I listen to pink noise[^] through headphones to drown out the chatter in my noisy work environment.

P!nk. Just P!nk and only P!nk. I know every song, so I don't listen to the words anymore. It's just background now. It's P!nk Noise.
There are two kinds of people. Those who need closure

In my case, when my co-workers get noisy,
about 1 hour of metal core puts me back in focus from distraction
Perhaps pink noise is similar, I should try it ...
But normally - no music

If everything is going smooth Rock, if not Blues.

And if things are progressing well, may I suggest Progressive Rock?

And if you find an alternative way to do something...Alternative Rock!

What if I like more than one music genre and listen to a variety of those while I'm coding? And there isn't one that I like best, because they are so different, that I don't want to compare apples to oranges?

I agree. I couldn't make a choice so I just chose what's playing now. Megadeth - Peace Sells

I had a bit of a bipolar day yesterday. Went from Leprous - Forced Entry to Enya - (forgot title) and then to Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase.
Today I started my day with Sepultura's Arise. So I voted other.

Did the survey-producer ever hear of "Blues" ? It's not that obscure a genera.
Truly a waste of a survey.
And oh, yes . . . you'd think a survey like this would include multi-select options?
No doubt about it: impeachment proceedings are in order.

They had heard of "Blues", that's why there's an "Other" selection.
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.

Leaving out blues - or dumping in with other? Considering how many of the options hardly even qualify as music?
It's liking talking about classical music and leaving out baroque. Or Mozart. Or Beethoven.
I presume you accidentally left off the 'joke' icon.

Presume away - since you are correct!
Blues are cool, but I assume the survey author just put down the ones they could think of at the time - obviously not a Blues fan!

when I do decide to listen to music when I code. I usually don't listen to music when I code.

I'm too lazy to make my own playlists.. soma.fm gives me all I need with main load on digitalis last months.. (support them!)
Edit:prefer instrumental to avoid distractions

I love Soma.FM! I use Radio Ripper[^] (pardon the shameless plug ) to listen to it.

I usually listen to Rap, when I wake up. I make a cup of tea for myself, listen to Eminem for 30 minutes to make sure system is up and running.
But I do listen to Pop, Jazz and any other kind of music. In many categories, I love Bollywood music. If you guys could get a chance to listen to Indian music or Pakistani music, please do listen. Folk songs are very interesting, Bhangra and so on.
But since we were given radios, so I would chose Rap only.

This is a good suggest! Because, I mostly listen to Rap (like 80% of my time) but I also listen to Jazz, Pop and other genres.
I think it's "Best Genre for CodeProject" survey.

I love my noise-cancelling headphones
Sometimes I put them on without any music and it's all I need.
Some other days/tasks I need to shake things a bit so I go to some more aggressive stuff.
Pure Pop and Rock are usually only used to create a low volume background environment (with the headphones).
I've also read somewhere that music and coding stimulate the same part of the brain, which causes concurrent access. As our brain is not shaped to do multiple things at a time, this can be a problem.
I honestly feel it especially when I like the music... it easily gets me distracted from the task.

One day I listen to electronic (dance, trap, chill out, trap, trip hop, drum 'n' bass, trance, dubstep...), the other to metal (black, death, doom, heavy, thrash, goth, stoner), yet another to classical (medieval, baroque, classical, romantic, modern) or pop (just about anything) and probably I listen to all of them on a single day...
I also listen to music almost the entire day (dancing and cooking at the same time isn't recommended).
Whatever fits my mood! And this survey doesn't even begin to describe my moods
Voted "other".
