For that reason, I need to know how to perform some operations by another application on server.

2. The (not so) hard way: use a COM component.

I intend to use COM as a resolution but I wonder if we can use that COM to invoke an Automation such as Excel Automation inside its code ?
I have had problems in invoking Excel Automation directly inside ASP page.
Help me if you can !!!

as long as excel is installed on the server which will run the COM component, then you shouldn't have any trouble automating excel.
if you need any samples then let me know and i'll give you some simple demos.

I want to count the number of records.... and display it in my web-page using my ASp page. I know that the "Select count(*) from table" will give the count in the database - MS Access.
How can I retrive the 'result' from that query and pass it on to my ASP page??

Take the value of the first field from returned recordset, like this:
rs.Open "SELECT Count(*) FROM Table", con
intCount = CLng(rs(0))
,assuming that "rs" is an ADO recordset and "con" is ADO Connection

You could also give an alias to the item you are returning (along with just about anything in your query), for example:
SELECT COUNT(*) AS THECOUNT FROM TABLE
Then you could do:
Dim count : count = rs("THECOUNT")
Just another option ...

Hi everyone,
I cannot find answer to the mentioned problem. I created an inform band, but like to prove the user with less mysterious way to show the band than seeking 'View/Toolbar' or 'View/Explorer band' (sorry for mistakes - menu names translated from polish IE version). So I added the toolbar button and it works perfectly (btw: does anybody know how to reset the IE toolbar, so the new placed button will always be visible?). Me current goal is to place menu item in 'Tools' menu. Everything works fine, till I tried to show the band. Following the MSDN - seems that only toolbar button can show band (lack of 'BandCLSID' in menu item registration). As a workaround I implemented IOleCommandTarget, but I don't know how to simulate pressing of button, that will show my band.
Any help will be appreciated.

I'd look for "Beginning Active Server Pages 3.0" from Wrox Press. Most of the examples use VBScript, unfortunately, but then so does most of MSDN. It's a great introduction, and goes well beyond the usual Beginner level in content. It also happens to be very well written, unusual for programming books.

Hello,
I am taking a Fundamentals of JAVA from CISCO. The course is designed such that at the end of the course students are to submit a project called "JBank" code.
Is there anyone who took this course and has a working JBank codes? I am having some trouble writing it. I seem to be the type of a person who is good at twicking/modifying the existing codes.
I would really appreciate the help.

I am currently running on a server that does not support ASP. What are my programming options if i want to do form extraction, eg. user registration, things of that sort without ASP. I am really lost with all the different cgi, php and everything else that is out there. I can't seem to understand if they all do the same thing just in a different language (like basic and c++) or they are for different uses. That's why I think that I need to get my hands on some books that explain these things more in detail. For now though, in your opinion which would be the best language (easy and versatile) to have access to forms, hit counters, search engines, etc. Otherwise, can someone tell me some affordable servers around $8/month or so which support ASP? Thanks.

Although ASP makes form handling simple, it isn't necessary. Javascript is one good tool for writing client side scripts to create and send form data, and for composing server scripts for extracting the information. One decent hosting service that supports ASP is Readyhosting.com[^]. At $99/ year they're quite affordable, and the services they provide are very good, including 500MB space, unlimited email addresses, unmetered data transfer, and unlimited databases. After you host you first site, all future sites are 1/2 price though you can bill your customers full rate. Also, if you use them to register a domain for a customer they renew it at no charge for as long as the site is hosted with them.

All server-side scripting methods do the same thing in different languages. All of them make the form data available, but the syntax is different.

Check out www.ucvhost.com[^]. You can get a domain for USD$10 and then basic ASP hosting for USD$1/month with unlimited pop3 etc.
I've had a reasonable experience but make sure you double check some things like your DNS setup (www.dnsreport.com). They're a bit scabby in some areas but you've just got to tell them and they'll fix it.

Thanks for the link, that looks like a pretty good deal, especially the unlimited bandwith. I wish they had a little more web space even though I am currently using less than 1 MB at the host I am with now. I will give it some serious thought. How is the server speed like? Could you post a link to your site so I could check it out?

How come the "Copy Project" option in VS.NET is always disabled whenever I need to transfer a finished web service on my local computer to my remote web host's server? (I was always able to use this method to tranfer my ASP.NET projects).
Therefore, I had to copy the files manually via FTP. The files I copied were:
1) myService.asmx
2) myService.vsdisco
3) global.asax
4) web.config
5) bin folder which contains: myService.dll
All these files and the "bin" folder were copied to a folder called MyServiceFolder located at the root of my website's directory structure. But whenever I try to access the service (http://www.mysite.com/MyServiceFolder/myService.asmx) it fails. And it will not display the specific error because it could not locate the web.config (where <customerrors="off">).
However, when I move the web.config file out of the MyServiceFolder and into the parent folder, and tried it again, it was able to tell me the specific error: "Parser Error Message: Could not create type 'MyNamespace.MyClass'." But this means that my web service is still not working.
After some more trial and error, I was able to access my web service. What I did was that I also moved the "bin" folder out of the "MyServicefolder" and into the parent folder (where web.config is sitting). This made everything to work.
The location of my files on the server now looks like this (which is kinda too messy):
1) /web.config
2) /bin/myService.dll
3) /MyServiceFolder/myService.asmx
3) /MyServiceFolder/myService.vsdisco
4) /MyServiceFolder/global.asax
But the point is that I want to be able to organize all of my projects (web service, asp.net apps, etc) into their own folders on the server. So my big question is how can I put this web service into one folder such as MyServiceFolder, and make it work?
Is there some configuration/setup file where I can edit the path directories?
My other big question is how come I cannot use the "Copy Project" option to transfer web services to a remote server?
