Are you talking about having IIS on the box also ? If so IIS keeps a log file in C:\winnt\system32\logs (I think) . It should have all the information as for as who is accessing the site that your hosting . If your looking for something professional . Webtrends makes a nice product that can gives you a Web interface that shows how many people access your site but might be alittle pricey ....

Hi I would like to know about security in computers, I am using the FAT32 system on my pc, and would like to know if it's possible to save information onto the file allocation table - that isnt relevant to the file system on my hard drive. Also I'd like to know if it is possible to fool the computer into thinking there is a bad sector on the hard drive when infact that sector could contain information that is intact.
Does Anyone know?

does anyone know where the setting is in the registry (NT 4.0) that tells a program to run on startup? i know there's a runonce registry key that tells something to run once, but what about every time?

i want to see services on other computer of the network.for that purpose i have created a program that will show these services.
i also have created a simple network of two
computers.both computers have xp_os installed on it.i have simple run the network card wizered.now i am able to share dives,internet fasilities on other network computer.
i have run this program on other network it will show services of each computers.
but problem is this when i want to see services on other computer i got an access denied error who to remove it.

I'm working on developing an NT/2000/XP service, and occasionally it runs loose. I can't stop it through the Services applet, so I try to kill the process directly. I get an Access Denied error. I've done it on other machines, but for some reason mine fails to kill it, so I have to reboot. It's a PITA when debugging. I have admin level access too - so I should be able to.
Anyone have any ideas?

I don't know if this will help, but I've just recently run into a similar problem while troubleshooting an entirely different issue. A while back I found and downloaded a product called "WhosLocking" that will identify dependent tasks that prevent me from shutting down a service. It's very handy and works great. What I didn't know until this week is that it can also shut down the dependent tasks and release the one you're trying to kill. No more "Access Denied" messages!!! It's freeware, so try Google to locate it.

Hi... dunno if this is a known problem.
My windows 2000 advanced (?!?) server hangs with some message. Let me tell somethig that I noted as peculiar. It hangs when I work with my local site with frames. At some point of time, IE will hang. After that if I close the IE window the windows crashes with the following m,essage...

If it crashes at random parts of the day memory might be the cause ... Any error messsages in the event viewer ?

I'm becoming paranoid - Windows hates me, I think. I'm trying to set up a secure FTP server to allow a few friends to post and download files that are too large to email. I'm on a Win2K Server with IIS 5.0 installed. I created domain user accounts for my friends. I created a directory for their files and gave it NTFS permissions of Full Control for domain users. In Internet Services Manager I mapped the directory as a virtual directory on my default FTP Server, and assigned Read and Write permissions. Anonymous logons are disabled. According to all the documentation I've read, this is all correct, and it should work perfectly.
When I attempt to connect as a domain user, the proper logon dialog appears requesting a user name and password. When I enter an existing domain user name and password, the logon fails! When I use my admin name and password, it works perfectly. WTF??? I've stopped and started the service repeatedly, thinking that might refresh the ACL for the target virtual directory, but that hasn't helped. Can anyone give me some clues on this? How hard can it be? I do have a firewall running - ZAP - but I've assigned FTP Server to the Trusted Zone, and it hasn't complained about access attempts. All IP addresses are enabled, too, for access to this server. I'm lost....

Well, are you trying to access your FTP server from the localhost? I had a very similar problem, that I didn't let me logon when accessing from the localhost, but did work from another machine!

Hehehe... I've actually had relatively few problems with it, but the ones I tumble on to seem to be weird ones that no one else has ever found. I seem to be a pioneer in that way
Although I am currently trying to access it from the local host, I've also tried from remote hosts with identical results. The master user name and password always work, but access is denied to any other user in the domain. I initially followed conventional practice of assigning permissions to the group then adding users to it, but I've also tried granting individual users access permissions. Neither works.
I wonder if I need to set up other services that I haven't touched. When I set this up it was to learn Win2K Server, so I loaded it using all the Microsoft defaults and deferred customizing anything until later. I haven't touched RAS or DHCP or MSMQ, nor any of the other obscure, rarely mentioned services running. Could that be the problem? I suppose I should have known better - I accepted all the Microsoft recommendations for SBS4.5 when I installed it years ago and nothing in it ever worked correctly again. Oh well...

The way I have mine setup is :
1) create a local account on the FTP server .
2) Don't mess with the security on the Directory (I have everyone full control) unless you want to restrict access to some users for certain directories .
They will connect to the FTP root directory with the account you created for them . Then they will be able to access the files .
Of course my setup is not very secure but I wasn't going for security .I just wanted to get something up and running and working of course

That works great for anonymous access, but not for individual users. A logon box is presented, but perfectly valid user/password pairs are rejected! I definitely do not want just anyone to be able to access the server, so enabling anonymous logons isn't an answer either...

I'm not sure yet whether it will help; the error message is different, though the symptoms are similar. It's amazing that the search engine has never offered this one to me though. I've used keywords that match the list, and phrases that are contained in the text.
One curious item I noticed - "It is not recommended that you install an IIS Web Server on a Windows 2000 Domain Controller." What are small businesses who don't need two servers supposed to do? And why does Microsoft continue to ship Small Business Server (which also includes Exchange Server and Proxy Server, all of which are not recommended for installation on the same machine)?
Having followed the instructions given for Windows 2000 (they don't match what actually appears on the screen, so some guessing is involved), I'll have to arrange for some outside tesing. Thanks for the suggestion!

I had a problem with security when running .NET apps on a PDC Win 2K server. I unfortunately setup the server as a PDC and then .NET would work only with user permissions as SYSTEM.

For one you didn't post your error message anywhere that I can see .Another is that I'm pretty sure that the account has to have log on locally priveleges . That is why I said to create a local account on the box for each user and lock it down on the NTFS level for each directory . Thats not anonymous because you need to know the account and password for you to connect .It just won't let anyone connect .

I did all the steps you suggesteed before posting, but none worked. The reference to the article above did the trick, though. Win2K Server doesn't allow local user logons unless a group policy is used to enable it. Once I followed the instructions contained in the article, no further changes were required - all the previous settings were correct. Domain users can now log in, but anonymous users are blocked, just the way I like it.
