The majority of infrastructure in the world still runs on Windows XP, including 95% of ATMs. That alone should disqualify Windows from being considered a "second-class citizen." At least for the moment. Once XP finally kicks the bucket, who knows.

Windows 8.1 will no doubt replace Windows XP as the ATM OS of choice. I mean, after all, it's touch-centric, right? (Only half of me is kidding, the other half...)

Well that statement could have been made by a DEC executive in the 80's:
Lloyd Atkinson wrote: Enough of bullsh*t like this, if anyone seriously considers a PC

minicomputers then they should find a new section of journalism to write
about.

That may be true, but until someone actually solves the problem of input on a mobile device, I'll stick to a desktop for word processing.

... and number crunching
Well, most things. A mobile is a useful supplementary device. PC's are selling slower because the market is saturated.

I'd say slow decline among consumers. Very slow decline in enterprises.

A comment from Microsoft's new CEO may be just the thing to inspire the next series of books on leadership and management. "Of all the races in the Galaxy, only the English could possibly revive the memory of the most horrific wars ever to sunder the Universe and transform it into into what I'm afraid is generally regarded as an incomprehensibly dull and pointless game"

Amazon has compiled a list of 100 must-reads from its Amazon Books staff into a list of “100 Books to Read in a Lifetime,” a guide for people looking for that next great book. If I don't read them, do I live forever?

Any list has Harry Potter on it is worthless - IMHO...
I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is. (V)

Why?
It has opened the door to book reading and literature to a lot of kids.
One thing I might agree with you, is that they could have merge the Harry Potter series as one entry instead of many in the list.

IMO, it is impossible to make a list of 100 books; there are just too many.
I'd rather be phishing!

"It has opened the door to book reading and literature to a lot of kids."
While commendable it itself, that does not make it something an adult should feel compelled to "read before you die". Great children's books, though personally I still prefer the Dark Materials trilogy.

There were a number of other children's books on the list (Goodnight, Moon for one example), so I don't think they mean the entire list for adult reading. Just, "to read sometime before you die."
However, the plot twists and characterization in "Goodnight, Moon"? Riveting.

I think by reading some more than once (Tolkien, Anne Frank, etc.) I don't have to read the others.

Hey, you don't get out of reading Crime and (Freaking) Punishment by reading Lord of the Rings 100 times. Suffer with the rest of us!

In America, you read "Crime and (Freaking) Punishment", in Russia "War and Peace" reads you.

I refuse to believe anyone has read the entire volume of LotR that many times. I suspect almost everyone skips those interminable elvish pomes.

Why Not? Interesting idea, and it seems to work.
One of the few ways to make it even easier is to have a button on the items that, when pushed, logs a request about the related item to the maintenance system. That also has the bonus of not having to have a smartphone with you.

I've got to imagine there will definitely be comics about the adventures of Bill Gates someday, if there aren't (non fan-fic) ones already. "Gates swoops down into Africa to fight Cholera! KA-POW!"
