If you really want to learn programming.. you need to learn a real fully object oriented language like C++...
VB6 is great but it teachs bad programming habits..
understanding C++ and object oriented programming well will help you learning C# , VB.NET later.

Lewis:
I too would not recommend VB. It doesn't do OOP well and you will want to switch to something else.
If you are having a challenge with C then C++ is not going to be easier. I suggest starting with Borland Turbo Pascal (or at least some version of pascal) which is what most CompSci majors start with and have for over 20 years t most universities. It seems to be a good language to learn on. I myself started with Fortran but that was a long time ago...
Turbo Pascal can be written OO or not so after you learn the basics of programming you can move on to OOP.
C is also great but personally I would recommend learning C and C++ as a second/third language. I'm sure there are some who can dive right in and will disagree with me but for most beginners Pascal has earned the mantle of being the language of educators.
Good luck.

I would recommend learning C first, and then C++. Its a very logical manner to learn the two probably most important languages you could learn. They are both fairly complex, but if you know them well, development for Windows and *nix systems gets infinitely easier. VB isn't even really a OO language, it just is a bastardization of OO, its primary goal being to "protect" you from yourself. VB is ok for very small, quick programs, but programming a large project in VB is almost unmanageable.

I use outlook send Email, how to know the Email Send success or fail?
|
|
|
|
|
You can check to see if the mail was successfully posted to YOUR mail server, but you can't determine if the send to the recipient was actually successfull. This would require you to monitor your mailbox for any messages that came back from the destination server saying that the delivery was unsuccessfull. This is also complicated by the fact that not every mail server will send a reply at all, and not every mail server will send the same format for a delivery failure message.

You shouldn't user WinSock, instead use System.Net.Sockets... If you are not familiar with these, there are a lot of articles on that namespace here

Hey,
This is my first post here so lemmy start with thanks to all the contributors here. I have learned allot from the code hosted here.
My problem is with system.web.mail.
When I try to import system.web.mail with (Imports System.Web.Mail) I get squiglys telling me that "namespace or type (mail) for imports system.web.mail cannot be found.
I have searched both here and on msdn and found examples useing..
Imports System
Imports System.Web.Mail
and have try to copy/paiste them into visual studio as both windows application and console application and always get the error.
Is it that my library is incomplete or has this namespace been replaced by something else or what?
Thanks in advance for you're help
EDIT: If it helps anyone to see what I meen here is a link to the namespace info on msdn.
Also I should have mentioned that I tried calling smtpMail.send useing the full path (System.Web.Mail.smtpMail.send() ) and it still sais it doesn't exist.

Add a reference to System.Web in your project
Charlie

I can import system.web and can also reference it from inside other classes etc. the squigly lines show up when I add .mail or when I try to use anything or these dudes (MailAttachment MailFormat MailPriority
MailEncoding MailMessage SmtpMail )
I admit I am a vb.net newb but I have checked and rechecked my syntax and spelling etc even going as far as to copy and paste example code from msdn and even downloaded some project files useing the class and always get the squiggly lines and compile time errors.
Its like it isn't there. Is there a way to download the full library? I'm guessing my library is incomplete or corrupted. I just installed a fresh visual studio .net enterprise archetect from an unopened retail box. (still in the plastic)
For example I can start a new visual basic - console application and paiste the code directly from this msdn page and get the same problem.
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/cpref/html/frlrfsystemwebmailsmtpmailclasstopic.asp

The Imports keyword is only a coding shortcut. For example, adding Imports System.Windows.Forms at the top of your source code file allows you to type Dim myForm as New Form instead of Dim myForm as new System.Windows.Forms.Form
If you want to use a class in an assembly that's not referenced by default, you have to add that reference manually. To do so, right click on the References folder in your project (in the Solution Explorer) and click Add Reference. Scroll down until you find the one you're looking for (System.Web in this case), double-click it and click OK. Now you can use any of the classes defined in that assembly in your code.

Thank you very much.
I actualy found my solution yesterday BUT that is exactly what I wasn't doing and you are the only person who responded and tried to help so I DO apriciate the help.
This was my first application and as part of my course I was to write something that I felt was usefull while small and make myself find everything I needed to know to get it done. Not the usualy first exercise in a course but very usefull. I lurned allot of the basics and this way they will stick, since I spent so much time finding each.
Again Thanks,
Harley

Hi,
I'm trying to get notified by application when the folder is added with new file.
The problem is when the file being added to folder is very big....94 MB. And it takes > 15 minutes to complete the file transfer/copy. And I want only be notified by the application when the file transfer is completed.
Currently I'm just able to get notified whenever the file is added to the folder, even if the file transfer/copy process still not completed
Is there any tips to overcome this problem?
Thank you very much for the help and tips.
regards.

i'm using the cTextBoxBackground class from vbAccelerator
http://www.vbaccelerator.com/home/VB/Code/Libraries/Subclassing/Tile_a_Bitmap_Into_a_TextBox/article.asp
and trying to adapt it to change the background of a form (which i don't own), and it almost works.
If you remove the lines which refer to the hWnd of the parent window and use the class "as is" to subclass a form it works except the labels are not drawn onto the DC, nor are shapes and lines etc.
these controls don't seems to get painted onto the DC when you send the WM_PRINT message.
does anyone know of a way around this.
Thank you
mdb
