I originally wasn't going to include Eri(c|k)a in the survey but figured that adding her would weed out those who don't really care. I'd be interested to know *why* people voted for the person they did.
My choice: Meg Whitman. eBay have a model that is so simple yet also incredibly powerful. I'd love to find out how they managed to deal with scalability, security, decisions on direction, priority balancing, payments and escrow, insurance, etc etc etc
cheers,
Chris Maunder

Would you say the same if Meg Whitman looked like Erica?
Or, would you ask Erica about scalability, security, decisions on direction, priority balancing, payments, and insurance ?? Nah.

Actually, Michael Dell would be interesting. Dell rapidly became the number one computing vender, on the relatively simple model of selling direct instead of going through the retail channels. That seems like something that could have easily flopped, but it ended up working quite well.

Badly. Did you use ebay early on ?

Exactly! They've made the mistakes and learned from them.

I guess I'd just hate you to talk to her because their model is one of no customer service, no contact with users except to annoy, attack or sue them.

But that IMO is part of the brilliance. EBay is just this virtual space provided with no strings attached. People, you, me, Chris, Bob Marley, etc. then come in and form what EBay is. We generate the community, we enforce and percolate the rules. If EBay admin interfered all the time then a lot of that emergent behavouir would not, well, emerge.

But they DO interfere.
Example 1: I was selling legitimate Microsoft software. Microsoft claimed otherwise, with no proof ( how could they have proof ) and all my auctions where closed and the bidders emailed to say I was a pirate. I was given no chance to defend myself. They said they would reinstate my auctions after Microsoft agreed that my auctions were legal. I wrote to the Microsoft address provided, they did not reply.
Example 2: A guy posted a lot of auctions for DVD's, and it soon became clear that he did so solely to generate a lot of sales and keep the money. I posted in the forums to warn people and was told off by ebay staff.
Example 3: ebay is rife with pirated DVD's. I have tried to bring some of these auctions to ebay's attention, they wrote back and told me to pull my head in.

Steve Jobs CEO, Apple. That man, and that company, is about quality and dedication to simple principles. There is a reason why Apple fans are such fans. Most of us Microsoft users are rather pathetic in our view of MS (as shown by another post here saying he only uses MS because he has to) and would jump ship the moment something more economically viable came along (not everyone of course, but a lot of us.)
I want to know how uncompromising quality can be turned into a profitable company.
And lets face it, Apple design rocks and Steve Jobs must be fostering that.
From a web dev point of view though I would like to have dinner with Jefrey Zeldman of Zeldman.com fame.

well, I was voting for Craig Barrett, and not because I work for him, but because Intel is doing things in the most interesting direction (IMHO) in the field today - Clustering for HPC. the Hyper-Threading idea is one way in that direction, and Intel getting 50+ places in the Top 500 super computers is another, and I wanted to hear his opinion on what will be next.

It depends on what dinner mean to you; a business opportunity or a bit of fun.
I go in for fun and will prefer a lady to brighten my day/night with beautiful smile.
