No necessarily true...
It may be handed down to you because the person left the company and you the only logical person to fill his spot. You have to take over all the things that he wrote.
I had such an experience where I had to take over someone else's position and inherit their code. They had a couple of perl scripts which they used for doing some of the automation. I had to first learn perl by myself before I could maintain/change these scripts. This was however my own initiative and had no support/input from any managers.

Point I want to make is nobody cared whether I could do the work or not because they didn't know what was handed down to me. At the end of the day they just care about the results. i.e. is the work done? yes/no
