Hi everyone,
I am totally unfamiliar with windows programming, and I need to write a simple program for my boss. I have written all of the meat of the program so that it runs as a console app. I need help converting it into a windows app.
** The part I need help with is:
- use a menu
- choose a file option called "parse"
- have that pop up a dialog box that allows you to browse for files and then choose multiple files.
- then when you click ok, it parses all of the chosen files with the code I have already written.
Please help!!!
Thanks,

It will probably be easier for you to create a new project using MFC AppWizard and then cut-and-paste your file parsing functionality into that rather than trying to wrap your console app. in windows.
Depending on what type of output is expected you could simplify life even further by using a "Dialog based" app. If you want some kind of report generated and visible on screen you should use a document/view app. If your output can be presented as few numerical or string values or a simple list of values then it would probably be simlper to use a dialog based app.
Do you use Visual C++ 6.0?

hi everyone,
i'm doing my final year programming project. i was hoping to get opinions on methods/designs for my system. the system im creating is a new version of an existing system. my supervisor wants me to create a system that is flexible enough to accept certain codes from the previous system. import the code into the new system and be able to run without much changes or without any changes. any ideas? im using ASP (VBscript) and SQL. the old system is also using ASP(VBscript).

I need to save a web document in MHTML format (just like IE does: Save As Web Archive) and looking for component (Win95/98/NT4) that can do that. Something like CDO.Message from CDO for Win2K. I'd appreciate any info or idea.
Thanks

The ClipCursor function confines the cursor to a rectangular area on the screen. If a subsequent cursor position (set by the SetCursorPos function or the mouse) lies outside the rectangle, the system automatically adjusts the position to keep the cursor inside the rectangular area.
BOOL ClipCursor(
CONST RECT *lpRect // pointer to structure with rectangle
);
RECT r;
POINT p;
GetClientRect(hWnd,&r);
p.x=r.left;
p.y=r.top;
ClientToScreen(&p);
UINT w=r.right-r.left;
UINT h=r.bottom-r.top;
r.left=p.x;
r.top=p.y;
r.right=r.left+w;
r.bottom=r.top+h;
why am i doing this !?
if you capture the mouse inside a window and you right click the title bar it gets free ! this way it doesn`t !
Make sure to make your window system modal ! because if you loose control of the locked mouse RESET helps you brother !

Does anyone know of a program, or piece of source code that can display the types of resources allocated by a program and how much memory each of those resources is taking up?
The reason I need this is that my program consumes 20% of the system/user resources and by single stepping the code I can only narrow the problem down to a property sheet. I still have 5 or more property sheets to add to the program!!.

This sounds like GDI/User leak. I'd use a diagnostic tool like BoundsChecker or Purify.

It is not a leak as such. The resources are released when the application terminates. However the application does use excessive system/user resources (20% each), whilst only using a modest amount of GDI resources (2%). I was just interested in tracking down what was consuming these resources.

To C++ - Gurus from a Java - developer
If you want to check if a file is currently opened by another application, you can't do it by using
'GetFileInformationByHandle' because there is no field like 'isCurrentlyOpened', right?
For my purpose 'last access' and 'last modified' don' t work, of course.
So, how can you monitor if a file is opened by any other app.? Is it just impossible with the use
of documented functions for win32?
Does anybody have a code-snippet or a hint?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Simply open the file with a flag to deny all access to the file. If the file is opened the call will fail. Note that this won't tell you which program is using the file, only if it is being used.

Very good hint!
thanks again

Excuse me, but maybe i didn 't ask in a clear enough way:
let' s say file 'a' is already opened by (any other) application 'Z'.
then
HANDLE hFile = CreateFile(
a, //path to 'a'
GENERIC_READ | GENERIC_WRITE,
0, //dwShareMode
NULL,
OPEN_EXISTING,
FILE_ATTRIBUTE_NORMAL,
NULL);
as part of my program creating the handle
does not fail (hFile is not equal INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE)!
Just as the dcocumentation says: if dwShareMode is 0 the subsequent(!) calls to open 'Z'
will fail.
So, did i get you wrong?
Or should i translate your suggestion in another way into code?

hmmm
I SEEM to remember that every object created by a process is assigned the process'es SID information...right??
could you then not grab the ProcessID from the SID and find out which application is using that pid??
Or am I WAAAAAAAAY out here???

I hit faked him with my win32 API .chm and the peabrain goes for it. I follow it up with a salvo of left's and right's sending him down hard. It's lunch time and he's getting a Champ Sandwhich Special. I said, How's that Mr. VB?! Is that 'I wanna use COM in that Server enough for you?!'
...Ever since then, I've been the Champ.

Hi,
I was looking through the Platform SDK fro Whistler Beta 2, and tried to find any information on how I would get my applications "skinned" like the rest of the programs in Windows XP.
No, they're not all skinned. All window borders are skinned - but not buttons.
I found a good example to confuse me - calc.exe.
Checking with Depends(Part of the PlatformSDK and VisualC++), it had no references to UXTheme.dll. What? Yeah - well in the sdk, they try to convince me of overriding paint functions for all my controls, and calling a DrawThemeBackground() with a lot of paramters telling it what I want to draw. DrawThemeBackground() is part of UXTheme.dll which is the whole system of drawing custom UI's. comctl32.dll uses it. Well somehow calc.exe is telling UXTheme.dll to draw all it's buttons. But I just don't know how.
I'm not go and custom paint all my controls.

By default, apps use the v5 common controls, which don't get themed controls. You need to tell the OS to use the v6 controls for your app, which involves putting a manifest (an XML file with a particular format) as a resource in your binary.
Here's an MSDN article that lists the exact steps to take.
