Before the day when you where not allowed to smoke. If I was feeling bored at lunch time I would go and see how big the pile of cigarette ash I could shake out of the keyboard of other people in the office.

I put it in and start the machine when I go to bed, then take it out in the morning and let it air dry while I'm at work. Been doing this for a few years now and it works fine. The rare instance when it gets damaged, I go out and buy a new one (because, obviously, it was going to break soon anyway.)
I just have to remember to turn the heat dryer OFF when I run the dishwasher. I forgot to do that once; the results were not pretty.

when I came to this company more than 4 years ago, they gave me a really old keyboard, with tons of dust and grimes, yes, believe me, really really dirty, I even can not look through the grimes to identify the letters......
after years of usage, the most commonly used letters are very clean now(only the central part of each letter, you know ) and finally, the letters are totally worn out, not only the black ink, but also with holes in them how many press did I make
I really love that keyboard, but recently my boss bought a brand new high-end quad-core for me, and that keyboard was dumped

Cleaning the mouse does make a big difference when the rollers get clogged. Yes, optical mice do not have rollers but the pads can become sticky. I use a track ball and have to clean the three ball bearings.
As to keyboard that depends. As mine fills with beard hair it is just gross after a while.

Why?
My worthy advisory mr TrackBall and I do not meet very often, but there is one on one of the computers at the University - the one in the hall (so I do have reason to use it sometimes, when I don't know where I'm supposed to go). When we meet we always do battle, and he usually wins. Actually now that I think about it, he always wins. Or at least I always lose, even if mr TrackBall doesn't so much "win" as he does "stolidly sit idle while I walk away in defeat".

Bless the person who invented this wonderful contraption. Whenever I feel like it, I give the keyboard/mice/laptop air vents a few blasts of "air" and it's instantly cleaned! (I think ). Cleaning is made so easy and even fun.
I like to freeze things with it too.

At the current rate that species are becoming extinct, it is in the interest of biodiversity that I do not clean my keyboard.

Typing daily sends most keyboards that I use to an early grave (My mouse on the other hand still works OK)

You are buying crappy keyboards.

Actually, nope. But I use the keyboard more than 10 hours each day. That wears them down...

My current keyboard is over 5 years old at home. At work it was 7 to 10 before I replaced it with a $29 Microsoft keyboard / intellimouse optical combo last year. I have the same combo at home.

my oldest harddisk is over 16 years old, it should work if there is a suitable slot...
and so does my first mouse and keyboard, really working fine
but they are too old, so I sent them to somewhere corner, however, new mouses and keyboards are too crappy, most of them do not last long, especially mouses, I bought the best Logic-Tech I could find here and they only last for about 6 months before the clicks behave abnormal......

Have you tried the MX Revolution from Logitech? It's an (very) expensive mouse, but it's the only one which survived here for more than a year. (Most other mouses whent after 3-6 months straight to the litterbin.)

+1 for the MX Revolution. I'm quite angry at myself for losing the receiver for it...

Never clean any of it, but then the cleaners don't clean the office very well either. Had to do my screen the other day as I bit into a tomato and all the seeds and stuff squirted all over my screen. I don't recommend them as screen cleaners....We used to have a chap who regularly sneezed all over his screen at least once a day - it was disgusting - his screen that is

I use a can of air to blow out dust and gunk from the keyboard every 2-3 months or so. I still have an old IntelliMouse Explorer v1.0, and I can't tell if it's dirty or the finish is just worn down from many years of use. Probably a bit of both.
I occasionally blow dust out of my lappy's fans and exhaust vents, although I really should do that part more often.

I worked with a guy who would clean not only his key board and mouse but also his telephone whenever anyone walked into his cube. Just a bit strange if you ask me.
