After discovering that the \scripts folder has magically disappeared from IIS, and noting that nothing works anymore, I backed up the web configuration and data files, then followed the MS instructions for removing and reinstalling IIS. Big mistake!
Using the same Win2K Server CD I installed from a year ago on this then-new machine, many of the critical files (including iis.msc) were not found, and all of the smpt and nntp files are missing from the CD. It is undamaged, not a scratch on it, and it installed perfectly without a hitch the first time.
After reinstalling, skipping the missing files, I recreated the iis.msc file from mmc.exe and saved it. The entire structure is there, including the formerly absent \scripts folder, but now the asp pages I was developing no longer work. All the FrontPage Extensions were also missing from the CD, so I downloaded the newer FrontPage2002 files and installed them. It now tells me that I lack permissions to use the extensions, even though I'm logged on as the Admin for the system.
I'm guessing that I'm going to have to reinstall Win2K completely, along with the IIS component, to restore normal operation, but I have so much installed on top of it that I doubt I can recover all of it. In the past, previous versions of Windows have been very good about preserving installed drivers, data files, and most programs. Has anyone reinstalled Windows2K Server? How did it go, and what kinds of things did you lose?

Glad to know someone else is having IIS issues today
I've never done a reinstall of a server over an existing installation. They simply never seem to work for me. It's a clean install or nothing for me.
cheers,

You, too? Still?
I've been wanting to try a RAID5 array for a while, so maybe I'll go grab three extra drives and install them - give Win2K RAID management a workout and see what happens. At least then I should have plenty of space to back things up!

Anyone get this working? My machine works perfectly as a server on it's own but as soon as NLB is turned on it ceases to be able to see the outside world. Everything's been double checked, all settings are the same as other machines in the cluster, yet the 2003 box just doesn't want to get along.
Anyone else seen this?
cheers,
Chris Maunder

I'm not sure if they is the right place to ask this but I couldn't find a better catagory.
I have a custom driver that I can install with the Hardware wizard no problem. I want to be able to install the driver from an installer though. If you right click on a *.inf file you will see Install in the submenu. In the installer I can call external functions so I call rundll32.exe with InstallHinfSection ... it is the same as the right click Install. The problem is this does not seem to add the driver to the device manager (though it does copy my files to the system32\driver folder).
I have spend a day reading MSDN and I'm no closer to figuring this out. Can anyone help me? Or point me to a site that has forums related to windows drivers?
Thanks

I am trying to write a device install program to get around the problem of xp sp1 installing a driver that i do not wish to use. The ftdi usb-serial device has an approved driver in sp1 that is installed when the device is plugged in.
In order to install the device you must cancel the driver request from windows, go to device manager, and manually update the driver xp installed.
I have played with SetupCopyOEMInf(), UpdateDriverForPlugAndPlayDevices() and calling "rundll32 SETUPAPI.DLL,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\temp\drivers\ftd2xx.inf" with no real success.
Is there any way to automate the manual install process?
Cheers,
Dave

I have been noticing that after opening PDF files in the browser, then closing the browser window, I can't open any more PDF files until I kill the acroread32.exe process from task manager. It does not seem to be exiting correctly when the browser window dies.
Anyone else?
Any ideas as to why?

Here's my issue:
(note: this is x-posted in Visual C++)
I'm calling an instance of IE from an NT service. If the
currently logged-on user is using a proxy server in their
profile, this setting is never seen by the instance of
the browser tht I just spawned. Starting the browser as
the correct user doesnt help either.
So, my question is: Does anyone know of a way to make
Internet Explorer read the correct user profile when I'm
spawning it? Or is everyone that uses a proxy setting
screwed if they run my software?
Thanks...

I'm trying to use SMTP mail to send email from an application. Virtual SMTP server on win2k. Code works fine but the messages are left in the C:\Inetpub\mailroot\Queue folder. I have added localhost to the SMTP server settings (connection and relay).
I assume that I have to connect the virtual SMTP to another SMTP, but I’m not sure how to do this.
Any ideas (or flames for being me stupid)

Hi
we've noticed that our old 16 bit apps here at work eat up (or report to) all the available CPU even though they might not be doin a heck of a lot of processing.
Now rewriting the app is unfortunately out of the question
and i was wondering if there was a way to "tell" windows that this 16 bit app is only allowed X amount of CPY MHz (say 100Mhz) or whether there was a plugin, some sort of container or something that these apps could be set to run in (and still let them access the com ports, modem and net connection of course )
does anyone have any ideas of how to control these naughty 16 bit apps?
regards
bryce

The only suggestion that I'd have is to lower the CPU priority in the Task Manager on the process.

What speed are the CPU(s)? There is a bug in NTVDM in CPUs >= 2Ghz. Microsoft have a patch but you need to request it from them OR if you want I can send it to you.

Using Win2000
I'm francophone, when I email and use boards and other discussion, I use the canadian french keyboard; when I program, I use the US english layout.
Is there a way to automatically tell Win2k to start outlook and explorer using the french keyboard layout ? and start VisualStudio using the US layout ?
Also, Is there a way to copy the content of a "window explorer" window and paste it as text in a file, to get a listing of the files ? this has been bothering me for some time.
Thanks.
Max.

Hi,
<br />
Dim intResponse<br />
intResponse = MsgBox(Dir("C:\*.*"), vbOKCancel)<br />
<br />
If intResponse = 2 Then Exit Sub<br />
<br />
Do<br />
i = MsgBox(Dir, vbOKCancel)<br />
If i = 2 Then Exit Do<br />
Loop<br />
This is a bit rough and ready, but you can easily customize it to not display the files in a msgbox but to write them to a file with
Open "file.fil" For Append as #1
You will also have to manually change the path, but you can easily make a front end around this. Hope it helps.
Paul

Hi, all.
I rencently upgraded from windos Me to XP, with no apparent problems. I did this because I was having problems installing a printer using usb ports. The printer now works great, but the game Age of Empires, that used to work fine, doesn't work anymore! However, this game is fully compatible with Windows XP, right?
I've unistalled it and installed it again, several times. No change. It gives me the typical XP error that says that 'something' has gone wrong and it offers me the possiblity to report the error. Whne I go to details I get a big txt file, which I haven't been able to really understand.
Can anybody help me, please?

I need my application to stop a USB device, so I do not get the windows 'Unsafe Removal' message when the device is disconnected. Anyone know how to do this ?

Not sure how it can be done from an appln, but if u writing the driver for your USB device, and in the IRP_MN_QUERY_CAPABILITIES handler, if u set the following flag,
stack->Parameters.DeviceCapabilities.Capabilities->SurpriseRemovalOK = TRUE;
U will not get the Unsafe removal dialog..

Hey there all!
I'm having a problem installing Mandrake 8.2 on a 486. (yeah okay, that's slow )
It allows me to select language, mouse, do all partitioning, etc, until it gets to the part where you must select packages. It says "Searching for packages..." or the equivalent, then after a while gives this error message:
"An error occurred. <br />
depslist.ordered mismatch against hdlist files."
Any ideas? This means nothing to me.
Thanks,
Paul
