collection of ASP code, documentation and SQL datastructure that creates a basic database-driven website. Any links/recommendations/info would be much appreciated!
Background:
We have programming knowledge in-house, but all the 'real' programmers are on other assignments, so it's left for me as very junior developer to create the new site, and learn something in the process. Finding solutions for the individual tasks is not a problem, but how to organise the "big picture" is somthing I have no clue about... 
The website must:
- have identical content & look across at least 2 languages, likely more to come.
- have a access-restricted area with various tech info for partners.
- be searchable
- have some way of adding content that isn't more technical than a superuser could be taught how to do it.
Now I don't suppose the free "framework" I'm looking for will do all of the above, I'll add what we require, and most likely contribute my/our code back.
Any suggestions?
