Every user on Facebook has the same profile page, so what do you mean by a user "has 3 pages" ?

I have about 10 sets list of values tables that I need to bind to a dropdownlist on the webform. My question is when should I do databinding to get better performance?
I have tried at:
OnInit() and Page_Load() but still seeing the slowness.
Any suggestions? - Thank you in advance!

In my opinion,
the page.load cycle.
Page.Init is for creating controls or HTML elements, creating the framework or structure of the web page. Page.Load is for loading data into the framework, or HTML elements.
As far as the slowness goes, binding to a control is just plain slow. You can write more efficient code to populate a dropdown box, that would be much faster in operation.

Thank you jkirkerx!
That's help save me a few bucks. I was gonna go buy redgate ants to figure out where the bottleneck at.

Your Welcome
That's a popular question,
I use to bind years ago, but overall in the end, the bindings have to be recreated if you move your project to another server or something. And it was so slow, because the binding code has to be created every time it's used.
So you create a function to load the data, and package the data in a class or structure, and loop through the class or structure records. Something like below code, that's just off the top of my head in vb, but you should get the idea.
Public Structure structure_States
Public p_StateName as string
Public p_StateAbbr as string
End Structure
Public Sub load_States()
ddl_StateNames_Field.Items.Clear
Dim p_stateCount as Integer = get_StateNames_Count()
Dim sSn(p_stateCount) as structure_States
Dim dwExitCode as Integer = load_StateNames(sSn)
if (0 = dwExitCode) then
For idx as Integer = 0 to sSn.length - 1
ddl_StateNames.Item.add(new ListItem(sSn(idx).p_StateName, sSn(idx).p_stateAbbr))
Next
end if
end Sub
Public Function load_StateNames(ByRef s_StateNames() as structure_States) As Integer
Dim dwExitCode as Integer = 2
'Do Database Read
return dwExitCode
End Function

Hey everyone,
I have a great opportunity at work to get to learn ASP.NET. One of the project I need to work on is to design a web form for software registration. However, I do not know ASP.NET that well... actually not at all. I was wondering if any of you can recommend either books or web sites that you found that was helpful in learning ASP.NET.
By the way, I am not asking for a Google search of "Asp.net Tutorials" what I am asking is what tutorials have you found helpful in learning ASP.Net.
Not sure if that helps at all but I am using VS2010 and using C# for the behind code.
Thanks!

There are three tutorials on W3Schools and they are pretty good.
http://www.w3schools.com/aspnet/default.asp[^]
However, in working with a lot of developers over the years, you don't want to focus on the specifics of ASP.Net, which is just a server-side HTML-generator, essentially. Since it's generating HTML, and the browser only understands HTML, an ASP.Net developer who isn't an EXPERT in HTML is going to have difficulties. So, my suggestion, to become a good ASP.Net developer, is to go learn HTML5/CSS3/JQuery and how to build pages using only that stuff. THEN, you will be competent at programming the ASP.Net server to emit HTML pages.
One of the best tutorial sites on the web is Codecademy - interactive tutorials which run automated tests against your code to check your work. I've done almost all of their tutorials on various languages, and I highly recommend doing their basic web development tutorials, AND the advanced ones about JQuery and you should also pick an API like Parse, and learn that too. This will give you a holistic view of current web programming languages, and a simple introduction to all of them.

You make a great point about getting familiar with html5/css3/JQuery. I will look into that.
I have been using w3schools as that is a wonderful website in learning many great tools.
One thing I was unaware of is that code academy site. I will definitely take a look at that.
Thank you!

Thank you for that! Last Friday I found this great video tutorial on ASP.Net showing me how to do something I need to do on my project!
Very informative site! Thanks for the suggestion!

