I have PWS installed and I'm trying to preview a simple ASP .NET page. Since I only have Win98, I can't use Web Matrix's built-in server. So I will have to use IIS, which comes with the NT 4 Option pack for Win 95/98. My question is: how do I set up an IIS app for the .NET page? I heard that IIS apps are administered through the IIS MMC snap-in. But the IIS snap-in isn't listed in the list of available snap-ins. How do I register/install it????
Thanks

Either you are a genius, or a bit confused. IIS only runs on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003. It does not work on Windows 98.
That is why they made PWS. Windows 98 is not a server product.
i.e. You cannot get the MMC IIS snap-on in Windows 98 because IIS does not work on Windows 98.
The NT4 Option Pack is exactly that. An option pack for Windows NT4. Not Windows 98.
What you need to do is get hold of Windows 2000 (or Windows NT 4 if you insist.) Then you can run IIS locally and do all those nifty bits.

No, Windows 98 is not a server OS; yes, it can run scaled-down versions of some servers, including MTS. Whether that includes IIS I don't know. I only know that the NT Option Pack has all the IIS dlls.

2. How do I size the new window so it is smaller that the orginial window?
Thanks

C# is a Server Side language.
You need to use JavaScript to control the Client Side.
You can use C# to output your JavaScript which is then run on the CS.
e.g. mycontrol.Attributes.Add("onclick", "window.open(\"newwindow.aspx\", \"width-100; height=100;\")");
To control the window you use the window.open method in JS.

I already have a view in SQL2000. How can I use that query to return and display in Crystal? Any basics out there for me?
Thanks

Hi,
I'm trying to update a progress bar with the load progress of a webpage. On my form I have a webbrowser control and a progress control. I'm trying to use the ProgressChange event but it fires for every item that has to be downloaded (images, etc). So when the page starts loading after the first item completes the progress bar is finished even though most of the page is still loading. My question is how do I know what the progress is for the entire page instead of simply an item?
I tried posting this in the C# forum, but they said it was a question better suited for this forum.
Many thanks in advance.

I installed Visual Studio Service Pack 5 for Visual Studion 6.
Now I can't debug ASP. ( cannot see dllhost or inetinfo when trying to 'attach process' in InterDev )
Thanks in advance for any help.

Use the ISM to find the Aplication Configuration dialog for the application, then in the App Debugging tab enable the Enable Server-Side Script Debugging option. This causes IIS5 to run in single-thread mode, so be sure to disable it after the debugging is complete or you'll have performance problems.

Roger , I have tried that option but still nothing happens,..the problem is still you cant see dllhost or inetinfo in 'attach process'of interdev.
This happens after installing svc pack 5...

Hmmm. I've never used that option before, so I have no idea what's happenning there. I just reinstalled Win2K and VS6SP5 a couple of weeks ago, and have had no trouble with InterDev yet. Sorry 'bout that...

roger, how do you debug ASPs in your machine?
arent you using the attch process option?
Thanks,

I don't even know what 'attach process' means - I'm a simpleton, and rely on the browser to identify the error, file, and line # on the problem. It's generally seemed quite trivial so far, but I haven't done any extremely complex ASP stuff. In the ASP books, online articles, and MSDN documentation I've never seen any mention of a debugger for ASP, so I've assumed all along that: a) it doesn't work; b) it doesn't exist; c) no one else actually uses InterDev. I haven't needed that capability, and haven't looked for it.

Roger,
You can find the 'processes' in the debug menu in interdev,..
ASP real-time debugging is really necessary when you jump into big unknown systems. ( and heterogeneous systems which involve different technologies)
I've almost found the solution to the problem,.. It happens because of the it happens because of the frontpage installation which unnecessarily involves with IIS..
Thanks..

I've found response.write to be a great friend. Clumsy perhaps, but it works well to show you what's going on with values held by rogue variables behind the scenes. Not too sure what you want to debug, but I hope that helps
It's much better than the term "embedded," though. I'm tired of hearing about embedded reporters. That must be a lousy job, like having a career as a suppository. - Roger Wright

Megan,
Thanks,
of course reponse.write is a very 'responsive' friend, but when one wants to debug a complete transaction of events its just not enough..
I am working with this big system with 'black fumes'..involves ASP,ISAPI DLLs, COM, NT Services,DB and MainFrame..(sigh) lets not talk abt the JSP side..
(When its working) , real-time debugging is very handy. You can set breakpoints in C++ IDE style.

I had to reinstall IIS because out of nowhere I was getting a Server Application Error on my local Win2000 Prof box when trying to connect to a SQL2000 database in the webbrowser using ASP.
Now the previous error is gone but now the SQL permissions do not allow the IUSR account to access the database. I have checked all the permissions in SQL and all appears to be ok.
Now what? I still get a login error in the browser for SQL!!!!!!!!

You put it as it was a bad thing

Is your web server and sql server the same machine? Don't forget that the IUSR is a local machine account, so it is not trusted by other machines.

Hi,
How can I crypt my url, in the way like overture.com (for example) do?
So, the encoded url should look something like this:

You don't. It's not safe.
Ok, assuming you WANT to put sensitive information on an URL, you could encrypt something on the server with a key.
Take a look at System.Security.Cryptography. You'll find tons of samples on the Web and even on CP.
If you have only ASP, use a decent component, don't trust anyone coding an encryption algorithm in VBScript or JavaScript, probably is garbage. Even if one claims "I invented it, and it's secure enough for me".
