It may just be a normal network broadcast, the pc is 'announcing itself' to the network, maybe...
Does Sygate report the local port and the remote ip and port ?

It seems to be just the normal NetBIOS announcements. I expected that to be in a separate service, but ntoskrnl is the source reported. It would be so nice to have a reference to the functions that all these various processes in Windows perform, and why they're needed...

I regularly use perfmon.exe as one of my debugging tools. Out of nowhere, 2 major counter object categories, Memory and Processor, disappeared from the selection drop-down box. The registry troubleshooting info at MSDN is kind of off, as it relates to Win 2K, not XP. Anybody know how to re-init perfmon or make it sane again?

Does anyone have information about the user rights required to install browser plugins?
I have some "restricted users" on my Win2K machine that can't install the Flash plugin. It was already installed by an admin user, but the restricted user still got the error message saying that it had not been installed.
Is this expected? Where are plugins saved on disk?
Thanks,
Richard

Hello,
Application
-----------
I've created a multi-tier application. Its architecture is:
On client machine --> the client application is an ActiveX EXE component (VBasic).
On server machine --> some COM+ server applications and a SQLServer database.
Use Case
--------
CLIENT1
--> asks SQLServer database for an object (= a row in objects table).
The state of this object is stored in a storage file.
--> if the object can be check out, it means nobody else have checked out the object,
the server will set the objects.checkedoutby = ClientID and will copy the stg file
in a shared folder on server machine.
CLIENT2
--> tries to check out the same object
--> the server must know (??? - MY QUESTION IS ABOUT THIS POINT) if the CLIENT1 application
is still running or a crash has occured and CLIENT1 was not able to check in the object.
Remarks
-------
1) CLIENT2 will receive a copy of the storage file if CLIENT1 is still running
2) CLIENT2 will have the possibility to restore the storage file from
an older version if a crash occured in the CLIENT1 application.
3) Many clients can log in using the same account (user name and password)
4) There can be more than one instances of the application on the same client machine
My solution
-----------
My solution is to create an instance of an "watchdog" ActiveX EXE on the client machine
when the client application is started. This "watchdog", from time to time (5 minutes by example),
will modify the value of a date field named NotificationDate in database.
When the client application shuts down, the "watchdog" will stop updating that field.
The stored procedure responsible for check out will use the value of NotificationDate field
to decide whether the CLIENT1 application that use this object is still running or a crash has occured.
Questions
---------
1) Is there a pattern for this problem?
2) What about my solution?

Ovidiu

So here's the problem:
I have a custom GINA that I'm working on that (for now) simple replaces the logon UI and logons on as a specific user. My Dialogs appear and I can logon, but my desktop is all screwy. The background image appears and some icons show up but the taskbar, startmenu only show up as outlines. Everything appears to be in it's appropriate place, as I can click where Run should be on the start menu and type cmd and the command window will appear but things like explorer will only show some icons and maybe a border (if I'm lucky).
Any suggestions would be helpful.

I install Visual Studio.NET to win 2000 server. But normal users can not debug
in VS.NET. And there is no debug user type in user types. so only administaror group member could debug in VS.NET. I do not want to install Active Directory only for this and also do not want to give admin rights to users. What could I do.

I have a question about setting up a WINS server. I have created a Windows 2000 AD domain and was using a LMHOSTS file so the pcs on my network would easily find the domain controller. I have a mix of NT 4, Win2k Pro and XP Pro boxes. Anyways I decided to set up a wins server to make it easier to manage. The problem is that I replaced the company primary wins server with my wins server and now the pcs cannot see the other domains from the company wins server. I know there is a push / pull feature but my server does not have the permissions to connect to the company wins server in this way. I also know they would not give me that permission. Is there any way around this?

I was 'analyzing' the computers at the tax service where I'm working and noticed an oddity that I've encountered before. There are 6 PCs networked in a Peer-to-Peer configuration, and I've verified that all are in the same workgroup. According to MS documentation, opening the Computers Near Me window is supposed to display all the connected computers in the same workgroup as the local host. It doesn't - after a long delay the window finally displays a blank window - and thinking back to other networks I've used, it never has. Opening the Entire Network and selecting Microsoft Network properly displays them all, and the network functions perfectly. These are all Win2K machines and, as I mentioned, everything works as it should except this function. Can anyone explain this odd behavior?

Hi,
I'd like to test my programs using a network throttler that will simulate my 100Mbps Ethernet as a 56K modem, or so.
Is there some program I can install?
Thanks,

I've created an app in MFC that is dialog based, and I call functions such as GetIfTable to retrieve data and display it using SetDlgItemText to pop it into an editbox.
However, when I call GetIpNetTable to get a table of Address Resolution Table rows, I immediately lose my m_hWnd member. I've not had this problem with the other functions, just this one.
Has anyone come across this problem before? I've looked on google but can't find anything. I've tried creating a dummy HWND and assigning it the value of m_hWnd and then reassigning after calling the function but all I get is an access violation message.
Obseve everything, remember more...

Sorted it - user error I think.
I put a watch on m_hWnd and after calling the function it said the expression could not be evaluated. I had allocated the buffer too small so it seems the buffer was overwritten, and the variable m_hWnd was overwritten!

I am using the PalmOS 5 Simulator on my system, and it works great. The only problem is everytime i close it it loses all and any settings i have set. I belive this is because it simply keeps the "Palm" memory in RAM while the application is running, and once it ends it vanishes altogehter.
I am wondering if there is an app which will, when i close the simulator, allow me to save its current used memory on the PC to a disk file, and then next time i load the simulator it would reload the memory, and let me pick up working on the "Palm" where i had left off last time i used it.
Is there an application to persist memory like this?
Thanks in advance.
