Hello,
The problem is: sometimes you have to do automatically configuration (logonscript, etc) in the context of the user-account. But somtimes you don´t have all the rights in the user context to do all this configuration.
In XP there´s runas.exe, which works fine, but is not scriptable. And its not smart to call exe´s from vb-scripts. The better way would be using a COM-Object. I know the solution from the MSDN (many lines of code) but does anyone know a *simple* API (eg. a Shell-api), that does the same thing like runas -> use the environment and profile from the logged-on user, but has the rights of another user (like administrator).
ps.: I know you can give a password to runas, when you use /netonly, but in this case you have no local rights!

you can make this in VB6 very eassy whit the API Text Viewer, you copy this code in a module and call you api whit one botton or in a action, you can find more documentation about one api and who to call in the VB help

Hello, my computer is running incredibly slow at time and I think I figured out why.. whenever it tries to find a file type or create a new file I think it searches my network and takes FOREVER. I noticed this when i tried to open a folder with a word perfect document, and it hung for almost a minute. is there any way to disable extended searching for file types?

Hi guys, hope there are a few networking gurus online today. I have two machines, a Win2K box and an XP box. I set up the Win2K box with a static IP address and configured it as a DHCP and DNS server.
When I first boot up the Win2K and XP boxes, the XP box gets a valid IP from the DHCP server. In addition running "nslookup" on the XP box shows that all is well.
However, after a few seconds of being able to access the default share on the Win2K box from the XP box (with me so far?) I get an error message on the XP box stating that the network connection is no longer available. Running "nslookup" on the XP box now returns the infamous
"DNS request timed out"
"timout was 2 seconds"
I'm also unable to ping the Win2K box by name (obviously) OR by IP address. It's like suddenly the DNS server doesn't exist.
Mind you, I'm unable to ping the XP box from the Win2K box either. Soon as I reboot the Win2K box though, everything is fine until I again dare to browse across the network. Back to square one.
Any ideas?

I wish I could help, but all I can do is commiserate. I've had Win2K Server running DNS for over a year, and it's never worked correctly. I've read books, online articles, every single "solution" in the MS Knowledge base, yet nothing works. It can't find anything if I use it instead of my ISP's DNS, and it seems to be at the root of the problem of the server freezing up every few days. A reboot restores everything, and the DNS even seems to work for a while, but it shortly begins malfunctioning again. Just out of curiosity, are you getting a ton of NetLogon 5774 errors in the Event log?

Nope, I clear the Event Log and it remains clean as a whistle. It's just that all of a sudden I'm unable to contact my DNS server after a few seconds of browsing. It's totally frustrating. I've even done a step by step configuration using Mark Minasis' excellent book on Windows 2000 server. Nothing helps. I've ruined one mouse already after slamming it against the wall in frustration.
Setting up a DNS server is not rocket science, especially when the "network" is only 2 PC's big and not connected to the internet in any way.
I just don't know.

You're right, it's not rocket science, and it shouldn't be hard at all, especially with your configuration! Mine is similar, two hosts (though one is rarely switched on), but I have a dual-homed server with one card on the LAN and the other on the Internet. I set up DNS using the automatic settings created by the windows installer, including the Default-Site zones that not one of the books on the subject mentions. I'm tempted to create another zone and configure it manually, then delete the defaults, but I'm chicken...

I mentioned a while back that we had "lost" our Windows XP Pro CD. It was from an MSDN pack as we are an MCP company.
Someone mentioned that I could go to the MSDN subscribers download area and download an ISO image of Windows XP Pro.
Well I went and for the life of me I cannot find it. Anyone care to point me in the right direction? Thanks

My problem was that the frikin tree nav in the left hand panel was not fully loading. But it did not give any errors or look like it was half loaded, so I assumed I was in the wrong place.
BTW, that left hand tree really bites because unlike the rest of the MSDN site it cannot be expanded horizontally. So with deep nestings you have to scroll horizontally, highly annoying.

