Any particular part of Flash 5? Or just ... everything?
One tip ... use Flash MX, if possible, cuz the components addition is great.

my lecture is using ASP vr5.0 and i'm using vr5.1

for example:
1. rsRecordset.Open strSQL, adoCon, 3, 3
--> works on my server but not his
so i change to...
2. rsRecordset=adoCon.execute(strSQl)
--> it works!!!

Hi
How do you view the last line of a textarea without having to scroll down to it?

Change (or add) the rows= attribute to vertically size the box to show all the lines. The parent container may also need to be manipulated to accomodate it.

you could dynamically set the content of the TEXTAREA to a javascript variable and then show it on a popup DIV or anywhere you want...

Does anybody have experience with this?
Here's the scenario:
I have a Classic ASP web application that ran just fine on the same machine with an instance of an Oracle 8i database. So, in more specific terms ... one machine running both an Oracle DB and IIS to display information in web pages. This worked.
Then I upgraded the DB to 9i and it does not work. IIS still works, but when the ASP pages get to the point of trying to create the ADODB.Connection to Oracle ... error.
Two different errors occur because I have tried to connect to the DB two different ways.
Using OLE DB:
Oracle error occurred, but error message could not be retrieved from Oracle.
Using a DSN from ODBC:
Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 5 (Oracle in OraHome92).
Both instances point to driver related errors and the second hints to permission problems. I have tried allowing full permissions to everyone for just about everything possible on a test machine and can see no reason for drivers to be fouled up. Installing the most recent version of the MDAC has been attempted to no avail ... reinstalling the Oracle Client tools ... no go. Even a full reinstallation of Windows 2000 Server, the Oracle DB and the web app still results in the same errors.
If you can help shed any light on this or give suggestions of things to try I am more than willing to try them. TIA.

If this spiked anybody's curiosity I'd just like to let folks know that OO4O turned out to be a diamond in the rough.
Still haven't figured out what the deal was with ADO but, hey, it works now.

In one case we had a server that had both an 8i instance and a 9i instance and when we switched the ASP code to use OO4O everything magically worked again.
The other case was the same machine scenario (8i and 9i both installed) but the OO4O still gave us some funky permissions error. We wiped the machine of Oracle (both instances removed) and even cleared the registry of all the Oracle info. Then 9i was put back on and we had to give the IUSR and the IWAM users read and execute on permissions on the Bin directory. After all that things were running smoothly again. Crazy huh?
If you are using ASP with OO4O this link should help things get rolling:
http://www.15seconds.com/issue/000131.htm
To my knowledge, OO4O now comes with a normal installation of 9i but did not come with 8i.
I hope this is helpful information.

Is there a quick way to retrieve the current Windows user's logon name (assume a corp. intranet using Win2000 servers) using ASP? I have tried using <% = Request.ServerVariables("LOGON_USER") %> (as well as REMOTE_USER, UNMAPPED_REMOTE_USER, and AUTH_USER) - all of which return nothing.

This is the correct way to retrieve the logon name. Ensure that you are using Windows Integrated Authentication on the directory you are using through IIS. An example of how to to do this would be:
Open Internet Information Services (IIS)
Expand the Default Web Site
Right click a Directory (virtual or not)
Select Proporties
Go to the Directory Security tab
Click the Edit ... button for Anonymous Access and Authentication Control
Ensure that Windows Integrated Authentication is the ONLY checkbox that is checked
The default is that both Anonymous Access and Windows Integrated Authentication are checked. This will not work. You must turn off Anonymous Access.

Anyone know where I can find a list of characters and their escape sequence. Like space = %20, & = %26, etc.

It's just the ASCII character code in base 16.
Try Accessories/System Tools/Character Map, it will give you the code.
If programming, try a code using .ToString("X") on a char.

Hello CPians,
I am developing an application on ASP.NET with C# and one of the basic requirements is to dynamically update certain clients. In other words I need to send information to the client without the client requesting it in order to keep 3, 4 or 5 clients synchronised with the same info when one of them is updating the info.
I know that it sounds strange but this is the essence of the application.
I know that I can refresh the page every X seconds, but this is not good as it will overload the server with unwanted requests.
Is this feasible?
Any ideas are wellcomed!
Thanking you in advance...

You could use Response.Flush but whatever you do the synchronization will never be exact there will always be diferences.

Man, that sounds like fun!
It depends on when you need to refresh. What is the case where you will need the clients to refresh and what is the case where they don't need to refresh?
One thought ... if all of your clients are using Windows machines then you can create the Microsoft.XMLHTTP ActiveX object with JavaScript to do a small check if the browser should refresh or not. I know you said that you don't want to overload the server with unwanted requests but if you kept it to a small "Yes" or "No" answer then it shouldn't be that taxing.
function shouldIReload() {
var obj = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
obj.Open('GET', 'Refresh.aspx');
obj.Send();
if (obj.responseText == "yes") {
document.location.reload();
}
}
setTimeout(shouldIReload, 1000);
This way you don't reload the entire page unecessarily and it's rather transparent to the end-user. You could even prompt the user with a confirmation box, or something friendly like that, to let the user know you are about to refresh the page and they should not crap their pants because something is happening when they didn't even click anything
The Refresh.aspx page would do a simple check of whatever criteria and only do a simple Response.Write("yes") or Response.Write("no") accordingly.
Let me know if this helps at all ...

SQL = "UPDATE questions SET request.form("R1") = votec WHERE ID = request.form("ID") "
how do you get this to work if request.form("r1") = a1
votec is a number entering a fld with datatype of number
and request.form("ID") may be a positive or negative number
THanks in advance

Is the a1 field within the same DB or a differernt DB??

a1 is a fld in the same database and table as everything else

Since votec is a number, and you're constructing a string, you might try an explicit cast of votec to a string representation; ie, CStr(votec) instead of merely 'votec'.
