I worked on a project where the team was very precise with their language. They were concerned that GUID could be confused with something in the GUI.
So they introduced "Sid the GUID Squid," a large posted of a cartoon squid. I'm always reminded of Sid when this topic comes up.
It was also a joke when new team members arrived and almost always pronounced it "Goo-id." Correcting them reminded me of what I once heard from a sweet Southern Belle (a proper woman from the southeast USA), "No, honey. A pee-can is what you use in the car on long trips. It's 'Pecan.'"

I avoid saying it out loud so I don't sound like an idiot if I'm saying it wrong.

I worked with someone who did the same. I was surprised to not see it on the list. Just to be clear though, it was pronounced gooey-I-D where the letters in ID were said separately.
