Hi All!
Can anybody tell me if VB.NET applications can be compiled to use with Linux?
If so, how and are there any negative aspects?
Thanks
Brad

Thanks. Mono sounds interesting...something to learn about this weekend, if it rains again.
I was kind of hoping that there was a way to do this from within VB.NET.
I’m currently trying to write a program in C++ (so I can compile Linux) and I’m using QT Designer to help with the GUI’s. Problem is that I know very little about C++. I know a bit more about VB.NET so I wanted to try and stay within my comfort zone.

The problem your facing is that there is no offical .NET Framework for Unix/Linux. Mono is that project. Once you have a working Framework, you can use VB.NET on it.

While I have no personal interest in coding for linux, it is certainly picking up steam. I have heard of mono being widely talked about at MS developer conferences. Almost as if it is gaining corporate acceptance. Only time will tell.

Oh, I see...
So, will I be able to use Mono to open an existing VB.NET project and then compile it for Linux?

Don't know. Never tried it. You'll have to depend ENTIRELY on the developers of Mono for support and what the procedures and pitfalls are.

Mono is a framework, like .NET is a framework. There is a VB.NET compiler for mono, but it is not as advanced as the C# compiler. However, it is under active development.
Mono is not 100% compatible with .NET, especially when it comes to WinForms. My impression is that you will never be able to take a Windows Winform app and have it compile directly under Mono. You can compile a GTK Forms app (approx Mono equivalent to WinForms) in Mono, and have it run on Windows, using Mono.
Part of the WinForms problem is that in Linux, forms have some significant differences to forms in Windows, most notably that they do not use absolute positioning. There are other factors as well, some of them legal (licensing and patent issues etc).
Mono 1.0 beta 2 is out at the moment, and it does not have official support for windows forms. They have concentrated on other aspects of the framework for this version. ASP.NET works, as do other console, or non-visual DLLs. The Mono framework also has additions that .NET does not have, such as native support for several more databases.

Can any body give me some sample code for where database source table and dataset table is mapped using table mapping and column mapping, where source column name is diffrenet from datatable column name.
Thank you.

I have a first Dataset with a single table
Its contains columns in the table in it are
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
vBookShrtName | VocNo | mAmount | iBookNo |
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I will get the same values from second Dataset
----------------------------------------------------------------
BookName | VocNo | Amount | iBookNo |
----------------------------------------------------------------
i would like to generate the third dataset like
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
vBookShrtName | VocNo | mAmount | iBookNo |BookName | Amount

Please help me

It's very rude to post the same question 4 times! Don't!
Try here[^] for a start on DataSet.Merge.

hiii
i made a dll to check on hdd serial number on application start, but if earase this dll the program just give an error but i can press continue so it will work normaly, i use try-catch when i define an object of that reference, but it always give me unhadled exception
i want to this in case the user erease that file i don't want the program to run

Are you getting this Continue because your running a debug version of your code in the debugger? Try running a Release compiled version outside the development environment. Also, are you trying to handle specific exceptions in your try/catch block? Just use a catch block like this:
Try
...some code that might fail...
Catch ex As Exception
...exception handling code...
Finally
...If you need to run code that must run in all cases...
End Try

not working....i think when i try to call a reference not exist it not look to the try catch...
Try
Dim any_name As New reference1.class1
Catch ex As Exception
MessageBox.Show("error")
End Try
when the reference1 is not aviliable it gives me the default error, not my custom error on the catch
|
|
|
|
|
I don't think your going to be able to do what you want. When the reference is being bound to the .DLL, the file is missing? This would be a catastrophics failure (I think!)you can not catch.
I take it this is part of a copy protection scheme?

i think i found some solution, if i made my call into a sub, then i call that sub between try and catch
|
|
|

Apparently, I had my head somewhere it should not have been.
I think you looking at this:
Dim myFunction As myNamespace.myClass
Try
myFunction(myParameters)
Catch
' Call failed code goes here...
End Try

Hi,
1. How can I sort a DataTable?
2. After sorting the dataTable, How can I bind this to
an object like ComboBox?
Thanks
Mark
|
|
|
|
|
You don't sort the DataTable object, you sort on a View of the table, then bind your control to the DataView, not the table. Check out the docs here[^].
One method of doing this:
Dim myDataView As DataView = myDataset.Tables("Customers").DefaultView
myDataView.Sort = "LastName, FirstName"
myControl.DataSource = myDataView

HI
I Have created a gui for netsend but would like to know how to add an
active directory listing instead of typing the pc or ip address
in the tree listing
thanking you in advance
|
|
|
|
|
You would have to search for a list of machine or user names using the System.DirectoryServices namespace. You'll be using teh DirectorySearcher and DirectoryEntry to return a list of entires and the details on each entry.
For the docs, start here on MSDN[^].
