Better question, are there any software companies in the entire US hiring?
I was actually thinking about this the other day. Does anyone know of any positions that have been filled in the last couple of months. I spent some time chatting with a recruiter I've known for awhile. He has been very fustrated by companies posting positions then pulling them after candidates have been submitted, or interviewing a few and then not returning emails or phone calls.

I started my current job on June 18. It has nothing to do with COM, XML, ASP, or anything close to being web-enabled. They just needed someone that could do MFC and C++.
Here's a little feedback on "recruiters". I don't really care for them. They are NOT genuinely concerned with getting you the best job to fit your skillset. They are concerned with getting you the best paying job, whether you are qualified or not. If they're just recruiters, they get a fee based on your hire salary. If they're from someplace like RHI or Maxim Group, they get at LEAST 95% of your salary as a fee for as long as you're contracted out.
They are NOT concerned with anything but how much money they're going to make off of you. They rip off companies who are desperate for qualified help and that would be be much better off financially by placing ads and going through the interview process themselves.
Maybe a good kind of company to have available is someone that merely conducts testing and first (and maybe even second) interview for potential employees, and pass on those who seem to be the best qualified. Charge a one-time fee on a per-interview process, and move on. That way, the company looking for the employee doesn't have to pay their existing high-dollar employees (managers and senior programmers) to conduct interviews themselves until a viable candidate has been weeded out of the stack.

Good for you on the job.
I agree somewhat about recruiters, they are just trying to make money like everyone else. However, they do cultivate the contacts and sometimes have the inside knowledge about positions that may be on the horizon. I have had bad experiences with some headhunters, but the few I do work with I spend the time to get to know them. I'm also not shy about telling the bad ones to get there bonus elsewhere and I've heard the "You'll never work in this town again." threat more than once.
I guess the bottom line is you have know and understand the nature of the relationship. The scorpian can't help stinging the turtle, it's his nature.

The only ones I've ever met admit (relunctantly) that they know NOTHING about software development, programmers, or the people that need programmers. How can you do that kind of job and NOT know what you're working with?
For the most part, headhunters are scum.

There's an ad in the Eugene Register/Guard this weekend for an MFC programmer in Springfield. Not quite Salem/Portland, but if you're in Salem in might work.
Ping me and I'll send you the particulars.

I know that the field offices for Microsoft are hiring (between 25-45% growth) if you look for a local branch and are good enough you might be able to get a job there.

Help: how to get a hard disk serial #?
|
|
|
|
|
Just making sure here, but if you are asking for the *volume" serial number (the serial number shown when you execute a "dir" command at a DOS prompt), you should be able to use ::GetVolumeInformation(...).
If you are looking for the serial number of the physical drive itself, I cannot help you there. There may be some BIOS or ATA commands to do it, but that is exceeding my expertise.

I am asking about the physical hard disk drive, but thank you anyway.

...Can you tell me why some so-called "experts" on the board suffer a basic lack on knowledge, understanding, or experience?
Can someone please give me a reality check and take a look at the (sadly ongoing) exchange between "MichaelS" and me ("jtwine") at http://www.experts-exchange.com/jsp/qShow.jsp?qid=20172611 (it will cost 10 points) and tell me why is it that some people out there just do not "get it"?
IMO, this is the kind of person that the article "Unskilled and Unaware of It" (http://www.apa.org/journals/psp/psp7761121.html) talks about. I am of the opinion that "MichaelS" exhibits two of the traits of the unskilled: they cannot recognize competence in others, and they cannot recognize their own incompetence.
My major beef is that "MichaelS" fails to understand why the change that (s)he gave to the original poster is akin to handing a loaded gun to someone that does not know how to check their targets.
I think I am going to write an article about this kind of stuff and put it here on CodeProject!
Peace!

I would like to know, how I can authenticate on web server through a form. I tried with InternetConnect function (Username and Password) but it doesn't work ?
Thanks

This may be kind of obvious and thus a stupid question, but did you try connection to the page the form was on or the page the form points to?

