It is hard enough for us editors to get the horizontal scrolling right, so I doubt article authors will get it right anytime soon.
Anyway we do our best and you just need to please be patient with new articles that are submitted which scroll horizontally.

Shouldn't "prev" go back and "next" go forward?
I've only noticed it now, obviously been blind for the past year.

It works the same as most email systems...
If your at page 1... you go to the next page... then to go back to the first page you go to the previous page you were at. Think it makes sense... but maybe it doesn't.

It does; but back and forward are related to the ordering of the posts. In this case it is a descending order based on the date posted (posts go from the newest, first, to the oldest, last).
Back should take you toward the first post in the order, in this case the newest post; and next should take you to toward the last post in the order, in this case the oldest post.

The name may be "the lounge mirror".
Purpose:I hate the lounge sometimes,It always too hot in seeming a settled time in a day,when a hot discuss occurred,it left other's postings pages behind.
Then no one will bother to navigate pages to reply to someone.
So I think it will be nice to give such postings' author an chance to repost the original ones to get attentions in the "lounge mirror".
But of course the chance is only once,one can not post back to "lounge" again.

Or better still, there could be a setting which would allow only a limited maximum number of messages per thread. If a user wants to see the full thread, he/she'll have to click on a link to get a full view. If the user wants, he/she can choose to have the settings as they are now, ie view all the messages in the threads. This will ensure that threads do not fall off due to a long and popular thread without the need of any duplication.

When a topic gets audience, it should automatically start a chat room. There is indeed no point in having twentys of two-word posts.

I often see myself histerically move the mouse to click on Prev/Next buttons when browsing the CP forum for next message pages.
It gets on my nerves to have to scroll just to find this button.
What follows is a humble suggestion as a general navigation improvement, taking advantage of a keyboard accelerator.
In fact, this navigation experience could be enhanced, and simplified with a key shortcut, for instance Alt+X to go next page.
How does this works. Well, you CP administrators know that the Prev and Next buttons are in fact simple links. What is needed to enable a given accelerator is just add a value for the accessKey="X" attribute in the <a href="..."> link.
Now when the user presses Alt+X (X is near the Alt key, which is fine), the hyperlink gets the focus. In turn, we add this tiny onfocus event handler : onfocus="location.href=this.href"
which as anyone guesses will execute the link itself. For sake of Netscape/Opera compatibility, it can be even simpler to just reproduce the actual link on the focus event handler, instead of javascript code.
What about that ?

The accelerator effectively suppresses the need to scroll, target the Next button, and click, which was to me a useless repetitive task when navigating the threads.
There is no standard and effective HTML way of declaring a trigger to go next page (I am not talking about the page down scroll of course). I see it as a major lack, especially on forums.
Of course, I could change the CP thread folding option, so I see more threads in one page, but I don't want to use something else than the dynamic option.
Adding a keyboard shortcut to go next page is from what I have tested : seamless (does not change the look), handy (your left hand typically does nothing (hum... )).
On top of that, using only the mouse for interaction is boring after a while : alternating with keyboard makes it better : while we are talking about that, may be that's the reason we see off-topic messages sometimes : those who are bored with their mouse start new threads with offtopic messages, just a self-massage.

What actually always confuses me is that there are two version of the lounge. The one at www.codeproject.com/lounge.asp and the www.codeproject.com/script/comments/forums.asp?forumid=1159
Wouldnt it be nice when both looked and worked the same way? (I prefer the later one anyway)

The answer to that is that it's really annoying when you use the Lounge from the main forums.asp and reply to a message which then throws you into lounge.asp. It's slightly confusing for new members that the whole format at the top changes and it often blows your "new" markers out.
Not a major complaint but worth fixing.
