Error codes are one of the places where abstractions are leakiest, because errors merely propagate out from their point of origin, and the context in which the error is generated may not be anything the application developer is aware of. But it's the error you deserve

Is software engineering “really” engineering? Does it really matter?
It isn't. And it doesn't matter.
Well, game developers use game "engines". Like Halo Infinite, they use the "Slipspace Game Engine". Am I right?
is it soft for that matter?!
It certainly is malleable compared to what civil, mechanical, or electrical engineers build.
Nay.
We are but men.
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

People in the programming language design community strive to make their languages more expressive, with a strong type system, mainly to increase ergonomics by avoiding code duplication in final software; however, the more expressive their languages become, the more abruptly duplication penetrates the language itself. "If someone claims to have the perfect programming language, he is either a fool or a salesman or both."
Oooo, boy...

Is that article what happens when you decide to solve problems that no one is asking to solutions for? Or am I really that out of the loop as far as what 'real programming' entails?

What's remarkable is that it's by a 17-year-old. One who recently discovered his private parts, it would seem.

I guess I have to hand it to him. At 17, with the Basic language of that day, I wasn't thinking nearly the level of thoughts he is. I suppose that is a testimony to how far we've come since then. The hot thing back then, as I recall, was using obscure PEEKs and POKEs to make magic happen at a whole whopping 8 bits, 32 MBPS! After that came segmented architecture. UUUGHHHH! Kinda the same feeling I got skimming that article.

The web has veered away from its original purpose, suggests Sir Tim Berners-Lee Oh, I think we're just getting started

Ok, I almost started laughing as I read this:
First section: Everyone should be able to use it.
Second section: Some people shouldn't be able to use it. (referring to how people are using it)
Make up your mind Mr. Berners-Lee.

Hackers who made off with roughly $15 million in ethereum from Crypto.com are attempting to launder the funds through a so-called ethereum “mixer,” known as Tornado Cash, according to a new report from crypto security company Peck Shield. It's good that they're cleaning it. Money can be so dirty.

Why don't they just get it from the bank? I mean, money is money, right?

Like unit testing, modern integration testing offers a way of testing complicated software interactions. Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to reinvent testing methodologies

Quote: Like unit testing, modern integration testing... FFS. They're about as alike as chalk and cheese, and the first one can't hold a candle to the second.

Good to know even the king of software makes these kinds of mistakes. Now I don't feel so alone.

Most people don’t realize it, but many of the devices and apps you use every day are built on top of open source software, maintained by one or two developers that aren’t paid for their time, who patch bugs and improve their code to give back to the community or as a passion project. Are they transforming into He-man?
