When you select "Site Bugs and Suggestions", it is the "Questions & Answers" menu group that is highlighted, not the "Help!" group in which the forum is currently placed...

Yes, because the Bugs and Suggestions forum is, well, a forum, and all forums will make the QA / Forum menu be highlighted. I could hack it to not do this but...

I was thinking that some people do not read the FAQ to find out about the lang attribute when use he code blocks, so how about creating a popup (similar to the member popup, the one with all the 'My stuff'), with all the supported languages listed.
It would also save you from having to manually edit the lang attrib.

Basically yes, either a drop down selector or on mouse over it gives you the popup with the list of valid languages to select from.
Whatever is easiest and most intuitive to the end user.

That is not sufficient. I trust a lot of people simply type their PRE tags (or paste the lot) without using the code block widget.
Here is my suggestion:
1. automatically add a lang="someLanguage" to every PRE tag that does not have one, as soon as preview or publish buttons are clicked;
2. choose an intelligent default language; it would take into account the name of the forum, the tags of the article or Q&A, maybe even a user setting; and it would default to "text" when undecided.
3. it would be shown as the selected value in a ComboBox, next to the code block widget, not instead of it.
4. changing the ComboBox selection would not alter existing lang attributes, it would only influence new ones added automatically as described in #1.

This article:
3D Software Rendering Engine - Part I[^]
has just won an award for C++ articles. Upon reading it, the quality of the figures didn't jive with the brevity of the writing, so I did a quick check. Many of the figures are directly copied from the text he mentions near the beginning of his article: "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" By André LaMothe, published by SAMS.
Here's one example.[^] (I can't link to the exact page, scroll down a couple of pages to see the ones I noticed).
I can't find a "Report article" button anymore, so I'm posting this here.

Can we please stop the re-numbering of answers in Q&A? It gets very confusing when referring to a "previous answer", which then becomes no longer previous, and you have to look at date/time stamps to figure out what the hell is being discussed.
For that matter, IMHO, having the two tabs "Top Rated" and "Most Recent" is unnecessary and further pollutes the UI.
I don't see it as much of an inconvenience to scroll through the answers - there usually aren't that many. Let's just have a simple list, no re-numbering, oldest first. I think we'll be able to cope with that.

Not so sure: the current listing puts the highest scored at the top. So the most-likely-to-be-right answer should be the first one people see.
I know what you mean though, I generally refer to other answers by the posters name to avoid that confusion.

if referring by number is not recommended, then IMO the answers shouldn't be numbered at all.
referring by author name is not the ultimate solution though, there could be several answers by one member.
So I'm with Hans: chronological, no reordering. And if you must, as soon as it becomes relevant, just provide a hyperlink above the first answer, that brings you to the best so far.

I agree with you Griff. The way it works now is the best way!
But if Luc's suggestion could be implemented and the numbering removed, that would discourage people from referring to the posts by number. They would probably still write "the post above" and such like, but that can't be helped.

I'm not sure it's the best way, but I don't think the order based on time of original post is a good solution either.
I like the idea for the "best" solution at the top: people who are looking for a solution to that problem can find it the most easily, rather than just assuming the first solution is the one to go for.
Referring to an absolute address - "SAKryukov's post" - rather than a relative "above" or "number 2" works for me...

I just voted Solution 2 a five. This means it is now top-rated, and at the top of the list on the Top Rated tab. OK so far. If you look at the Most Recent tab, Solution 2 is also at the top of that list. This makes sense, OK? Now, the issue is, there's no way to view the Solutions in ascending numerical order.
There are two ways to fix this:
1. Throw up another tab (I think the term "throw up" will give you a hint about what I think of this).
2. Get rid of both tabs; just show one list, with a Sort by: combobox at top; the entries will be:
Top Rated
Oldest First
Latest First
[This setting should be persisted; I think one setting for all Q&A forums is enough; YMMV .]
Problem solved, much less clutter.

The issue is that we cache the values at different times. Once a day for the monthly, once an hour for daily. Things can get weird at the beginning of the month so I'll adjust.

I know I often come here to bitch & moan, but I just wanted to thank you for the effort that went into dumpster-diving for the download counts.
In particular I appreciate the 5 points being credited for each download. I've often thought that while it is the forums that give us a sense of community, it is the articles that continually draw in new members. So I think that 5 points is a fair and well-deserved reward, given the time and care it takes to write a good article.

They might be premature, though, because 5 points a download is leading to some excessive points and will be reduced to 1 points a download. Sorry.