Hey,
I am trying to publish a checkin on a user facebook wall using the Graph API.
Before I do, I get the access_token with the following scope:
offline_access,publish_actions,publish_stream,user_checkins,publish_checkins,friends_checkins
It works fine when I publish a normal post on the users wall but when I try to publish a checkin, I get the following error:
(OAuthException - #200) (#200) Requires extended permission: publish_checkins
The code Im using to publish the checkin is:
Dim client As New FacebookClient(token)
client.Post("/me/checkins", New With {.message = Message, .place = placeID, .coordinates = coordinates})
|
|
|
|
|
It's not an error in your code, the user hasn't given that permission to your app. You'll have to log in your Facebook account and it should have a request from your app waiting for you. Only the Facebook user can change this option - your app can't change it.
|
|
|
|
|
Hey
I know that it is not an error.
currently i'm testing it using my own account, when I call the oauth/authorize, I allow my app, but the facebook error remains when I try to publish a checkin...
Could it be my own privacy settings?
Any Idea what im doing wrong?

vbs needs to be run from C# web application on windows server 2003.
Batch files works fine, but vbs neither via process nor via batch file.
vbs works fine via command prompt.
|
|
|
|
|
|
In Process.Start , cscript is the program to run, and your vbs script is the parameter.
|
|
|
|
|
Yes i am using it as
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("cscript","myvbs.vbs")
|
|

Thanks people for the help.
But i got my answer after little R&D
To make this work.
Application pool identity should be run as an USER, Network Services is default IIS 6. I switch it to Admin.
Reason: Network Services have lesser rights than USER.

Interesting, you should of got an error code back from the process shell telling you that.
I use this to capture the shell process result text from FFMPeg, and then I take the return values and run it against 30 regex functions to capture the results.
It took me awhile to figure out how to always return the shell process output, the function returns all the text in the process cmd window.
Private Function Shell_Exceute_FLV( _
ByVal Parameters_FFMpeg As String) As String
Dim Context As HttpContext = HttpContext.Current
Dim SB_FFMpeg As StringBuilder = New StringBuilder
Dim ffmpeg As New Process()
Dim ffmpeg_StreamReader As IO.StreamReader = Nothing
Try
Dim Results As String = Nothing
Dim ffmpeg_StartInfo As New ProcessStartInfo(Path_FFMPEG, Parameters_FFMpeg)
ffmpeg_StartInfo.UseShellExecute = False
ffmpeg_StartInfo.RedirectStandardError = True
ffmpeg_StartInfo.RedirectStandardOutput = True
ffmpeg.StartInfo = ffmpeg_StartInfo
ffmpeg.Start()
ffmpeg_StreamReader = ffmpeg.StandardError
SB_FFMpeg = New StringBuilder()
SB_FFMpeg.Append(ffmpeg_StreamReader.ReadToEnd().ToString())
Do While Not ffmpeg.WaitForExit(1000)
SB_FFMpeg.Append(ffmpeg_StreamReader.ReadToEnd().ToString())
Loop
Catch ex As Exception
Finally
If Not (ffmpeg Is Nothing) Then
ffmpeg.Close()
ffmpeg.Dispose()
ffmpeg = Nothing
End If
If Not (ffmpeg_StreamReader Is Nothing) Then
ffmpeg_StreamReader.Close()
ffmpeg_StreamReader.Dispose()
ffmpeg_StreamReader = Nothing
End If
End Try
Return SB_FFMpeg.ToString
End Function

I'm starting a side project, the first stage will be a building a web application with MVC, in later stages we will be adding clients for mobile platforms. My thought was to create one API that all of the applications (web and mobile) go through to get/save data.
Because these different platforms will be on different release cycles I'll need a way for, say IPhone, to work with one version of the API while the website is using an updated version. What's the best way to do that? Can someone point me to a nice article or blog post somewhere about that?
My ideas so far are:
*Create a separate project to host the MVC Web API and host that in a subdomain or in a subfolder of the root site. Then either reference the DLL directly or reference it through the web (seems like an unnecessary http call)
*House the API withing the MVC project that will be the website and try to version it based on url in there. I did some quick testing with that this morning and wasn't able to get it to work, it always resided at \api (I couldn't get it to reside at \api_v2)
Any ideas or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
