I didn't realize that we had a Python formum.
I'll have to start watching it, as Python is my second favorite language after C++.

Seems things are odd right now. I came in here, didn't see any posts, made the one above and then after posting, saw that there were two other posts ahead of mine.
I replied to one of them (which seems to now be linked to this subject rather than the one I replied to) and now I only see this subject.
Weird.

And now, after posting the above, things seem to be back to normal.
Oh well. Still cool that we have a Python forum here.

I'm new to both Perl and SQL and have been given a project to attempt writing a Perl script that will execute an SQL query. Then extract the information generated by the query and import it to a Microsoft Office Excel spreadsheet. Can someone point me in the right direction? Dazed and Confused. All help will be greatly appreciated.

You should start in Perl doc and Perl reference online. This is a common task and usually achieved through DBI module. Here's a guide from CodeProject KnowledgeBase[^] That takes care of accessing data from database using an SQL query. Once you have data in a perl variable, you can do all sorts of manipulation (I'm thinking along the lines of regexp and what not).
Now onto your Excel problem. Perl has a couple of modules (OLE, Spreadheet::Excel, etc.) to deal with MS products. I have never used them, but I have heard good things about Spreadsheet::Excel. I just did a quick search and found a nice tutorial/article on IBM developerWorks series. Here's a link[^].
I hope this points you to the right direction. And in case you are not familiar with installation of Perl modules, I'd suggest searching for Perl CPAN. Its homepage will point you to installation instructions and whatever else you might need to get the modules up and running.

Dear divyamistry,
I appreciate the help. It's not to often you receive advise that so in depth. Sorry
I didn't get back to you earlier, but we've been having some system problems at work and things have been kind of crazy. I look into your suggestions, they seem like what I've been looking for, who knows, maybe one day I'll be able to return the favor.
Thx again, sk8te320!

So, I thought I'd suggest which modules etc. to look up. If you have already done that, and have all the modules installed, would you please let me know where you are stuck? Are you able to verify that you have all the modules installed? Let me know if I could be of any help. I'm no Perl pro, but I've done similar stuff earlier, so I may be able to help you out on this one.

Which RDBMS are you trying to connect to?
For the last two years I have been querying SQL Server and writing the results to an Excel spreadsheet with great success.

Hi Fred,
The past few months have been kind of crazy, personal life and all. Project was put on the back burner for a few (Thank God!), but now I must press on. In regard to your question I am using SQL 2005. I was told that after the extract I would possibly need to convert the query information into a .csv file before attempting to convert it Excel. Let me knwo what you think!
Thx sk8te320

Yes, Ajax is the only way.
For the samples, there are many samples in the web, just needs a simple searching.
For example :

AJAX is the way to go if you want to make calls to the server without refreshing the page. It makes XML calls to the server. Here's is a script you can use-
http://whatsaranjit.com/includes/grabData.js
The variables explained-
this.value: variable passed as get variable q
ID of div: the id of the div that should be alter to contain the new data
page for processing: PHP, .NET, CF, etc page that will process q and return output
Take a look and try it out. Thanks.

Hello, i am planning to do email with encryption system embedded inside the mail system itself..
Currently, i am not sure on how to do such embedded program (creating a encryption program that plugs to the email itself when u run the email system)..
can somebody gimme ideas on how to do that? i have decided to use postfix and dovecot to setup and the mail system, probably with squirrel mail as well..
ANd which programming language more suitable for encyrption programs?? i know most of the language can be used, but which is the best..

You need to write the "Encryption" like you said - in a client - and make sure the Email is readable - (in part) on all email clients - like:
"This email is encrypted with SuperSafe" or something, a link to
your web site, and below have something like what I have below.
---------------------------------------------------------------
:SUPERSAFE START:
jkahlkjrh34khjqknwekjfhskadfbskdjafk;sfsdaf
fdasfksdajfkl;jskalfjklsa;jflsajfdsklfjsdak
fsdalkjsadfjsjalkf;jskdafjsakdlfjskdal;asfa
:SUPERSAFE STOP:
---------------------------------------------------------------
Now - your language of choice might be dictated by the email client you wish to code agaist. I personally would use ANY LANGUAGE that compiles to Binary... .Net? Nope. php? Nope. Ruby? Nope. Java? Nope.
C/C++/Pascal/FreePascal/Assembler <--- I Recommend one of these.

Know way to many languages... master of none!

Hello everyone. Im not quite sure either Im in the right forum since my question is basically on C programming, coding in the linux environment. After I gcc, I got this warning message
"warning: passing argument 1 of 'strcpy' makes pointer from integer without a cast"
When I run the program, I will have a segmentation error fault. This is the code snippet below.
static const char *opt_socket_name[5];
main()
{
int i = 0;
strcpy(*opt_socket_name[i], "testing")
printf("%s", opt_socket_name);
}
Im not quite sure why this happen. Can anyone here help me and explain what is going on behind the scene. Can you guys also give an opinion on how to make it work. A brief on what I am doing is actually, creating multiple socket with different names. I am just about to create different names, but the warning above appeared. Is there any other options to do this? The above code is just a small testing code to make the strcpy() works. Im quite new in programming so currently im learning. Thanks

It looks like you're trying to copy text into a string, but there are quite a few mistakes in the code:
1. A string is an array of characters, for eg. char str[100]. Therefore opt_socket_name[5] is a string that can hold 4 characters (+1 for the null terminator)
3. A * represents a pointer - you can also use a character pointer as a string, but it would point to an existing array of characters.
4. You use either * or an array. In your case, *opt_socket_name[5] means an array of 5 strings.
5. const = constant. Don't use that unless you don't want to modify the string.
So here's what your code should look like:
static char opt_socket_name[20];
main()
{
strcpy(opt_socket_name, "testing");
printf("%s", opt_socket_name);
}
If you're looking for an explanation for your warning and the segmentation fault, here it is: as I mentioned, in your original program, opt_socket_name[i] is a string and *opt_socket_name[i] points to a single character in the string. What you are passing to strcpy is a single character, which in C can be implicitly typecast to an integer, which in turn is typecast to a pointer and hence the warning.
