The trouble is there are so many regulars!
I knocked up a answers database app which stored my "regular" responses to save me typing them in over and over again, and it runs to three pages!

Some of them are boilerplate:
Use the "Improve question" widget
Never post your email address in any forum
But others go into more detail:
We don't do homework
Do not install SQL Server as part of your installation
And so forth - I don't like to type the same meanings over and over, but it would take some serious neural network to work out what response to give automatically.

I think you miss understand me, I am not suggesting you attempt to reply in any way to the question a member wishes to ask. I am suggesting merely blocking them asking the question at all, just like if they tried to ask a blank question.

No, I didn't think you did - but you still need to put some pretty sophisticated intelligence behind the question analysis - or you will p*ss off those newbies who are asking a serious question and get diverted into a simple auto response which is irrelevant to them.

Training someone who simply doesn't care won't help. The most valuable thing that the community can do is provide a place where the majority of visible questions are worthy of being an example.
1. If you post a question, phrase it intelligently
2. If you see a poorly question that has value, edit and rephrase
3. If you see a question that shows a disregard for the community, report it to close it

It might be worth having the following:
As the user types into the question title field a search is automatically performed using the contents of that field as keywords, a box is then displayed directly below the title field saying something along the lines of:
"The following questions/articles already exist and might answer your question, please take a look before posting a question that might be a duplicate"
That way you are essentially forcing people to do a quick search before posting a question

The text window is sometimes losing the carret, and sometimes it is not even possible to write into it. It seems that others are sometimes affected too[^]. Unfortunately, I have no idea of the scenario that leads it to fail...

Yep, FF6.0, sorry that I did not mention it. I use CPHog @ work, but experienced the problem with and without it (FF in both cases).

About pasting, now that you mention it, it could very well be ( was trying to paste a link, AFAIR).

I was just trying to paste a link in a message and it didn't work like it used to (I blame that horrible abomination that is preview  ).
Anyway, I copied a URL to the clipboard, selected a word in my message ("documentation"), and used Ctrl-V to paste. In the past, this worked, putting the link around the selected text. But this time, it didn't. I tried several times. At first it simply pasted the link at the bottom of the message, then it replaced the selected text with the link -- so after several attempts I replaced the text back inside the link.
I very strongly urge you to remove the preview thingy; most of the time it isn't even viewable anyway. It's just plain pointless and troublesome to boot.
Many sites have a "preview" button, and I never click it.

First the good news...
Things seem less jumpy in general, including on fairly long posts, and when editing within the post (as opposed to at the end).  Only time (and making actual responses) will tell.
I also just tried pasting some text in place of some selected text and it worked. (But I think Ctrl-Z to undo may be broken again. Win7, IE8)
However, it still only pasted a link at the bottom, rather than around the selected text. Which I guess is more predictable.
If I type "See this article for more information.", select the "this", then use Ctrl-V to paste (having previously used Ctrl-C to copy the URL), the "this" used to become a link to the article. That is no longer working, but of course I can edit it for the same effect.

IE8 is still behaving badly on the paste stuff, but I think I've narroed down it's issue (sorry, one of its issues). Unfortunately I'm travelling for the next week so it's going to be difficult to get a chance to dig in properly.

On a real tablet (as opposed to the pocket sized placebo) the voting stuff is located where it should, and all is fine, provided one is logged in of course. Using Mobile Safari...
