Hi all
SCary, my 1st post in this forum.
Does anyone have some .NET classes that can fill a table in database with valid random data up to x records. I wanna do some analyzing on my tables but entering data manually is absurd
Thanks

Perhaps I can still enter this month article competition 2 days... not much to it, I imagine... although 2 finger typing takes it toll on lengthy lines, not to mention paragraphs
Cheers and nite

You call that 1K? I call it 24 short

This would be quite simple to do if you don't have any business constraints on the data.
Can you post the table schema?
Cheers,

What exactly is that? OK, I know what it is, but where/how/what format, etc, can I get it from somewhere or do I have to type it out IOW ?

If you're using SQL, try this little easter egg nugget of functionality:
select the table from the listin enterprise manager (single click)
CTRL-C (copy into clipboard)
CTRL-V into notepad
voila! There's the table definition.
Cool, huh?
Which DB are you using btw?

MSDE , but as you guessed I have installed the client tools from some BackOffice 2000 CD
BTW, being new to this whole SQL thing, do you have a good link or 2? Not on SQL usage, but focusing more on information, like table structure and stored procudure parameter discovery. MS has certainly done a shitload of work in that department regarding VS.NET Just a pity, all them nice classes are marked private

i want to change the appearence of the report so that the details section`direction is horizontal not vertical.
Ex: if the details contains field ID normally it is displayed as
1
2
3
i want it to be : 1 2 3
does anyone here know how can i do this?

If you have Crystal Reports 8, you can do a Multi-Column Details Section. However, I am not sure if this will format exactly how you want.

i am using crystal reports which comes with VS.Net professional.i know how to make multi column section ,it is not difficult but,the problem is formatting the columns and changing the direction.
suppose that i made a program to calculate the result of 3000 students and i want to print it out ,if the student takes 10 subjects then one A4 paper will take only 3 students result around 900 papers.can you imagine this?!
anyway ,thanx for help.

Does Oracle have the equivlant of the SQL Server NewID() function. I'd like to generate a UUID inside a Oracle (9i) stored procedure but can't seem to find a function. Does such a function exist?

No such method I know of exists, but you can create a UUID in your data access layer for new ids, convert it to a string and just pass it into your insert stored procedure or table insert statement.
Alternatively, you could write an external add in to Oracle to do it, and call that from your stored procedure. I've never done it, I've just used the method above

You might want to try and use Oracle Sequence (similar to SQL seeded Identifier)

Not sure if this is a bug in Microsoft.Data.Odbc, but here goes anyway.
I have a table in Sybase 11.9.2, with 2 columns, ID and Description.
I have the following stored procedure,
CREATE PROCEDURE Get
@ID PK_SMALLINT = NULL
Select * from Table
where ( (@ID = NULL) or (ID = @ID) )
The problem is that when i run the stored procedure without passing a Parameter from Dot Net, i only get the column names returned in my result set, yet when i run it from ISQL or similar, i get the complete contents of the table. Has anyone seen this before?
When i pass in an ID value, i get 1 row returned as expected. It looks like there is some problem with or statements of this type, and the odbc data adapter.

Sybase has the most unstable ODBC drivers I've seen so far. Be careful with them.
But what you're seeing is not an ODBC error, this is a common mistake.
This query leads to unpredictable results:
Select * from Table
where ( (@ID = NULL) or (ID = @ID) )
Because of the expression WHERE field = NULL . The right way of doing a comparison with NULL is with the IS NULL expression.
This query always run as expected:
Select * from Table
where ( (@ID IS NULL) or (ID = @ID) )
BTW, I think that maybe what you want is this:
Select * from Table
where ( (ID IS NULL) or (ID = @ID) )
because when @ID is NULL, this condition is true for all rows, so the 1st query will really return all rows

Thanks,
using IS NULL has fixed the problem.

Any idea where to get .NET barcode control and .NET windows forms data repeater? The barcode is to be used for printing item codes. The data repeater is to create Access-like subforms.

Based on my understanding, the only available way to validate entries into windows forms datagrid is through the column changing event. But I find it very limited. Is there any other, robust way that will enable me to trap wrong entries on a per row or column basis? Something as good as validating events of simple controls?

What exactly you want to do?If you don't want to show some value, you can filter dataview(datasource) of your grid.

Ah! Sorry, you got me wrong. It's not showing values that is my problem. I want to validate entries as they are being entered into the datagrid on a per column or per row basis. Right now, the best I know is to trap entries using the dataset column changing event. But this method is not good enough. In particular, the user can still get out of the datagrid inspite of invalid entries if this method were used.

Oh,I got the point now.I can't find the solution too. I'd be so appreciate if you tell me when you find it.

UPDATE Login SET Password='blomma' WHERE User='elev2'
Login is the table, Password and User is columns
So what is wrong?????
