AdBlock!

Why would I pay for something I already have? Even without ad-blocker? Something that works across all applications? On both Windows and Linux?
Read this[^], and download the textfile.
I'll build an auto-updater, might make it somewhat easier.

Pretty much this. Adblock is a wrong way to block ads.

Over the last year or two I've been moving away from domain based rules in my adblocker because I've increasingly ran into problems where they're hosted on the same CDN as legit content; with the result that I either have to spend 5 or 10 minutes troubleshooting the problem or temporarily turn my blocker off. Editing a HOST file every time there's a problem would be a giant leap backward.

They'll advertise one way or the other.
Internet companies run on advertising for other companies, what do you think Google earns most of the profit? Where does Facebook get money? They get most of the money from showing ads, well they're not pop-ups but ads are ads.
So even when you pay, they'll still show you ads, but no wonder they'll be popup or integrated to your website etc.

"AdBlock" - do you know how they make their money by blocking ads?
Well, actually quite easy: companies are forced to pay them big money in order to get their ads not-blocked...
And again you see the ads, just made sure that some money was sent to AdBlock, and hence you must see more ads to compensate for that money paid for not blocking the ads. Great!

The Russian press agency ITAR-TASS is reporting something so surprising that I'm having a hard time believing it: Cosmonauts have found microorganisms on the exterior of the International Space Station. "If we let it in, the ship could be infected. You know the quarantine procedure. Twenty-four hours for decontamination."

Plankton in these stages of development could be found on the surface of the oceans. This is not typical for Baikonur. It means that there are some uplifting air currents which reach the station and settle on its surface.
Or maybe they hitched a ride on the space shuttle or dragon capsule both of which launch from coastal areas. I suspect the same is true of Japan's cargo launches too.

When it comes to code, there is great truth in the old saying: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; show him how to catch fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” Do you have some library or framework for which, when people come to you with questions, you say “Before I answer that, the thing is…”? Of course you do.
But teach a programmer to fish and...he still doesn't know how to use StackOverflow?

While reading about various programming languages, I developed a hunch about how often different languages are mentioned by other communities and about the average conversational tones used by relative members.
PHP developers really need to watch their mouths...

I've been poking around for a language that's not clinically insane that was written to serve the niche that php is supposed to occupy.
I may just end up using python.

Young programmers don't generally seek advice from aging coders. Fine -- but for once, sit down, shut up, and listen in. In my day we didn't have any of these new-fangled variables. And we loved it!

I like #7...
Quote: 7. Programming is not hard unless you make it hard. People are still messing up software development in the same dumb ways since software separated from hardware. Programming simply requires reading, concentration, and logic. Luckily, plenty of books, courses, and patterns can tell you how to do all of that (see No. 6).
Coordination with other people on any scale? That's hard.
