No, that is good advice though so I will try this next.

I've seen something like that before - in my case I had a single file that couldn't be deleted, but could be moved and renamed. I just hid it somewhere, as it annoyed the hell out of me.
|
|
|
|
|
Does the filename have a trailing dot but is missing the suffix (filetype)?
|
|
|
|
|
Almost! It has a trailing space ... and I just deleted it by using a \\?\ prefix.
|
|
|
|
|
Yep, it's the same type of problem, explorer.exe isn't reading those files.
|
|
|
|
|
Turns out the file had a space at the end of it's name ("FILENAME.ZIP ") and the Win32 API doesn't like names like this. The trick is to delete it from a command-prompt using a \\?\ prefix, e.g.:
del "\\?\C:\Documents and Settings\FILENAME.ZIP "
|
|
|
|
|
Good of you to post the solution, Rob
But what does the \\?\ do? Wouldn't this suffice? del "C:\Documents and Settings\FILENAME.ZIP "
Cheers,
Vıkram.

I love how that blog blames the Mac for the problem. We should save that one for Christian.

Thanks, Rob. I learnt something today.

Hi Dinna,
Try opening up task manager again and where you see the outside border slightly left/right of where you can resize the window.
Here is where you need to double click and your tabs should come back.

I have searched everywhere but can find no info on how to use a .mof file to Delete an instance of Filter, Consumer, and FilterToConsumerBinding. Can anyone please help?
I know I can recompile and set everything to a null value, but this is untidy.

|
|
|

Try to use #pragma deleteinstance[^].
You need to use the Wmi object path of the instance you want to delete with it. For __EventFilter and __EventConsumer derived classes the key property is Name, so you shouldn't have any problems. __FilterToConsumerBinding could be a bit tricky because both Filter and Consumer properties are keys (and also references).

Thank you. I agree that the Consumer and Filter instances do not present a problem and I have seen examples of (Delete) FilterToConsumerBinding with so many "\" characters that I cannot get anything to work. Here is the MOF file I am trying to "delete":
#pragma namespace ("\\\\.\\root\\subscription")
instance of ActiveScriptEventConsumer as $Cons
{
Name = "ASEC";
ScriptingEngine = "VBScript";
ScriptFileName = "c:\\asec.vbs";
};
instance of __EventFilter as $Filt
{
Name = "EF";
Query = "SELECT * FROM __InstanceDeletionEvent WITHIN 5 "
"WHERE TargetInstance ISA \"Win32_Process\" "
"AND TargetInstance.Name = \"calc.exe\"";
QueryLanguage = "WQL";
EventNamespace = "root\\cimv2";
};
instance of __FilterToConsumerBinding
{
Filter = $Filt;
Consumer = $Cons;
};
Any further assistance would be much appreciated!

Well, here it is:
#pragma namespace ("\\\\.\\root\\subscription")
#pragma deleteinstance ("ActiveScriptEventConsumer.Name=\"ASEC\"", nofail)
#pragma deleteinstance ("__EventFilter.Name=\"EF\"", nofail)
#pragma deleteinstance ("__FilterToConsumerBinding.Consumer="
"\"\\\\\\\\.\\\\root\\\\subscription:ActiveScriptEventConsumer.Name=\\\"ASEC\\\"\","
"Filter=\"\\\\\\\\.\\\\root\\\\subscription:__EventFilter.Name=\\\"EF\\\"\"", nofail)
If you have different names for __EventFilter and ActiveScriptEventConsumer just replace EF and ASEC with the leaving everything else as it is. Personally, I would use this only if any other options (ones that let you use queries, like VBSCript, System.Management namespace or PowerShell) were unavailable.

Many thanks indeed for this, Sir! You see what I mean about the vast number of "\"s. I do have CIM Studio installed, but this is to delete instances on another computer where I can only use Mofcomp.
Once again, thanks for your reply.

Hi, currently I'm studying from this book[^] and now I'm get stuck on chapter 6 when I try to setup the cluster server in lesson 1. After I read from the book and follow an instruction, I setup my machine in the following manner:
1. Server01 running windows 2003 Enterprise and configure as Domain Controller, two network card and two hard disk were install.
2. Network configure as the following: Private: IP address 192.168.0.1, no default gateway, DNS point to its IP address. Public: IP address 192.168.1.1, no default gateway, DNS point to its IP address.
3. The first hard disk use all space formatted with NTFS and install windows 2003. The second hard disk is use all space and formatted with NTFS and leave it blank. Both disk are IDE disk.
The problem occure when I try start and configure cluster administration prior to install my exchange.
When I start the analyze phase, an error occure that there is no quorum disk found and its will use the local resource.
On the wizard page when they ask me to define the public IP address, i have enter an IP address of the public interface (mention above) but it not allow me go start. It display the message that IP is already in use.
I really difficult to work with this problem and if any one has the solution please let me know because i don't want to give up reading this book. This book cause me alot of the problem before until now.

Hi,
I'm having a very weird issue with my laptop running Windows XP Pro SP3.
Everytime I click the shutdown button from the Start menu, I get the option of installing updates and shutting down the computer. This has happened at least 4 or 5 times in a row now, and everytime I choose to install the update(s), it only installs a single update and then shuts down.
What's going on here?

The update is failing installation. Every time I've had something like that happen, I've ended up rebuilding the machine.
Check the event log for any errors.
