I am trying to do the following ! ( SQL Server 2000 )
Open one session of Query Analyser Window
Begin Trans
Update Table1 Set ...
But I don't commit !
Open another session of Query Analyser Window
Select from Table1
Select gets Blocked unless Update is committed !
CAN'T I DO A SELECT WHEN UPDATES/INSERTS Occur ?
I Can do with NOLOCK but we don't want uncommitted data to appear !
I have tried with all transaction isolation levels.
Anyone can help ?

Hi all,
I am designing a project which can be separated into two layers.
1. The user interface
2. the business logic.
The business logic has to be developed as COM components (since it will need to be reused in other environments)
The question is in which language (environment) to write the users interface. Should I do it in Visual Basic or Visual C++ (or other)?

Depends 
With VB you will finish your job somewhat faster, but if you want to deploy your applications to many customers, it can be hell. You can NEVER be sure that a VB application will install successfully. However, if you have a limited number of customers, it will not be a big problem.

I have made many installbles in VB using the Deployment Wizard and i guess that the VB installable always works fine...I mean why will it not work when it is having all the dependent Dlls...?

VB is the best choice if you do not intend to distribute your any of the component to client's machine.
Apart from that VB application has Lots of dependency file which when installed may or may not creat a conflict problem . that totally depends how compatible(I mean version of the dependent files which you ignored while installing your VB application)) is your development machine and the staging machine.
Generally the size of a VB app will be approx more than twice the size of VC++ app.

I'm looking for a way to check application existance in two capacities:
1.) How do I check if an application is running? One program relies on another to process, etc...
2.) How do I check if the application being launched is already running? Or, is this handled the same way?

Hi all
We have some third party VBX controls ( without source code ofcourse !!! ) which we would like to use with OCX and Dlls.
Is this still possible ?
Currently we have two setups running in parallel for 16 and 32 bit and we want to avoid this.
Can we write a wrapper or a bridge to make calls atleast ?
Any pointers will be appreciated

I need to know sourcecode about getting "serial number" of harddisk. Please help me.
Note:
1. "serial number" NOT "Volumn Serial Number".
2. each harddisk has id called serial number.
3. Volumn Serial Number is generated by "format" command.

for getting the serial number use api GETVOLUMEINFORMATION
u'll get the file system name(FAT,FAT32,NTFS,CDFS etc..) and the Disk Serial Number

I've been trying to use a property bag to move parameters from a method call in one object to a method in another object. It seemed like a good idea at the time, however I keep getting an error regarding the incorrect use of references to private objects in method calls and the like. The property bag is declared public in the declarations section of the form from which it originates, and I've tried passing both ByRef and ByVal with no success. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I installed .Net,and I found the component writed with VB was correct while debug step by step,then I make the dll.But it does not work correct.(In one method of this component ,I called one function of another dll just for unzip files.)
If this is caused by .net?

I have seen different versions of browsers coded in VB, nevertheless even those called COMPLETE or FULL VB Browser won't be able to edit an Office document when open locally.
Some of them would have the ability to open any type of document locally and even display it on the browser but none would display the necessary editing toolbars as Internet Explorer does when opening any Office type document(an icon called Tools can be clicked and the necessary toolbar would appear).
HOW CAN THIS BE DONE?
