Hello All,
I have started preparation for the MCAD Certification.
Are there benefits for this cert? or does one get by with loads of experince and expertise. I have experience with Classic ASP and also ASP.NET (C# Flavor).
My methods of prep are:
SQL DESIGN Transcneder
C# WEB APPS Transcender
XML APP Transcender
I guess my questions is, are there any others that have had any experiences good or not so good?
Thanks
Tony

I've heard good things about the transcenders but I've never used one other than a demo. They give you a good idea about what to expect.
I passed all the exams as part of normal study plus experience. Just go over all the requirements to make sure you haven't left anything out.

You can always brush up and study the books and use Transcendar but for 70-100 or 70-300 I found experience was the key.

70-300 was tough for me. I had never failed a Microsoft exam but I failed the first time I took it. Some of the questions were very tricky or at least I thought so. I didn't have any problems the 2nd time though. I had different case studys and they were easier. I thought 70-100 was the toughest test I took for the old MCSD too.

Is there a passing scores for MCAD exams? Thanks!

This may seem a really stupid question, but as I dont know the answer, I have to find ask it. From all the exam centres I have seen, they make out as if you have to study the whole thing with them to be able to study the exam. also, which cert is better, MCSD or MCAD? How long would it take to complete this? And, if anyone is in the UK, do you know of testing centres where you can just pay to write the exam?
|
|
|

You have to be MCAD before you can be MCSD.NET. The requirements for MCAD are the same for MCSD.NET with the addition of 2 more tests for MCSD.NET. Most people I know attempt MCAD(3 tests) then finish up the last 2 tests for MCSD (5 tests). Got to Prometric [Prometric] or http://www.vue.com/[Vue] to find a testing center near you. Taking a class is not a prerequisite for taking a test.
You can still attempt the Visual Studio 6 MCSD too. It is only 4 tests but with .NET fewer and fewer people seem to be interested.
I'm not sure if anything I've said helps. Let me know if you have more questions.

Beyond that I can't remember much. It's been a while since I took 320. I had the most trouble with 320 and 300. Good luck and sorry I wasn't able to help more.

I finally finished up my MCSD.NET this week. The last exam I had was the 70-300 Architecture exam. It was pretty hard and very tricky. I've been a little surprised at how much the .NET developer exams on my resume has helped. It at least gets people to talk to me which is one of the hardest things to do these days. Most everyone doing C# in my area happens to be consulting firms so I guess it helps when they talk to a client to say they have x number of MCSDs on staff. It's not going to take the place of work experience but it's not a complete waste I hope.

Congratulations.
BTW how do you prepared for the exams ?

Thanks.
I prepared with books and MSDN. Basically I print the page of "Skills being Measured" that Microsoft has for each exam then research each topic via book/web/MSDN. Here's a link to a website where a guy does basically the same thing. I really didn't have much of a problem with any test except for 70-300. It was hard and very tricky. I bought the MS Press study guide for it hoping that it would help and I guess it did but not enough. I failed 70-300 the first time I took it but was able to pass the second time. Hope this helps.

There is a new one about 70-300 , it looks decent but I'll wait for the reviews ...
I asked your method of study because I'm interested in renewing my certifications and since the company pays it
But first , this thursday Sun Certified Programmer exam ... it's part of the objectives that I have to achieve ...
Cheers,Joao Vaz

Good luck on it. I got my Sun Certified Programmer last year. I took the old 310-025 exam though. I assume you're taking the 310-035? I used a couple of books and Javaranch for that one. I just did squeak by it too. Not sure if I can be any help on it since I haven't used java since I took the exam.
Let me know how you do.

Yeah ! Sun dropped the passing score to 52% , but they increased in their opinion the difficulty of the questions , they dropped AWT from the exam and streams !!!!!
... JavaRanch is a cool place to study , I'm only studying for one book , I don't want read more about the *basic* java stuff ...
What I'm doing is a lot of free and online tests to prepare for it.
Cheers,Joao Vaz

That's the beauty of the online Java Cert community. Lots of free sample tests. Some even harder than the real thing.
I started studying for the Java Web Component(310-080) certification but I got burned out and never finished it up. I guess I might try to go back and start studying for it again. I'm not sure what I want to do next.

Yep, it's my next one
SCWCD Exam Study Kit [^] it's a great book, and the guys at amazon and at certification lists are saying it's the ONLY thing necessary to pass the exam

I bought it as soon as it came on based on the recommendation of some JavaRanchers. I have heard some good stuff about it both then and since. Just gotta find the time to read it.

It really comes down to which exam you're interested in. Here's some links.
Transcender - I've never used one other than the samples. I have a friend that swears by them. You should at least download the sample/trial version of the exam you're planning on taking just to get a feel for the questions. Very realistic from what I hear. Also isn't considered a "braindump" as it's not real questions just very similar ones.
cramsession.com has some study guides for different exams that are sorta useful as something to look over but I wouldn't rely on them.
This website is one I mentioned in an earlier post. He does something similar to what I like to do in that he takes the requiresments and researches each one to find the answer.
If you have questions about a specific exam let me know and I can see if I still have notes or links for it.