Hi everyone,
Well my propblem goes like this. First of all i want to let you know that the project that I have developed works under WinME , Win98SE and Win95B without any problems. I ran into this problem when someone wanted to install this on a Win95A machine. We also found out that this problem is also consistant on a win98 machine too. This project is being developed for the Federal Aviation Admisintraion (FAA) for Windows98 first edition based machines.
Well i developed this project with 4 activeX components and compiled this program and then used install shield to make a distribution of this program. When i installed this program on the WIN95A and Win98 machines they did not put the proper icon on the desktop. They inserted the MFC icon for its executable. That gave me an idea that soemything was wrong. After that i tried to run the program with double clciking on the icon and the hour glass ran and nothing happened. I found out that that machine had a 16 bit FAT partition so i tranformed that into 32 bit on the Win98 machine with its utility. Win95a u dont have this option ofcourse. I also used REGSVR32.exe to register the COMDLG32.OCX object. But this object in my instalation file was there without the DLL file. So i went ahead and registered that and it was succesful in registering. I rebooted as usual and nothing was working again. But the icon was correct this time. Well after that i decided to install VC++ compiler on that machine and saw that the project hada problem registering the AvctiveX Components. So i couldnt recompile the project on that machine to get this thing to run.
Well i am pretty much running out of options. I read afew articles that were online but i am a little puzzled. I need a little bit more insight and someone to tell me what exactly the problem is.
Thanks for your help

Without knowing a lot about the differences in Win95/Win98 versions, my biggest problem with OCX registration failing has always occurred when the OCX relies on DLLs that don't exist or are different versions in the system.
Have you used Depends.exe to have a look at what DLLs the OCX expects to find and made sure they are installed on the target systems?
Hope this helps.

Hello,
I could use a little help with a CListBox class I'm writing. I've been putting all sorts of code in the DrawItem function to make the List Box nice and pretty. Unfortunatly, I can't seem to change the background of the list box unless there are items in it. I.e., I've got three items in a list box that holds 10. The first three items will be my modified background color, but then the rest of the list box which isn't holding any items is just the default white. Another problem, probably related, is that I wanted to make the ListBox display the disabled color even when it contains no items (you'll noticed the default CListBox class gives no indication it's disabled unless there are items in it). Any thoughs/ideas?

I think you can achieve this by handling (reflected) WM_CTLCOLORLISTBOX in CYourListBox.

Thanks Tomasz, that's exactly what I needed. Just swap out the brush in there and it works perfectly...

Hi,
I've been writing application for Windows 95/98/Me which loads private DLL. In that DLL, I need to call functions in oleacc.dll that is not supported in Windows 95. To let single binary work on 3 different Windows, I tried Delayload option.
/delayload:oleacc.dll option seems worked, since dependency walker didn't show oleacc.dll is used. Though, when I tried to load my private DLL by LoadLibrary(), it failed. (I'm using LoadLibrary() and GetProcAddress() to control my DLL to handle any error regarding to this DLL.) And of course, it worked fine on 98/Me.
I'm quite sure any function belongs to oleacc was not called in DllMain(). If I commented out those functions, linker warned me that /delayload:oleacc.dll had no effect (which is supposed to be), and I could load my DLL.
So, for me, it looks like Delaylod won't work for DLL itslef. Thinking about a background of this mechanism, I can't understand why it didn't work.
Can anyone help me out? (Please forget about installing some optional kit on Windows 95, since my target is Japanese version and no one is available for that.)
I love Code Project, do you?

Hello, the codegurus around the world.;)
Actually, I can't understand your question very well.
However, if you try to use DelayLoadProfile.exe from Matt in MSJ,
DelayLoadProfile can't hook DLL calling from LoadLibrary as
some ppls pointed out DLL site of this CodeProject.
DelayLoadProfile only works for import table defined *.def to DLL.
But, we can hook LoadLibrary and GetProcAddress from kernel32.dll by DelayLoadProfile.exe.
Have a nice day!

Masaaki,
I'm not interested in Delayloadprofile.exe at all.
My question is, can DLL load another DLL when needed by using /delayload linker option as we do with EXE.
Getting idea?

I'm quite sure any function belongs to oleacc was not called in DllMain().
Maybe there are some global objects with c'tors calling oleacc functions? What's the error code after LoadLibrary?
