I'm shocked, desperate, almost crying. I thought i knew at least some basics about partitions, boot sectors and all that but yesterday proved me awfully wrong. I started partitionmagic under XP and it gave me two errors about some sectors being bad so it asked me to fix them so obviously i clicked yes sure go ahead and fix it. Bang, the trouble starts, partitionmagic doesnt get past the splash screen so i do end task. Somehow i get a funny feeling, pessimistic as i may be and i restart my comp to see if everythings still ok, i get into my boot loader and choose XP but XP hangs during loading :/ So i press reset and try loading linux, PHEW thank god, it starts loading BUT CRAP it hangs too, something about Kernel Panic, try using the Init option or something, but i dont know linux so no dice (besides thats not where the problem is). So what now? I try botting from floppy disks: partitionmagic, killdisk, a normal dos boot floppy, THEY ALL HANG and dont do anything like when i try to boot windows. MMMM what now.. ok the hard way, i open up my comp and take out my harddisk and put it in my dad's comp as secondary HD so that i might access it under XP. But nope, it hangs when trying to load the bootloader!! and i mean the bootloader that was on my dads HD. Simply nothing works. I have a suspicion this was caused because of SoftIce being installed since it normally says something about loading a video driver when loading XP and it doesnt say that anymore and then it just hangs. Of course it could also be hanging before it loads the video driver.. i don't know that. But when the XP load screen displays it just keeps on loading and loading. It doesnt ACTUALLY hang, its just like it gets stuck in some sort of loop. I've never seen anything like this and dont know what to do, i cant even erase my HD since i cant boot from a floppy... I'm have absolutely no idea what to do. And the worst part is there is a partition on my drive which i really want to recover because it contains all my projects etc. Yes i know i shouldve made a backup but thats not the point, i cant even FORMAT my HD so what now...

This sounds like a problem that I had a few months ago. However, I was able to reinstall XP (no formatting) through a bootable CD. Why you cannot boot from a floppy disk, is beyond my comprehension. It might be that your floppy disk is ruined.

Thanks for replying. My floppy isnt ruined though. The programs themself run fine, but its just that they hang when they try to do "something" to the harddisk, even though i didnt think a normal DOS bootable tried to access the harddisk..which is weird. But yea, the CD rom crossed my mind and i tried but... now my powersupply is screwed over too, so no more computer for me for a while, and byebye 3 years worth of programming.. doh... this sucks. But oh well, i got over it already, comps aren't everything, i guess i'll just.. read a book *grin*
Oh god i'm so devastated.. lol

Not necessarily. There are computer repair places where they can retrieve the information in your hardrive, in some cases even when they are burned. I don’t know how they do it though. They have special equipment.

Winternals ERD commander is a good program it lets you create a CD Bootable operating system and gives you network access as well. You can create the boot cd on your dads computor it will then work in any computor. This program is not cheep. If you can get your system to boot to this cd you should then have access to your files. Good Luck

Hi all,
Wanted to know if it is possible to both pad a hex numbers with leading 0's and also format the width of the message.
I have a string and i just concat a hex number to it. I just want to space out the numbers so that they will line up with the next string added, so that it has the look of a table.
Right now i am padding the hex number like this:
testStr.Format("%03X" , myString);
Str += testStr;
testStr.Format("%03X" , myString2);
Str += testStr;
Listbox.AddString(Str);
I know if i take away the 0, then it will set the width, but i need to do both. CAN THIS BE DONE?
thanks in advance.
Jimmy

In Visual C++
=============
From the "help" menu select
Index...
From the "Type in keyword to find" edit box enter
Rtf Files /* Don't forget the space between rtf and files */
The first result is "and context-sensitive Help".
Double click on it and you will find examples with explanations.
It even has screen shot of MS Word.
I could not find this on msdn.mircosoft.com so you will need your orignal cds if you did not install all the help files.

There is a class library for Win32 that you can use with your MFC apps:
Thesycon USB-IO Class Library[^]
It has a full-featured but time limited free download and a light version with no time limit also free. It might help you.

Hi,
I want to know how to programmically incorporate the XP style windows (frame, buttons, etc.) to a project in Visual C++ .NET 2003.
Beginning with Visual C++ .NET 2003, Microsoft has changed the window it incorporate window styles to a project. In older versions, an application gets the XP style under XP automatically. That is no longer true in version .NET 2003.
I have read the solution at MSDN include the one with using TheApp.exe.manifest. However, the solution requires that the program must have the manifest file in the same directory as the EXE, even in final release.
I want like to know if there is a solution to programmically incorporate the XP style windows to a project without needing the manifest file "visible" to end-users.
Thanks,
Kuphryn

Hi
How can I integrate my own help topics into MSDN Library (I mean into Document Explorer)
Best regards,

I used to be able to do this with MSVC v1.52, but don't know if it's still possible with the 32-bit compiler.

Hi folks,
I need to be notified when a CDialog-derived class receive a WM_KEYDOWN message. This dialog is the main window of a secondary thread (not the main application one). I can see w/ the debug trace that the message is posted by my OnKeyDown oveloaded function is never called. Any idea about this? Thanx a lot in advance.
Best Regards;)

Interesting.
Overload PreTranslateMessage(). Does it process WM_KEYDOWN?

I noticed PreTranslateMessage works properly but the message is lost somewhere in between the MFC call stack. I am confident this could be due the fact there is a OCX control on the dialog that probably process the WM_.
How can I be notified of the message instead of the control(s)?
Best Regars,
andrea
