Hi Srinivas,
It looks, you have joined CP Today. So Welcome to CodeProject
In CodeProject there are some certains rules and regulations for asking question.

Not too sure what you are trying to achieve - could you give a bit more detail, please?

sock.receive() is giving exception when it is waiting for a long time...how can i solve this

Maybe the debugger doesn't like the socks it's receiving..? Just kidding...
Well, can you please post the exception message? Or a snippet of the code that's giving you grief? There is an option on the bottom of that message that lets you copy the message to clipboard. Can you do that please?
I'll attempt to try and answer your question by asking you a question...
1. Is your client and/or server being blocked by your firewall? If so, You can either add your program to the firewall's safe-list, or use the port that most firewall's keep open for programs which I think is 8080. Without any specific info I can't really think of anything off the top of my head. It's too hot today.

i m doing an networked application.how do i make a program wait indefinitely until an input is received...like getche() or getch() in c

The best way is to wait on AutoResetEvent or ManualResetEvent and once the input is constructed, to signal those events

cant we do without using thread???

It seems to me that your desired result is to be interrupted once the input is received.
Interruption by definition means context-switching (threads).
You can apply a different approach (which is not a good design), by checking a boolean variable in a while loop. As stated this isn't desired as: 1. You will waste the cpu cycles 2. You will have threads anyway 3. You will need to deal with the race condition by applying locks - as one thread will read the boolean whereas another thread will write.

You don't need a lock for a bool though, just make it volatile and be careful when reading it (copy to local first)

I always thought it was cin << ReadKey(); ...Or has my memory gone KABOOM! again?

That's C++.

Input from what, the network? If so, just do a blocking read without timeout?
