If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?

It is a lousy question but not our place to judge why someone wants the code. For example, some people seem to freak out when someone asks how to create a virus. Personally, I'd love to learn that to see how are these apps getting around system securities because it will help me become a better programmer; just like many years ago I learned how Sql injections actually work.

Don't ban someone just because they ask a "controversial" question. D'Oh! | :doh:

I'm not so sure.
If we get a reputation for "helping virus writers" and such forms of pond scum, then we start to risk going on corporate blacklists - which means we can't help the kind of people who want to get rid of viruses rather than write them.

The likelihood of that is so miniscule that it would never happen. We rarely get those types of questions and even if we helped point someone in the right direction, you know that no one is going to write all of the code so there's no way we'd ever get that reputation. Instead, we have the reputation of telling people to shut-up and go away. Sniff | :^)

You are absolutely right especially with the example you gave. There is no way to correctly protect against sql injection if you don't know inside out how it works.

However in this specific case I think it is a bit different. Credit cards are already made to provide fast and reliable way of accessing information on it, sometimes in 3 different ways on the same card.

If someone need a "creative" way to extract data on card while bypassing all the other methods it is clear sign they do something dodgy. Like placing hidden camera over ATM. Not to mention that the font on my card already looks "ocr friendly" to me so it can indicate low quality image or very colorful card...

Unless he can provide credible use case, I would invoke the power of ban-hammer....

Again, I disagree. I could easily see stores implementing a POS that just allows you to put your card in front of a scanner instead of swiping it.

No matter the use case, there will always be someone who can try and hack it. I say we don't be so quick to judge people.

Also, because most of the people that ask these questions are not likely intelligent enough to pull off a scam anyway. $Shucks | :-\$

All you really need to know is that you should always use parameterized queries, and never use string concatenation, even from within SQL itself. You can do that without having an in-depth knowledge of how SQLi works. Smile | :)

I think the main difference is that telling someone about SQLi is like telling them to lock their front door, whereas telling them how to steal credit-card numbers via a webcam is like telling them how to pick a lock. Picking locks is a useful skill for locksmiths, but the majority of people don't need to know how to do it.
