I couldn't live without my mobile phone - I use it all the time. If we re going, I'll call friends to see what they're doing, if they're coming etc. Also love SMS - so convenient, esp. with predictive input.
I don't use my mobile as much at uni, but even so it's still invaluable!

Truly, with a vengeance. Actually I hate anything that involves a microphone, but phones more than anything else.
I have to pay for a landline, so that I can use the internet but my total outgoing (non-internet) calls usually amounts to about 8 per quarter. I'm usually connected to the internet just to stop the auto-diallers getting to me, so then I have to have a mobile as well so that real people who want to contact me can.
Again, I make about 2 calls a month, but I still have to pay for the "free" minutes I never use. Ironicly, people still don't get through to me on the phone because I'm useless with the concept of a *mobile* phone and always leave it in my coat pocket.
If people could just get used to the fact that I'm more likely to read an email than answer a phone then I'd be a much happier person. I could get rid of my mobile. Then I can work on convincing the world that landlines are for internet connections and should otherwise be destroyed.

What you need is an app/device that records an answering machine msg and emails it to you. My old job used to have that and it ruled. I checked my email, and my voice mail was integrated right in there. I miss that from my old job!

I totally agree. There is nothing as rude as a phone call. We're conditioned from birth to respond to a ringing phone by dropping whatever we're doing to pick it up. Pavlov never got such a positive response from his subjects! I don't tolerate guests dropping by and walking in the door whenever they feel like it, and I refuse to salivate because someone rings the bell on my landline. Sometimes I just listen in while they leave a message, knowing that whatever the caller has to say isn't remotely as important to me as what I'm doing. And if they won't start a message at least, they're obviously no one of any importance to me - I don't answer, ever. I don't even leave the ringers connected anymore; leave a message or forget my phone number. Better yet, email me, and I'll get back to you when it's convenient for me!

I actually prefer people to call me by phone, as most calls I get are from friends who're special to me, and I can speak far quicker than I can type. Replying to longish emails takes me ages!
SMS works well too. Ideal for letting someone know what's happening without the worry of interrupting them, and cheap in the UK.

Exactly my thoughts. I really hate it when somebody sends me a 'Hi how are you doing, we haven't talked for a while' email with many pages of bumph about what they've been up to. I'd far rather they phoned for a chat, it just feels more social. The only exception is friends who are in very expensive to phone places.

I'm glad i'm not the only one that enjoys chatting on the phone!
I signed up with One.Tel when NTL installed my phone line...they have a "free local/national calls after 6pm and all weekend for £5" deal which is perfect for me.

Wow, that's exactly what I do. A homework partner I had last quarter had a habit of frequently calling me instead of emailing; near the end of the quarter I simply "forgot" to answer my cell phone. I really dislike it when people don't leave a message, but leaving a worthless message such as "hey call back, it's important" is just as bad. I think email forces people to think about what they need to say a bit more, and hopefully be more concise.

I switch my mobile on once during the day - And that's to set the alarm clock function at night!
It's off for the other 23 hours 59 minutes. People don't even bother leaving messages anymore. They know it'll be 4 days before I get them!
Gradually people are realising they are guaranteed a reply if they send me an email.

Yes. I do hate phones. Phones are annoying mostly if you don't know who's calling you - I hate that.
But email is to for me.
I prefer hanging around in IRC, where everyone that knows me know that I'm there and will respond when convenient.
For urgent things that can make a query, write what they want and I can read it and decide when I want to answer  It pops up in seconds like a phone call, is instantly like a message and I can answer it directly - but just when I want to

Paul, you are betraying at least your age and gender
Factors that contribute to phone-hatred:
- Male
- Married (primarily if male)
- Children (particularly for males)
- Later 30's or older (prior to mobile-phone "revolution")
- Actually does work at work
- Occupational stress (obvious for programmers)
- Caffeine intake (redundant criteria for programmers without severe heart disease)

I almost always have my phone with me and writing a txt is quick and easy as well as being cheap and delivers to almost anywhere in the world in a few seconds... Sher meself and Paul W does be SMSing internationally on occasion... quick, cheap, easy and can be used in situations where you don't have email... like sitting on a beach, on the floor of a toilet in a nite club [ ] and so on...
