Please excuse my jumping in, but what type of OS would you advise? I've been trying to "replace" MS OS's for over 3+ years... and I'm still desperately seeking a system that does not have to be rebuilt simply to boot or properly shut down! My story is too long but I'm with you... IE: W95, 98, 98SE, ME and now XP! Even my ancient Mac 512SE has more up time than any of the previous... I keep it around just to retype and send snail mail when my other (7) MS boxes fail... at least I know it will still power up, print and power down without having to do some type of system file maintenance... I have 8 boxes (none networked) and on any given day, I can't guarantee a flawless session of composing and printing a document for my kid's school assignments... the answer to "where do you want to go today" usually means "crazy" for me...
Anyone care to hear the whole story? I'm new to CP, and looking for serious low level help... Is there a forum for articles like "digital dancing with the devil"? I've dedicated myself to learning C, C++, pearl, Pascal, basic, and/or even (God forbid) assembly, simply to understand and fix the basic errors with (IBM compatible) power on, os boot, application Open, Save, Print and Close... and most importantly "safe" shutdown and power off! I shouldn't have to be a rocket scientist... For God sakes, I'm a DRAM fab engineer whose only real goal in life was to publish a music and video magazine (in color, one flaw of the 512 Mac SE)! 15 years later I’m still trying, and now I'd like to do it over the web... I never thought it would require the study and practical use of a bookshelf full of programming manuals…
Maybe this should have been an article, and maybe this is not the right place to look for collaboration and help on my “PC” issues and website building desires… If not I apologize for my comments (and adding my $.02 worth) in agreement about MS… But I also want to thank CP for making problem code information and advise from professionals like you to the rest of us general public type persons… Nuff said… again, what OS do you suggest?

Hi,
I have Windows 2000 Advanced server. The IRQ conflict page showed the following. I think, this is the reason why my PC hangs with IRQ message.
Anyone has a suggestion for me to get rid of this problem?? Please help

What is the actual message you're seeing? IRQ9 is commonly shared by PCI devices by design, and it's also shared with IRQ2 to cascade two eight-input IRQ controler circuits. It looks like all but the modem are integrated parts of the motherboard, so they are presumably tested and known to work properly even though they share an interrupt line. If you're reasonably certain that this otherwise normal-looking situation is causing a problem, try moving the modem to another slot. That can make a difference in which resources are assigned to the device.

I indirectly fixed (not a solution for the problem) the problem. I dissabled the Norton Internet security that was installed with my server. Now , the PC doesnt hang. Just for the heck of it, I enabled the norton stuff... the PC hanged promptly in 10 minutes.....
The actual error message was.... DRIVER_IRQ_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL....

That is not a problem at all, PCI devices can share IRQs.

Do you mean a BSOD with an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error? That has nothing to do with hardware IRQs, it's usually a buggy driver. The first thing to try is updating the drivers for your hardware.

U r right about the error message. I didnt upgrade my driver... but did something else to fix the problem.
I disabled my NOrton Internet Security Edition... oops... the PC doesnt hang. I confirmed this by enabling the Norton Internet Security and... PC hanged.....
Thanks for ur advice?? Is norton handling the IRQ for anyreason.... and why is it hanging my PC????

Yes: do not replace it. It's a system file and Windows 2k System File Protection won't let you do it.

It needs to be replaced becasue it is corrupted and is causing problems and windows file protection errors keep comin up. Even W2K is having trouble replacing it. Would directx or SP3 replace this file?

Try SP3, or re-installing your current service pack.
If that doesn't work, try running "SFC /scannow".
If that still doesn't work, the version in the dllcache (C:\WinNT\System32\dllcache\) is corrupt. You should be able to replace that version with the correct file, and then run "SFC /scannow" to replace the version in the system directory. Only use this as a last resort - you can really bugger your machine up by doing this!

You need at least a Win2k server to create a domain, otherwise just put the computers in the same workgroup.

From Windows Help:
To add an alias (CNAME) resource record to a zone
Open DNS.
In the console tree, click the applicable forward lookup zone.

On the Action menu, click New Alias.
In the Alias name text box, type the alias name.
In the Fully qualified name for target host text box, type the fully qualified domain name of the DNS host computer for which this alias is to be used.
As an option, you can click Browse to search the DNS namespace for hosts in this domain that have host (A) records already defined.
Click OK to add the new record to the zone.
Note:
To open DNS, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click DNS
Not much help, is it? A CNAME record in DNS creates an alias for the host other than the base name contained in an A record. If this isn't helpful, perhaps a bit more detailed information about what you're trying to accomplish would be in order...

ok I can now send mail from my new exchange 5.5 server but I cannot receive email. I am guessing that I need to have someone send me my mail, set it up like we have to set up the DNS servers. I am trying to do this without reading the documentation as I find it bloated and it takes too long. Is there an easy way to do this, or do I have to bug the guys that set up my DNS? Thanks in advance.

I have a stand-alone home PC running Windows 2000 Professional. I've installed IIS service but it can't start.
I got the next message in Event log:
The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated with the following error:
The authentication service is unknown.
The same error is appeared when I try to start FTP or SMTP service. What's wrong? Please, help me to start IIS service on my home PC!

we have 2 computer network.we made 2 new user on 2 computer with same
name and passwords on both computers.we first kill the simple file
sharing and uncheck the "use simple file sharing" in window explorer.
we succeeded to get right to access the network computer service on
one computer.but other computer was not showing the services of other computer.
we made some changes and then try to access the service.
in doing so break our network connection and now network path is not establishing.please give the bettter way to solve our problem

Hi!
When I try to export my messages in Outlook Express, the process abnormally closes with the message
'An error occured initialising MAPI'.
I am using Windows XP Professional. Previously in NT, this happened and I installed 'Windows Messaging' Setup from Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Update. But in Windows XP, there is no 'Windows Messaging' setup available.
Please suggest me a solution for the abovesaid problem(s)!!!

Any time I try to create a new website, or a new ftp site, the wizard pops up and all goes smoothly until I try to start it. When I attempt to start the new site, I receive the error message "A duplicate name exists on the server." It does not. And there are no clues other than this message. I've searched Technet for this exact message, but there is nothing in the Knowledge Base that matches this phrase, and any looser search returns only totally irrelevant articles. Is there an unmentioned limitation to one website and one ftp site in Win2K Server SP2? There are no duplicate names anywhere on the machine; not sites, folders, or files. Clues would be most welcome...

If there was, I don't think you would be the first person to find it.
I aint ever used 2k server apart from telnetin and pure Ftp.
But is it a duplicate name or a duplicate name space.
Talking about spaces, I hate the idea of using them in names.
I remember this use to screw an old DOS version bad.
