Hi
I was just wondering if there is any easy way to build a ASP.NET frontend for an existing C++/win32 based application for some heavy processing.
I have this C++ application which I use to do some file/db input, process, store result to file/db. Now I want to be able to start/pause/stop processing and read status from the web-browser.
So how can I, by using ASP.NET (and the nature of http), communicate with this process?
Any ideas? I would really appreciate it...

Well, from ASP.NET frontend it can be done. But be sure to check the status when the page is loading. Its because, IIS creates a new session for every new session. So if the process is already started or stopped from another browser, you cannot start it again. So before doing anything just check the status.
You can also use WCF, the new concept to do the same.

Whether or not the service/process is already running and just waiting for a signal to process, or the web-app starts the application doesn't really matter as long as the method to achieve it is "failsafe".
Which solution would you recommend?
Making the background process listening on a local UDP-socket and send UDP packets from the web-app to control it? Using the Windows message queue and push messages into this queue from the web-app? Or is there any "built in" method which is better?
Perhaps I can start the process from the web-app, and store the identifier/process handler somewhere (file? mssql?) and then watch this handler for whether the app is running or not, use it to kill the process, and etc? In this case I need to "lock" some object I assume so that two parallel page-requests won't start two processes over just one?
I am really looking for the best possible solution...the most "correct" one. If not for this particular app, then for learning purposes.

I think some error is happening during your redirection, so that the session is getting lost somewhere.
Debug each line in the login process.

Please give some details along with code
1. How you are creating the session? Are you doing any thing in homepage?
2. What about the authentication / authorization entries in your web.config file?

Use this code:
Response.Clear();
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment;filename=FileName.doc");
Response.Charset = "";
Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache);
Response.ContentType = "application/vnd.word";
System.IO.StringWriter stringWrite = new System.IO.StringWriter();
System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter htmlWrite = new HtmlTextWriter(stringWrite);
myDataGrid.RenderControl(htmlWrite);
Response.Write(stringWrite.ToString());
Response.End();

I guess you have a css-class problem with a width or a height-property.
(this is the best answer I can give, You do not exactly tell what your problem is. I have to guess from the pictures)

This is nothing to do with ASP.Net.

Why ? Did you give the remote System Credentials (user id and Password ) ?
Try to dowload WMICodeCreator and Explore the tool . You will get the answer .

Just call a server page, you can use cgi scripts if you dont have any development software, to send your mail. ...
You can call the page using AJAx.
If this is not what you want, you can use
mailto:emailaddress
This is the simplest...

Well I figured out a way to do it, but it requires that you have the full version of Adobe installed on your PC so that you can gain access to the Adobe APIs (which doesn't technically qualify as a free way to do it). Here is the code I used to read the contents of a PDF. You will have to add a reference to the Adobe APIs in your project:
Dim objPDFPage As AcroPDPage
Dim objPDFDoc As New AcroPDDoc
Dim objPDFAVDoc As AcroAVDoc
Dim objAcroApp As AcroApp
Dim objPDFRectTemp As Object
Dim objPDFRect As New AcroRect
Dim lngTextRangeCount As Long
Dim objPDFTextSelection As AcroPDTextSelect
Dim temptextcount As Long
Dim strText As String
Dim lngPageCount As Long
Dim Fora As Long
objPDFDoc.Open(tbdocdisplaypath.Text)
lngPageCount = objPDFDoc.GetNumPages
For Fora = 0 To lngPageCount - 1
objPDFPage = objPDFDoc.AcquirePage(Fora)
objPDFRectTemp = objPDFPage.GetSize
objPDFRect.Left = 0
objPDFRect.right = objPDFRectTemp.x
objPDFRect.Top = objPDFRectTemp.y
objPDFRect.bottom = 0
' objPDFTextSelection = objPDFDoc.CreateTextSelect(lngPageCount, objPDFRect)
objPDFTextSelection = objPDFDoc.CreateTextSelect(Fora, objPDFRect)
' Get The Text Of The Range
temptextcount = objPDFTextSelection.GetNumText
For lngTextRangeCount = 1 To objPDFTextSelection.GetNumText
doctext = doctext & objPDFTextSelection.GetText(lngTextRangeCount - 1)
Next
doctext = doctext & vbCrLf
Next
doctype = "PDF"
objPDFDoc.Close()