I have downloaded a utility from this site called "ShowVer.exe" (http://www.codeproject.com/dll/ShowVer.asp) that shows information about Windows DLLs. It seems to work fine on most Windows platforms (2000 for instance), but crashes when I attempt to run it on Win98. Anyone know why?

I've (A friend has, I'm not that stupid...) Windows Me OS, with Windows Media Player 9.0.
I've tried to connect to internet radio (using MPlayer9) but the only thing I saw was a message on the status bar: "Buffering...".
I couldn't hear a thing, it just beffered. The weird thing is that it didn't send or received (bytes) anything while so-called buffering.
Any ideas HOWTO resolve this issue?!

Having spent several days restoring a hopelessly damaged system I now need to rebuild all the apps that were once installed. At the moment I have Win2K Server SP2 running (though it is still freezing up periodically) with only the peripherals, IE/OE5.0, Sonork, Trillian, and a nifty program for talking to my digicam installed. That would seem to narrow the list of candidates for the freezing problem.
I now need to add my apps and addons/upgrades, to wit: Win2K SP3, .NET Framework, VS6SP5, PSDK, MSDN, DDSK, Quickbooks, Access, Jasc Photoshop, PHP, SimpliCD, SQL Server, MDAC2.7, MSDE, Palm Desktop, CuteFTP, and a small assortment of lesser applications. Happily, all of the downloaded software still exists on various drives, so in most cases it's simply a matter of locating the original self-extracting file to re-install.
Is there a recommended order I should follow to minimize problems or conflicts during the process? Suggestions are most welcome!

Well, a few of those items are redundant:
SQL Server 2000 SP3 contains MDAC 2.7, so if you apply SQL Server 2000 SP 3, you shouldn't need to install MDAC.
MSDE is a subset of SQL Server, so you shouldn't need to install that (and shouldn't really, unless you know what you are doing. Improperly installing MSDE after installing SQL Server may break SQL Server (or at least the SQL Server tools).

Thanks, Jerry. I just noticed that I actually have SP4 for SQL Server, so I used that instead. Unfortunately I installed SQL Server on the I: drive, and the management program insists on trying to open an out of date version on the C: drive. Asinine installation programs...

I've re-installed SQL Server 7 three times, then attempted to apply SP3 and SP4. Both fail, claiming that an entry point in ums.dll doesn't exist: CreateUser@UmsScheduler@@ blahblahblah.
This package installed perfectly about a year ago, and the CD is undamaged! Technet is completely silent about the issue. This is nuts!!! Should I just copy the newer version of ums.dll to the active directory? Ideas, anyone?

Oops!
In my previous posts, note that I was speaking of SQL Server 2000, not SQL Server 7, so you may well have to apply MDAC 2.7 (I'm not that familiar with SQL 7, as it's been awhile).
You might want to search your hard drive for the file "sqlsp.log". This might help you get to the problem.

Thanks, Jerry, but all it tells me is that it couldn't start MSSQL Server; I already knew that. I downloaded and tried to install SP3 just in case it provided the missing entry point in the ums.dll file, but it caused the same set of errors. Installing MDAC2.7 worked fine, but I'll have to remove and re-install the SQL Server again without the service pack and leave it at that. Thanks again for the suggestions...

Every time I go to start my weblog I made I get this....
Server Error in '/VS/WebLog' Application.<br />

Server cannot access application directory 'C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\VS\WebLog\'. The directory does not exist or is not accessible because of security settings.
I go and check the folder, and it says it's read-only so I uncheck it. But then I go and click on it again and it still says it's read only....?!?! All of the files on my hard drive are like this....
I dont really remember if they were all read only before....
this all happened after I installed the new .net server on my other hard drive...
how do I fix this???

I have serveral remote servers that I would like to streamline setting up Visual Studio Projects and applications on, but I'm having trouble. Now I'm familar with the basics of IIS administration. I've setup .NET applications before on my localhost and on remotes servers with no bells or whistles and thought everything was a "go". Then I encountered this situation. The site is a subdomain, which I don't think is an issue at all. But the IP address is shared among several subdomains. Same IP but I need different web applications, one for each subdomain.
Does anyone have a suggestion for this one?
