On a related note, is it possible to edit a message on the forum?
This morning (well, it was AM for me!) I unintentionally hit submit (not looking what I'm doing). I'd have liked to be able to edit that submission, but I'm not sure how, so I posted a correction underneath.

Bizzarely, I was about to delete my posting. I felt so stupid having finally noticed the [modify][delete] links, after GOK how long using CP.
In defence, your honour, I'd like to submit exhibit 'A', being a pair of old, no longer accurate prescription spectacles. I sit under an air vent, which makes my contacts uncomfortable for long periods....
Thanks anyway, though. My advanced age means I'll probably forget in a couple of days...

Hey Everyone!
Read my bio and you'll know why I am asking such a basic and/or stupid question. My "future" employer has a card reader that runs on WinXP. They want someone who, at least, has a basic knowledge of code. In order to find out what they are using to write the application I have to ask the VP of Tech. Now, I can't come off as a total idiot. So how could I best approach this? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, the job is in Saudi Arabia. That's a far piece for a southern boy! I only need the basics and have 60 days to study up. I can do that. But I need help on not coming off as a fool and getting my name tossed out of the running. My primary expertise is sales. So, I can talk my way through most things but this. I have hardware and software operating experience but have only dabbled in code.
HELP!!

Okay. Let's see... What sort of card reader? To read what sort of cards? Credit Cards? Identity Cards? Punch  Cards?
Regardless, I would guess that the hardware element is most likely written in C (and/or C++) and assembler.
Windows XP is mostly written in C, C++ and assembler.
What exactly is the job? You never mentioned that. Just that coding will play a part (and by the sounds of it a small part) so I can't imaging that they'd throw you in with device driver coding as that is highly specialised.
Do you know what sort of coding/development they'll want you to do?
Anyway - if you have more information and feel it is kind of sensitive then I'm prepared to accept a private email on this one.

A lot of hardware device programming is done in C, or some variant thereof. A lot depends upon what level of programming is going to be required of you. Are you expected to modify the behavior of the card reader, or are you supposed to just interface with the device using a WinXP system? If the latter, C++ or even VB skills may be adequate to deal with the challenge. If the former, you need to sound as if you're an expert in real-time, embedded programming in C-like languages. From your description I'm betting that all you need to know is how to talk to the device and retrieve responses from it. For that purpose any modern language should be acceptable. Ask them what language they prefer, and bone up on it.
I've felt much better since I gave up hope.

You could, but the information brought up by google can be all over the place - and more-often-than-not is Unix/Linux based rather than Windows based.
As this site is a Microsoft oriented site it is natural that the original poster is looking for microsoft technology oriented answers. The book I suggested is an excellent introduction and reference for Socket programming in Windows using the .NET Framework.
Finally, a good developer should be able to research all avenues available. Google is not the be-all-and-end-all of information lookup. Learning to read a book is infinitely more advantageous than just typing words in to Google and seeing what pops up first.
Also, books can be read off-line, which, especially when doing network programming, is a great benefit. I've done some network programming in the past and it has been fantastic to have a book the guide me when I've messed up the network connection at information is no longer flowing.

I've got shelves full of them, and I never suffer from 404 errors.
It does have it's downside, which is finding the stuff you're looking for, but that just encourages me to read them, which might explain why I sometimes seem to be better at my job and brighter than some of my colleagues

Hi,
This one has me stumped..
What is the best way of keeping track of how many times an application has been run?
Meaning: if i need to limit an app to thirty uses before disabling , then what is the best way of going about that?

one thing you can do is create a registry key somewhere in a odd location and increment it everytime the program is run, now you have the idea.

I wrote a small piece of code that used a cryptostream in combination with a filestream to encrypt/decrypt file data on the fly.
You could use this to store your counter in a heavely encrypted file

How do you detect that your network interface card is 'healthy'?
Especially if you have two of them attached to the same computer and one is however designated as the 'primary' and the second one is the 'backup'?
You can readily tell your primary is fine, because you can read its status or the TCP/IP is going through it, but how do you detect that the secondary is still 'okay'? Do you force TCP/IP loopback through the secondary somehow?

I have the beginings of an article put together, but would prefer to work with an editor here at CP before posting it.  The article is about developing a C# class that does database access and is implemented as a web service. I also have a windows form client application that consumes the web service. If one of the editors could work with me to review the article before posting, I would be really grateful. Thanks very much.
