Ah, the joy of debugging JavaScript. First, are you sure that the error you are getting is due to the JS file not being included into you page? (i.e. the object that you are trying to create is within the JS file)
If your answer is yes to the above question then we need to look at how the file is being referenced. My first instinct is that for some reason it did not like traversing up a level in the file structure with the use of the ".." however, after testing it locally here on my machine that should not be the case.
The file that you are trying to include should be accessible as long as it is accessible to the web (for example, can you open or download the JS file from your web browser?).
If you could, please give a scenario of your file structure to help solve this issue. And, if possible, a URL (if publicly accessible).

I've now solved the problem. I had placed my file in a directory called "scripts" and ASP (or IIS) didn't like that!

Hi, i have this html file (it's bug free) which i subsequently renamed to an asp file. NO change to the content - just renaming the file extension from html to asp. But IIS failed to display the asp file. The clue it offers is too general - "HTTP Internal Server Error 500"
I am pretty clueless since the html file loaded WITHOUT a problem.
Anyway, here's the code, I hope someone can point me to the right direction:
<SCRIPT TYPE="text/javascript">
var rollOverArr=new Array();
function setrollover(OverImgSrc,pageImageName)
{
if (! document.images)return;
if (pageImageName == null)
pageImageName = document.images[document.images.length-1].name;
rollOverArr[pageImageName]=new Object;
rollOverArr[pageImageName].overImg = new Image;
rollOverArr[pageImageName].overImg.src=OverImgSrc;
}
function rollover(pageImageName)
{
if (! document.images)return;
if (! rollOverArr[pageImageName])return;
if (! rollOverArr[pageImageName].outImg)
{
rollOverArr[pageImageName].outImg = new Image;
rollOverArr[pageImageName].outImg.src = document.images[pageImageName].src;
}
document.images[pageImageName].src=rollOverArr[pageImageName].overImg.src;
}
function rollout(pageImageName)
{
if (! document.images)return;
if (! rollOverArr[pageImageName])return;
document.images[pageImageName].src=rollOverArr[pageImageName].outImg.src;
}
//-->

First thing to do: In IE, go to Tools->Internet Options, click the Advanced tab and uncheck "Show friendly HTTP error messages".
Try it again and you should get an error message that gives you a better clue.
Friendly error messages are not friendly to developers.

Hey Norm,
The errors were pretty much unclosed tags.
All the comments were open, ( like this <!-- comment ) so I closed those (<!-- comment -->), placed the Javascript code between the <HEAD> tags and closed the <IMG SRC> tags that were not closed correctlly (<img src="x" width=x hieght=x)

hi, i'm just wondering if anyone has spent time on message boards that assumes a tree/hierachical structure - example: code project.
u can have a table of "threads". But each thread can have "child" threads and "child" threads can, in turn, have a whole bunch of child threads.
I know u can use a tree control (by the way, any suggestion?), but how can you store tree/hierachical data in a SQL server (relational database)? What's the best way to store hierachical data in this application?
Let me venture a guess... encode the structure in a char field. Say...
msgID="12-3-5"
parsing the msgID field:
(a) thread 12
(b) level one msg 3
(c) level two msg 5
Then, you'll need to build a parser. Parse, then load the data into the right place in a tree control... so clumsy... any suggestion?
Thanks!

Don't use a thread table. Have a message table which includes a "parent message" field and a datestamp. If the message is a root message then its parent is null / zero.
ie.
Message 1: Parent 0
...Message 2: Parent 1
......Message 5: Parent 2
...Message 4: Parent 1
Message 3: Parent 0
...Message 7: Parent 3
Message 6: Parent 0
Then you can use an iteration to get all the child messages in date/time sequence, starting with the root messages. The only complication is that the root messages need to be latest first and the lower levels need to be latest last.

thanks for the feedback first of all. I read it last nite, and keep thinking about this thru the day.
I think what you proposed will work - theoretically. Here's what you proposed:
<msg>
<msgid>ASF24234SF34
<msgtitle>Message Title
<msgbody>Message Body
<parentid>ZKRM35AS4SF3
But... to reform the hierachical structure, you need to search for parent for all child message! This sounds like an exponential problem is this not? How do they do it in a real forum message board?
Hope to hear from you soon.

