I can't think of a good reason, no.
I suspect you are right and this is either autospam, or a rep-boosting attempt (on a massive scale).
If you get an email telling you that you can catch Swine Flu from tinned pork then just delete it. It's Spam.

This guy was on my radar as well. Glad he's been taken care of. Cheers, gentlemen.
(He was also unapologetic about the plagiarism when it was mentioned to him that he should cite his sources on copy/pastes)
