Remember that incredibly annoying "Ring around the collar" commercial.... Wait, of course you don't. You weren't around in the 70s . I will never buy Wisk.

For most things, there will be a company [or two] that are good and who i've had decent experiences with in the past and I will always go back to them to at least look. For instance, I will shortly be getting a new laptop and the standard will be set at what Toshiba have and a machine must be a whole lot better to make me swap as I have had nowt but joy from my Toshes.

There are only two ways off the list:
1) A real apology from the company
or 2) A correction of the defect that caused the company to go on the list
I have only, ever, taken one place off the boycott list.
Otherwise I am a pragmatic consumer. However, if a certain place is good and safe, why not use them. All things being equal I prefer Amazon to a smaller website and I prefer NewEgg for tech stuff. Doesn't mean that I will not order elsewhere just that these places offer some safe haven.
(NewEgg barely missed the boycott list but that is a repost)

The only tech I am fanatical about are Ibanez guitars, Marshall amps and my Morley Wah.

Once I got my first Kodak Z-Series, a refurbished ZD710, I became a loyal fan of their bridging cameras [a/k/a Super-Zoom] (and their Schneider lenses).
When I found out, to my horror, that they're dropping out of the digital camera business, I grabbed their opus magnum, the Z990, while I could still get one. It's just plain awesome.*

When I have to choose to for myself (freelancing and hobby) I must choose free products.
In that case I choose whatever fits my current needs.
When I am given chance to advise about buying products for my employer it is usually compromise between budget and developers' needs.
We zealously stick with Visual Studio, but we are opened to use whatever we need for other work (profilers, RDBMS', frameworks etc.).
Similarly as OriginalGriff we have a sh*t list.

For me this applies to everything, computers, cars, food... everything.
When I need something I'll search for what's the offer and decide what best fits my needs and constraints.
Of course that after 35 years I have some blacklisted companies and others that I only buy from them if I really have no other option. This is usually caused by either bad products or poor support.
Word of mouth is also important to me.
If someone I know already uses somethig that suites my needs I'll take he's opinion in consideration.

I wonder how many apple/iphone fan boys voted "I buy from the company whose product or service suits me best at the time"

Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

I have some companies that enchanted me one time, and from this very day, got me loyal.
One day, one of my order was late, so I called amazon to know what was going on. They refund the transport fee without me asking for it... Then 30 min after, I saw that the transporter dropped my order in the mailbox. (So it was not late after all)
Now I buy something like 1500$ per year from amazon, telling my story to everyone, and never ever had any problem with them. That's enchantment. That's greatness.
Transport fee was about 10$, but their trust by default policy is invaluable. Especially when most of the world applies the liar by default policy.

the mistery is to find that company.
The quantity of time I use comparing and searching for a good quality-price is directly related to the amount of money I am going to spend. For cheap consumables, just where it's confortable for me.
But as someone said:

Each time they have a nice offers to attact customers but IN AND ALL we spent same money, doesn't matter is it with or without offer.
Once we buy a product, companies may ask us, "What you mean by service "
My mind raises a question always, "Are companies really loyal to us (customer)" ?
Rating always..... WELCOME

Why should they? At the stores of a certain fruit company I always get the impression that it's a huge honor to be let in and even be noticed by one of the salesmen. And by their shocked reactions I conclude that it does not happen often that somebody yawns at their usual sermons and is rude enough to interrupt them, only to ask uncomfortable questions. Do you have any meaningful benchmarks for that processor in there? What are the specifications of the graphics chip? Does it support (pick any feature that the newest graphic chips barely support)? Does it have its own graphics memory or shared memory? It usually takes only a minute and they are happy to see me leave and even forgive me for having taken some of their precious time without leaving a single buck in their store.
But honestly, why should they offer any service? They have their customers eating out of their hands, jumping through any hoop and paying almost any price.

Agree. I was a big fan of Nokia, but the service I got after having bought N85 scares me. I need a Windows 8 mobile but not a one from Nokia...

...of companies that I will not buy from, because I have had real problems in the past, and they have done little or nothing to help or fix the problem. Some are retailers, some are software producers, some hardware makers.
I also have a "gold star" list of companies who either don't cause a problem or who move heaven and earth to fix hassles.
I do avoid Apple - overpriced, overhyped, fashion accessories that from what I can see cause more problems than they solve.

Yes, I have had a few of those. But I've never had a "sh*t list" move back to "gold" again!