Only if you don't put an index on the ParentID field. Indexed properly the entire thing should be almost as fast as getting all the messages for a thread and sequencing them manually, maybe slightly quicker.
Either way, in something like Access, you're going to start having problems at around 2000-3000 messages. In SQL Server/MSDE, it should go on fine for a long time.

What is a "real" forum message board? I've had message boards work fine this way, using ASP. I'm sure you'll find that each message board works slightly differently from another.

I have started implementing it. I think you are right. Loading the tree control with only a subset of the forum - msg belong to the same thread - should not be a problem at all.
By the way, I used SQL server NewID() function to add "uniqueidentifier" for MsgID column - Do you think it's a wise decision?
THanks.

Hi,
I am using CDONTS to allow customers to send web mail. How do you get the message body to recognise new lines when the user types "Enter."
For example, suppose the user writes the following:
Hello,
I'm interested in booking a villa for two weeks in April. Do you have any vacancies?
Regards,
Kevin McFarlane
When this is sent using CDONTS it is received looking like this:
Hello, I'm interested in booking a villa for two weeks in April. Do you have any vacancies? Regards, Kevin McFarlane
My code looks like this:
Set oMail = Server.CreateObject("CDONTS.NewMail")
.
.
.
oMail.Body = bodytext
oMail.MailFormat = CdoMailFormatMime
oMail.BodyFormat = CdoBodyFormatHTML
.
.
where bodytext =
"Hello, I'm interested in booking a villa for two weeks in April. Do you have any vacancies? Regards, Kevin McFarlane"
Kevin
|
|
|
|
|
I don't remember exactly how to do it, but I think it involves replacing Carriage Return\Newline pairs with "<br>" tags.
Try this before assigning the body text to the CDONTS object:
...
bodytext = Replace(bodytext, vbCrLf, vbCr)
bodytext = Replace(bodytext, vbLf, vbCr)
bodytext = Replace(bodytext, vbCr, "<br>")
...
I think this will only work for HTML emails. I haven't tested it.

trying to send an email using CDONTS on entry to a page, by using the Window_Onload() Sub routine...
The page is initiated by another page with a form "submit" button... I get the following error when the page attempts to open:
Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions' Smart HTML interpreter on this non-HTML page: "http://stage/email_con.html"
Basically, all this page does is thank the user for contacting me and allows them to click a "close window" button, which does a window.close()
Here's the code for the sub:
<%
Sub Window_OnLoad()
Dim objMail
Set objMail = CreateObject("CDONTS.Newmail")
objMail.TO = "vlusardi@sdcera.org"
objmail.Subject = "HTML EMAIL!"
objMail.MailFormat = cdoMailFormatMime
objMail.BodyFormat = cdoBodyFormatHTML
objMail.Body = "this is a test"
objMail.send
set objMail = Nothing
alert("mail sent")
End Sub
%>
can someone tell me how to correct the error message?..... thanks very much...

Is this code in email_con.html? Is your server configured to run ASP code from files with *.html extensions?

jon,
thanks for the reply... not sure if it's configured for that or not, but it runs javascript just fine so I'm assuming it will run vbscript as well... is this an incorrect assumption...??? so to answer you question, yes, it's in the email_con.html file... thanks for any input
|
|
|
|
|
Normally .html files are static with regards to server-side processing. You are right, JavaScript does execute in .html files, but it executes on the client side (unless you explicitly specify for it to run on the server). VBScript will run on the client side, but only in Internet Explorer. For ASP processing, you want the script to execute on the server side.
Try renaming the file to email_con.asp and run it again. This tells the Web server that your file potentially contains ASP code that it needs to execute.
This page[^] will give you an introduction to ASP programming. I haven't read any of the material, but it should clarify server-side vs. client-side if you have any further questions. Or ask me, and I'll try to answer them.

jon,
thanks again for the reply... I renamed the file to a .asp extension and got the exact same error message... could there be a server configuration issue, or is there something I'm missing in my code....???
thanks again...
|
|
|
|
|
I've tried both methods, <% and , and it produces the same error message...
Cannot run the FrontPage Server Extensions' Smart HTML interpreter on this non-HTML page: "http://stage/email_con.asp"
thanks for any help

Nope, I'm stumped. I never use the FrontPage extensions. Anyone else use them?
It does sound like a configuration issue, but I don't know what it could be.
